When I talk to people about what they think as beautiful... it's almost always the little imperfections Photoshop removes. Freckles, hip dips, rounder faces, cute small lips. I think the problem definitely stems from within the profession itself. It’s extremely competitive . These women are constantly surrounded by other gorgeous women and made to work with snide and insecure stylists as well as lecherous and insensitive photographers ( both male and female). Not a life to be envied by any means.

As a mother of 5, I really appreciate your videos! I am constantly in trouble for posting unedited photos with my 20 year old daughter in them. Which I will continue to do because she is naturally beautiful, flaws and all. The unrealistic ideal beauty image of today is unattainable and so unhealthy! I am all for working hard to improve the things that can be changed, but I also believe in accepting the things you cannot…..Love yourself and be proud of your individual beauty!💕 Side note, your hair looks amazing!

Photo editing has been around for as long as photography has been around. In the 1880s there were literally books about manually retouching photos to make the skin smoother and waist smaller. Photographs were always intended as an ‘idealised’ representation of reality. I think we need to shift our expectations. Instead of expecting photos to be unedited, just assume that every photo you see on social media is manipulated in some way or another. This will save you hours of unwarranted self-bashing.

I do think social media is different in that that there are increasingly people who spend more time online than interacting with real life people. And as the algorithms become better at sucking people in to these apps, the near ubiquity of "idealized" bodies online, whether achieved by editing or not, really creates a deeper sense of dysmorphia and hatred towards people's natural bodies. You almost forget what's "normal" for people to look like. I think just seeing more unedited bodies would help a lot of people's (especially young people's) self esteem a lot

I'm so thin xs but i always felt insecure bc these models had flawless cellulite. I thought i was the only one with my thighs/hips not toned like other women. No matter how much skinnier I got, worked out at gym, it just never got toned. I ate healthy no junk. I always wondered how all these ig yt look flawless in bathing suits with their butt and legs so toned. Thanks to Stephanie I learnt how Fake it all is. Everyone has cellulite. No matter how skinny or tiny you are we all have cellulite. It's normal. It finally made me feel so liberated. Now I just embrace it. Instead of trying to overwork in the gym. It's just not realistic to be flawless/ fake normal that we grow up believing that when we get older we're supposed to look flawless and toned. Thank you for posting this, Stephanie. I deeply struggle with body image, to the point that it has made me feel utterly worthless, hopeless, alone, and very depressed. I've lost weight multiple times, but life happens and just steals all my motivation away. I already feel like I am on a different planet than these women. And I'm so afraid that this is all men will ever want, that they'll only ever see me as disgusting and not even one will ever give me a chance. One time when we were watching a noontime show on television where a beauty queen who's a former Miss Universe Philippines, MJ Lastimosa, is a co-host, she wore a semi-fitted dress that episode and my grandmother pointed out MJ's stomach showing through her dress and commented about her having a stomach after all (it sounds milder in English than in our language). I pointed out that this era of beauty is becoming more transparent about human flaws, and women are learning to be more accepting with their bodies. MJ is absolutely gorgeous and her figure is amazing, and I got secretly triggered over the fact that since celebrities are always promoted looking their best, the slightest deduction of their on-screen perfection makes viewers so ready to point it out. The older generations are so fed with magazine models and calendar girls whose stomachs are sucked in and posed in flattering poses that our generation is left to either succumb to the pressure of perfection (like the photoshopping of our own photos) or repair the societal damage the previous generations implemented.

Hi Steph. I love your videos on body image and confidence, and the ridiculousness of society's standards for beauty. But I would live for you to explore why those standards exist. Do they exist because that's what society wants to see, or did the beauty and fashion industry create these standards first and convinced us that "this" is what's desirable? We've done this for hundreds of tears, telling each other how ugly we are and that naturally we are unlovable if we're not perfect. We haven't advanced at all in this area. So maybe we need to accept that we WANT this? People don't look at people posting real stuff on insta that makes them feel better, they look at beautiful rich people who make them feel ugly and poor. Not just impressionable teens, adults too. We like this for some reason.

Let me take another minute to say I cannot believe there are people that say anything negative about your looks, esp the nose comments. I'm not saying this to be kind, I'm being honest: there's nothing wrong with your nose. My nose is my biggest hang up (no pun intended lol) & looking at you & seeing NOTHING wrong when you feel the same way I do has made me think.💕🥺 Also my hair looked SO damaged & I really didn't want to spend salon money for results, so I also had to grab some sleek espresso glaze! ✨👌
