I really like how viruses do so much to hide themselves. E.G only triggering on some dates, only triggering if there are particular phrases. It mimics how actual viruses can't be too brutal or they'll kill their host before they can spread.
@Shortninja668 жыл бұрын
yeah i really like how it makes itself spread before it unleashes destruction
@Brunosky_Inc8 жыл бұрын
I still really like those viruses that ignore any and all nonsense and go straight to the point, like Articbomb
@Shortninja668 жыл бұрын
Brunosky Inc. that's a bit harder to spread though
@trollbreeder25347 жыл бұрын
Brunosky, Articbomb is actually a trojan, because it doesn't replicate itself by itself (worms) or infecting a file (virus). Instead, trojans just execute their malicious code, and try to hide themselves as legitimate software.

something about worms like this is so fascinating to me. worms built off of pure anger or other emotion. these are the kinds of worms that actually scare me, even if I'd never be targeted by them. that's another interesting thing about this worm, it's so specific. it's like the author tried as hard as they could to keep anyone besides their specific target safe.
@Liam30728 жыл бұрын
In my teenage years I have been infected by the Magistr.B. Fortunately, it didn't succeed in overwriting my BIOS. It was slightly different than this version though. I don't think it required specific law-related documents, and instead of overwriting the MBR, it would delete all partitions but C:. You would make new ones, start putting stuff in it... only for it to delete the partitions again a few days later. Also, it wouldn't overwrite the executables rendering them useless, no... it would just infect them all. The worst thing about this is that your computer was still usable and you might be clueless about the virus, taking a while to realize the situation and what you needed to do (basically, format then reinstall everything).

This worm reminds me of Stuxnet. Like Magistr did for you, Stuxnet got me into studying malware and information security. The idea that worms and viruses are no longer just something a bored programmer would come up with for the fun of it, that it could be specifically directed at a target with motivation and intent. It's always incredible learning about what makes these things tick. It's like biology on a computing level - you get to see the evolution of malware. Some are natural and random, probing the limits of new systems and trying out new things, while others like this one are bred and built with purpose. Your videos never cease to amaze me, from the simple Suicide DOS virus (the first one I ever watched on your channel), to Maldal, Cascade and now this. I am so glad that I subscribed to you, and I'm so proud to be a counted as a part of your channel's growth. Congratulations, and here's looking forward to more videos in the future! :)

Why do viruses not overwrite the BIOS/CMOS in NT based systems like they did in 9x systems?
@danooct18 жыл бұрын
as i understand it, there were exploits in the 9x kernel that were used to elevate the virus's privileges to ring0 which allowed it to interact with the hardware. this was made much more difficult when running on windows NT.
@lordsyn868 жыл бұрын
is there malware that can actually get ring0 levels on NT?
@HandE2Go8 жыл бұрын
+lordsyn86 yep, look up what "rootkits" are
@lordsyn868 жыл бұрын
I know what a rootkit is, but rootkits infect the operating systems. I've never seen a rootkit infect actual hardware like the BIOS or CMOS memory on NT based systems before.
@HandE2Go8 жыл бұрын
Certain rootkits do infect the BIOS or MBR or the hard drive itself in such a way that it will load the malware first, then the malware will load Windows already infected. Look up Regin or Equation Drug...one of the modules infects the hard drive firmware so that any amount of formatting (quick, full, DoD, etc.) will do nothing to the malware. The BIOS, however, can be reflashed rather easily with tools today, but back during CIH's time, the motherboard manufacturers never took physical security into consideration.

Thank you for sharing this video with me. I had a computer that was infected with the Magistrate virus back in the day. I knew very little about computers having received my first PC in 1999 when I was almost 40 years old. I remember getting an email from someone I didn't know with the subject line "My plans for the Summer" although I didn't know the sender, the body of the email was written by my brother; odd. Needless to say, my computer began doing some odd things, although it never got to the point where the icons moved from the cursor. I had a local computer specialist repair it who told me it had been infected with the Magistrate worm. As upset as I was, I found it rather intriguing that someone could write a program that would spread through emails and delibetately damage other people's computers. I began reading about them on McAfee's website which provided information on viruses "in the wild" I was never attacked by another virus, I kept my antivirus software up to date which blocked several attempts including Klez, Yaha, and SirCam attempts. Fortunately today there are fewer of those types of attacks. I seldom use a PC for work or home anymore.

Y'know. Even though I was given an eMachine with Windows XP when I was 4, being the little shit I was and never was told about viruses or the things on the internet. I never got a single 'bad' virus. But I'm proud to see you at 100,000 subscribers, danooct1. It's amazing to see someone so unique to grow like this.
