Summary:
The BHR is one of the very best values in its class. You cannot go wrong with any option and they all perform great. That being said, the 3" BHR is much better than the 2" BHR but the 2" BHR with 2.5" arms and the Gemfan 2540 props is best. Unfortunately you will need to buy the 2.5" arms aftermarket and install them yourself. If you do not want to touch the quad, definitely get the 3" version. I highly recommend 4S ~550mah for the 3" and 3S ~550mah for the 2"-2.5".
Babyhawk R 3" - goo.gl/FiHuz5, goo.gl/PTmtak
Babyhawk R 2" - goo.gl/v5HNte, goo.gl/PTmtak
2.5" arms - goo.gl/rQknT3
a good 550mah 3S - goo.gl/wsFo58, goo.gl/zsTK88
Look for a ~500-650mah 4S for the 3". I don't have one off hand to recommend at the moment.

BuzzCola 3 I'm exactly the same way. I took apart my 1st bnf quad before I even tried it out. I decided I needed the parts for anothet build. I STILL liked the Babyhawk R though. It's literally the only bnf quad I own that I haven't completely dismantled for parts.The only thing I've done to it is adding the 2.5inch arms and the 2540 gemfans. It really is a great little machine!

Just bought this guy... And oh my lol, the attention to detail, the build quality and the fight performance are stelar, it flies and handles better than my 5" setups and I spent a lot of time on these. Just out of the box. I had my doubts since the micro quads are more expensive than a 5" build and for Rtf stuff I believe one always builds them to last opposed to something preassembled, but after 2 flights with the 3" Babyhawk R I'm blown away, I'll probably stick to this one, I see no other reason to keep flying the 5" as I don't use gopros. With this little beast, I can go anywhere, it barely makes half of the noise that my 5" do, it is super efficient, with 5:30 minutes of mild flight time but as powerful as you ask him to be, the flight experience is superb, it is rock solid... Very happy with the purchase.

I just got back from the park after flying my Babyhawk R3" first time out. It was great. I used a pair of Tattu 650mah 4S and a pair of Pulse 850mah 4S. I have a 3S 650mah Infinity on the way, but I wonder if I will like it now... On the bad side I had a time getting used to the camera angle. It seems high to me for starting out so I pushed it down 5 degrees. Also, all four motors were quite hot and I enjoyed the power so I didn't hold back. I didn't expect it to fly as well as it did. My DYS Elf is not in the same category and my Furibee VX140 is powerful, but it's weight makes it a tank and not as quick as the Babyhawk! Its the best little guy that I own right now and all my 5" are being repaired or rebuilt so it is a breath of fresh air!

hey, I recently received the pyrodrone 2.5 inch arm upgrade and installed them on my 2" babyhawk-r, I used the gemfan 2540 props on the stock RS1106 6000KV and a tattu 3s 650mah lipo but I got some mid to high throttle oscillations even on lowered pids and higher tpa and very very hot motors, I think the 6000KV is too high on a 2.5" prop. I went back to the avan micro props but I was considering getting 4x RS1106 4500KV motors and going 4S with "D" in the low 10-12 range (I prefer to fly 4S 450/650 on my stock 2" babyhawk-r, its insane, having low "D" 10-12 and "P" 24-28 it feels locked in with no oscillations and only warm to hot motors) have you had any experience with how the 4500KV would handle on 4S with gemfan 2540?
@Kabab
@Kabab 6 жыл бұрын
All but one tiny motor has gotten blistering hot for me all the time. The only motor that didn't get super hot is the hawksky 1107 6500kv. Hot motors is par for the babyhawk R and other small motors unfortunately. The PIDs are usually a lot lower for 2.5" than stock. Almost half I believe.

Thanks for your review. I realize you mention 2.5" setup is the best but what setup has the closest physics/flight characteristics to a 5"? 2", 2.5", or 3"? 3s or 4s? Power isn't my priority, it's getting the physics closest to a 5" which is the highest of my priorities for a micro.
@Kabab
@Kabab 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think you can actually get it just like a 5" but the closest is gonna be an 1107 or 1108 on 2.5" or 3" with an AUW of maybe 150g max

Hi Bob, could you ask the guys over it Emax if they plan on having an upgraded Magnum stack,? Mybe to an F4 chip with a uart rx and tx. On the babyhawk r 3's current stack I got the crossfire Nano connected and it flies great, but there is no uart TX pin (tried remapping) on the flight controller to receive information back through the receiver, so I have to rely on the information on the OSD. I could just switch out the flight controller for an at 4 but I really like the pinstack design. Don't mean to Ramble On, thank you for your time sir.

@Kabab
@Kabab 6 жыл бұрын
They will work on 2.5 but the motors are low kv so it won't be as zippy. Right after China new year I'll have 3" arms that are much stronger and the same weight available from pirofliprc.com. The stock frame is really an excellent frame. They just cut the arms odd now to make it easier for them to assemble. A bit unfortunate...

Bob,For alot of us micro only guys, it’s not about that you can build a 5” for the same money. It is about having the best performance in the smallest package in order to fly it and race it in more places. This new class of “performance micros” is not in the same class as a entry level Banggood clone micro for $90. Of course you already know that. Love your micro findings!

I have 2 that I have been running top mount on anyway, but it would be nice to have battery strap slots. There really isn't a top mount multi gp spec frame unless you run the hyperlite that way. By the way - if you are a builder/tinkerer type or simply already have some micro quad parts than you will build anyway :) At today if i would start from scratch, I'll probably would buy this Babyhawk because I like how it is designed and how it flies. However I for example already have frames and parts from previous micro brushless quads enough to make a micro brushless comparable to Babyhawk performance. I only don't have that fancy plastic cover which I would have to be hermetic now due to winter :)

Bob, which KV motors in your BabyHawk-R have? Banggood now ship it with Emax RS1106 4500KV. 4500KV is kinda for 4S although I have a bunch of 550 mAh 3S and 2.5" and 2.8" props left after my previous micro who gone AWOL 2 days ago. Interesting, are it will flow on 3S with so slow motors Ok and not like a pregnant cow?

Only flown 1306s and 1407s with a 3" prop. is there any performance gained by fitting a lighter motor like a 1106 with higher kv? given all motors are running the same battery-prop-combo, 3s-4s which ever. Most 3" builds are going with 1407 these days, but I still enjoy my 1306s same as my 1407. I only freestyle with these kwads if thats a factor.

Kabab - In case you're interested - I didn't think I'd regret this because of the names involved, quality components and supposed build, but I do. Arrived today. Out of the box: One of the motor wires is sliced open. The soldering & placement is poorly done on the motor wires. Even the shit stock props don't clear them. Gemfan 2040's would just cut everything (they sit slightly lower). The VTX Antenna is loose from the frame ( zip-tie isn't even attached..just hanging there for no reason) & doesnt clear props. I'm going to have to fully replace some motor wires, re-solder and build the thing back up before I can even use it. I spend my time building/fixing my other quads..the whole point of getting this was less work and more fun in between. Only got so much time to divide up. Sigh. I've contacted their support and provided them pictures. Whatever that does for me.

the issue is the lack of proper motors. For 3" we really need like a 1207 or 1306 motor in 4000kv with 600mah 4S packs and ~175g AUW. This combo doesn't really exist yet. Emax is working on the motors however...

@Kabab
@Kabab 6 жыл бұрын
If the HGLRC actually works and doesn't break or burn, it will probably perform better but it's coming from the other end of the spectrum. motors are too big for 3" and the quad is likely on the edge of overweight. They're both really the same level of questionability but the HGLRC will probably be faster. You'll need a slightly bigger battery for the HGLRC.

To me, smaller is better because I fit in tighter places, i can go to my small park across the street without scaring the neighborhood seniors, they break less and legal faa reasons. Under 250g and can fly like a 5" of course it's going to cost you. Especially at the beginning of the micro era. Just a couple years ago we couldn't find anything that flies like the 3" or 2" quads today. Now we finally have micro 4 in 1 chips that can run amazing software, micro cams and crazy motors/props. Like when the GEPRC Sparrow came out, it was ahead of the game by far, so they knew they would get thier money worth. New tech is going to be pricey until companies like EMAX start setting the others straight. But then again does size even matter to price? Just because a 5" is bigger makes it better? And Isn't it harder to manufacture such small components that can take abuse and keep up with bigger "clunky" quads? Wouldn't everyone just fly 7" or more? I agree, they need to be a bit cheaper, but you have to see why these ill guys cost so much right now. Aaaaaaannd have you ever seen the price of a "quality" 5"? Look at the rotor riot site or DRL. Those things are almost 1k..

Put those 1107 6500kv on that thing and it will be another animal. And without putting those components on it with a Piko blx and some 20a single esc's you can get the price for a bad ass 2.5" or 3" for about $135

For a top quality micro, it's the same price as a 5" and that's the problem for me. I don't agree with spending the same money for little even though I realize that it takes all the same materials and efforts to make the smaller ones. This is where Emax shines. Because they make everything in house except the FPV cam, they can offer these crazy prices. Because they have real pilots from the community now managing their designs, they're coming out with top notch stuff. Best of all worlds. There are still some performance and quality bumps to be had with a DIY high spec build, but you really need to ask yourself if it's worth the extra money...

From other side if you already have a practice in racing/freestyle quad building, you can build a better micro brushless quad as well from parts which you wish and tune it in way what you wish. It even will not cost much more and you are free of thinking where to put all stock crap parts that you will swap for something better in later upgrading. Betaflight 3.2+ make tuning part a child play - already defaults usually are 100% flyable.

KrotowX Very true. I bought a handful of rtf quads only to modify most of them and sell the rest. Now days I spend far more time building and studying flight theory than I actually spend flying lol. Also, most rtf quads tend to have a couple parts that arent very good. This is especially true of micro rtf and bnf quads. Sometimes itll have badass motors only to have a crappy 25mw vtx thats nearly unusable. Other times itll come with a bad camera with aweful lighting or possibly even come broken right out of the box! Its things like this that make building your own more practical IMO. This way you arent spending money on parts you dont even want. I have so many crappy parts that I replaced from bnf quads I could probably build an entire quad. Itd be a flying turd though lol.

@@Kabab actually fitting the same amount of technology into a smaller package does cost more... having said that, I recently bought the parts for a 3" and it was cheaper than my 7" and I didn't shortcut on the parts. That includes the split camera too so don;t have to spend money on a HD cam. Basically sold all my quad gear including the 7" and replaced it all with "better" radio (qx7 to x-lite), better goggles (ev800d to aomway commander), and a 3" quad all for what I got for the 7" with change spare.
I put some steel cable on a quad...
