I love that he was so playful right from the beginning. Always remained humble and self deprecating despite being so popular and famous. I despair at the overhyped so-called celebrities these days thinking they're so great - can't hold a candle to Elvis ❤

Love your Elvis reactions! He is clearly clowning his way through this song in the 1970 rehearsal. One quality that never changed over the years was Elvis's penchant for playfulness, whether he glance or gesture to purposefully get the crowd going as he does in the 1956 clip or some colorful lyric substitutions as he provides in the 1970 clip.

Elvis was so beautiful when he was young and as you said he had a certain vulnerability and boyish charm, just discovering his power over his fans. Forward to 1970, we had the accomplished performer who had total mastery over his voice which had matured and grew richer and deeper. Being on stage was second nature to him, he was so comfortable, in total control and so sexy. We had a young man and then the man.

Elvis Presley has been described variously as a baritone and a tenor. An extraordinary compass- the so-called register, and a very wide range of vocal color have something to do with this divergence of opinion.

“He knows “ lol😂 It’s one of my 17 favorite songs by him. First version is toying and seductive. Second version is playing around. You should check out the 68 comeback version. His voice just got better as he got older. I loved his voice in the 70s.

A few thoughts: As you said, Elvis' voice was deeper, richer and Elvis was fully in control of the audience, unlike Sullivan, where he wasn't quite sure what was going on. Elvis' fans had a deep genuine affection for the man unlike any other performer I have seen. There is something very special about both the 50s Elvis and the early 70s Elvis. Two different men, two different performers but both unmatched. Question: on the Sullivan performances, Elvis often put his hands to his ears, does anyone know why? Was this a signal to his parents? Was he trying to hear? Great review.

I don't know the reason he did the hand-to-ears thing, but i'm guessing it was a sound thing; i can tell you that when you do that, the sound is completely different; when you listen to the TV or the radio, or when someone talks to you, cup your hands behind your ear & push your ear gently forward a little bit & hear how different it sounds -- it's like going from mono to stereo -- you can hear sounds that you don't normally hear. What you said about "two different men" is why i love comparisons & suggest them because it's very interesting to see how he changed & evolved, i.e., "Jailhouse Rock" from '57 choreographed rehearsed film version, to Elvis 11 yrs. later when he let loose on his '68 special, stand-up segment - amazing difference; also at Hampton Roads in '72.

I was about to send you this rehearsal to performance version; i can't imagine how the woman got up onto the stage -- it's a great video, one we never see, no one ever suggests it . He purposely leaned backwards on the chair -- he also did this when he was playing the piano at one of his rehearsals & he purposely leaned over & fell off the piano bench. I don't know which Sullivan appearance this was but i read some interesting info w-regards to his Sept. 9, 1956 "appearance" which i found on a few websites -- For Elvis' appearance on Ed Sullivan on September 9, 1956, Sullivan was not physically on his stage in New York & Elvis was not physically in New York for his performance. Sullivan was in the hospital due to a serious car accident, & Elvis was in Los Angeles for the filming of "Love Me Tender." Actor Charles Laughton hosted for Sullivan, & for Elvis' performance, they beamed him from Studio 33 in Hollywood to Studio 50 in New York, which goes to show you can't always believe everything you see or read about Elvis. Thx so much.
