I was fortunate enough to see it fly when it based from our station for the Chicago Air and Water show in the late 70's, so we got to see a couple take-offs, and it is a sound that I will never forget. The Vulcan wasn't just an airplane, it was a living, breathing beast, an aluminum dinosaur.

This is the aircraft responsible for my lifelong passion for flight. My dad took me to an airshow as a kid and the aircraft buzzing about were boring to me. Then there was an earth-shattering roar that I could feel right in the very depths of my bowels. It was the most incredible sound and feeling I’d ever experienced. To this day, I find the Vulcan’s sound absolutely spine-tingling and get a rush of excitement when I hear that howl followed by the huge roar as she passes.

A (sadly late) sailing buddy flew these for the RAF in the late 60s. After a stint in the USA, the squadron flew home, but he only made it a few hundred miles before he had a mechanical failure and landed at a USAF B-52 base. RAF ground crew came out and fixed it over 3 days, and he and crew were well entertained. When he finally left for a short hop with a light fuel load to final staging for the UK he thought he'd give them a show. Cleared for takeoff, he launched it into an almost vertical climb halfway down the runway, and was reportedly at 10,000 feet over the perimeter. Astonished reaction from the USAF B-52 crews was "Damn! That's a bomber???"

The Vulcan at the last air show at Leuchars was special for me because it was the last one and also the last one I attended with my Grandfather. He was an RAF pilot that got his wings during the war but missed the fighting. He trained and got his wings in Canada and got back just as the war was ending. He didn't have to go to war. He was a manager of a Jute mill but he decided to fight anyway. My hero forever. Anyway that year the Vulcan flew at the end of the show and I happened to be in a portaloo at the time. The portaloo started shaking like there was an earthquake and I knew the Vulcan had risien. It was the best end to an Airshow I've ever experienced. The Noise alone is something I'll remember forever but also the grace by which it flew. It looked like it was born in the air and at speed. Graceful and Beautiful. Love Grandad, Luv and Peace All.

And being a kid in Doncaster in the 60s I would hear them do their 6pm engine turn on , and for 5 minutes there was an engine roar that reverberated all over the town. @robertp.wainman40943 жыл бұрын
I never knew about the the '6pm engine turn on' - how fantastic! When I was very young my grandparents ran the 'Eagle and Child' at Auckley - a favourite of RAF crews from Finningley - and I grew up listening to wonderful, (but at times very touching stories) of the pub and customers during wartime. When we moved away, visiting Finningley for the 'At Home' airshow every year was a must - especially, of course, for the truly amazing Vulcan displays - mighty Lightning too! I agree - it is heartwarming and a nice reminder to see the miniature Vulcan (actually a display of plants) near the racecourse.

samblin1 It's not that Rolls Royce won't repair her, Vulcan to the Sky (the charity who owns her and works with repair crews) can't afford to keep the two company's on who do the maintenance on the air frame. The engines work perfect and are checked by both BAE and Cessna who own the hangers next door the Vulcans at Robin Hood. Not only that but the air frame is way beyond its maximum hours for safe flight, anything longer could result in the plane being damaged beyond repair.
@eatthisvr69 жыл бұрын
***** are there any other vulcans with airframe life left?
@faranhanson86439 жыл бұрын
eatthisvr6 I don't think so, the one based in Doncaster is the only one with flight capability, there are two others in the UK which are safe to taxi but aren't certified to fly; which I think is because their air frame is too aged (don't quote me on that though). What I do know for certain though is that to get the current Vulcan to the state its in now took several years and hundreds of thousands of pounds, which I don't think would be available to make the other two safe to fly. All the other components however I believe are fine, BAE and Vulcan to the Sky have all the know-how to repair the engines and mechanical parts etc they just can't repair the air frame and the company who does that sort of stuff are asking for too much and VTTS just can't afford it.

I reckon that took a few years off the life of the pier and some of the pensioners watching. Honestly, it absolutely rocked that pier. People were smiling from ear to ear and hanging on to the handrails. I can still remember that feeling of being childishly scared and excited all at once, bit like a roller coaster ride. Seen her fly several times. Nothing at all came close to watching and hearing this beauty in the sky. Nothing ever will either.

Matt Luxton Apart from seeing the Vulcan at air shows I twice I saw operational squadron aircraft. Standing on Holyhead Mountain in fog one day in 1969 I heard a roar of Olympus engines and then one after the other three Vulcans in line astern appeared out of the fog and disappeared again as they headed for RAF Valley. A few years later, while camped in a field near Woburn I heard that take off howl in the far away distance and I saw a Vulcan reaching for the sky, possibly from RAF Scampton and followed that dot until it disappeared into the morning sky. A classic aircraft!
