For the woman on the bus situation, during ww2 the black American soldiers at Bamber bridge in England were barred from going in to the white peoples pub by the American Sargents The local white brits had something to say about that and welcomed the black soldiers with open arms. A fight broke out and someone got killed.

The most delightful part of that whole story is when the US MPs objected to the pubs not being segregated and came to tell the British pub owners that they had to segregate by race. With classic Brit deadpan malevolence they all put up signs saying "Blacks only"

The "if you want to be fat: go ahead" argument works for a US system where there is no universal healthcare but for a system we all pay into being obese and all the health complications that brings with it actually costs society as a whole a great deal more than if nobody was obese. I'm not advocating sticking fat people in cupboards just pointing out that being fat DOES impact everyone else in certain scenarios.
@MrEsphoenix
@MrEsphoenix Жыл бұрын
Even in America it impacts society. America has too much of a culture of "if it doesn't directly effect me it's not my problem", but sometimes you need to look at the bigger picture.
@ericforsyth

Same applies to the US. Insurance premiums are affected by the general public's health. Arguably more so than for the NHS. Not to mention premature deaths, reduced work capability, etc. still decrease the amount of tax money collected, as well as the amount of money spent by the individual in private sectors. This, in turn, also means you have to tax others more to get the same proportion of money. Everyone loses.

In the UK, we have the Nhs. But I think for things like treatment for obesity, smoking, alcoholics, drugs, anything where the person knows how much their health will suffer, should pay for treatment, and I don't know, maybe it will deter them. Like if you carry on smoking, and not trying to stop, then you will have to pay for scans, cancer treatment. I don't know. I kind of know I'm trying to say, but don't want to come off as being harsh..
@marywood8794
@marywood8794 Жыл бұрын
The thing with being fat is that sometimes it's caused not just by overeating, like by genetics, etc. Also the problem is you can't stop eating, but you can stop smoking, etc. You have to eat to live, so people with an eating disorder/addiction have a bigger hill to climb in resolving the problem. I'm not saying that other types of addicts don't have to struggle, but you don't have to consume what they're addicted to in order to live.
@ericforsyth

@@marywood8794: The span of metabolic influence on caloric needs is very, very small, save for some extreme outliers (not relevant to 99.9%+ of people). The genetics of addiction are far from fully explored, but its influence there seems much larger than it does over metabolic rates. And nicotine, heroin and alcohol are heavily, heavily addictive. Can't compare that to the addiction to overeating (although that's definitely a very hard one to kick, as well, speaking from experience).

Karl tends to anthropomorphise insects. He thinks they have the same thoughts, desires and needs as humans do. It's a very simplistic, childlike way of thinking but he takes it even further by concocting a whole story around what he observes too. I think it makes him very endearing but it ends up with some crazy, hilarious stories. He should take up writing children's stories, he's a natural.

The UK didn't have those laws. There were some people who put up nasty signs about "no blacks, no irish", but they were not by law and one could ignore them. Of course you might get your head kicked in if you ignored them, so in a way it was nice for the racists to identify themselves. During WW2 the US army had to make a film to teach the troops about living in Britain. One scene involves a black US soldier talking to a nice white old lady on the train. She invites him to tea and then the narrator turns to the camera and explains how that's normal in Britain. This is how different Britain was to the US in regards to race relations and thus it's why we never had the Rosa Parks moment.

@@KarlHamilton It may be shocking if one didn't know the history of the US and UK. I just found it a little sad and at the same time I had some pride in the UK. Yes there were still very unpleasant attitudes around, but we were way ahead of the curve on accepting people for who they are instead of what they are. This country doesn't get near enough credit for these things. A situation which is made worse by the poor and often biased teaching of history in our schools and universities. I have nieces and nephews who are going/have gone through the latest curriculum and they only know the negative things about this nations history. I have had the chance to inject some context into what their teachers have told them, but not everyone will have an uncle who loves history. I think we're seeing the result of this poor teaching in society, the division and anger is getting worse by the day.

Someone who didnt wear a helmet...gets in a crash and is now in hospital taking up resources that other people who may need it but are in the hospital through no fault of their own, say a disease or the recipient of said car accident. Rosa parks purposfully did not move. She knew what she was doing. Parks had a prior encounter with James Blake, the bus driver who demanded she vacate her seat. In 1943, Blake had ejected Parks from his bus after she refused to re-enter the vehicle through the back door after paying her fare at the front. It was a deliberate action made by Rosa Parks. Parks said after being thrown off the first time, that she would never ride on his bus again.

Rosa Parks and the civil rights movement was taught in British schools,I’m older than Karl and I remember it. It’s more that it has no real cultural significance or direct impact for him. It’s not his race or nationality. it would be like learning about ancient Egypt. As for the Darwinian crash helmet stuff or the Libertarian stance. Surely the point is that a warning sign saves more than it damages. If you think it’s silly count yourself lucky to have the cognitive function to realise its absurdity. In effect it’s not really for you. Ultimately their is a reason we have drink driving and seat belt laws. Because as a society we can’t legislate for stupid but can do our best to protect those who aren’t. When the car ploughs into school children at a bus stop or a kid accidentally shoots his sibling with his fathers gun. You have two choices, you throw your hands up in the air and say “Oh Well!” Or you can place parameters so the failings of other people doesn’t affect me or anyone else.

@@MrEsphoenix Your ''whole life''? Wow. Okay quick and final explanation for Eddy. In the above video they express disbelief that there was such concern for insects or 'bugs' as Americans like to group them. My point is that the British, generally speaking, have a higher respect for insects, animals of all kinds actually, (and also humans that are different from ourselves), than Americans do. You don't have to be ''especially empathetic'' towards insects (or any animal) to be more empathetic than most Americans. Only this morning there is a story about a Christmas tree in a British town that has not been taken down yet because there is a pigeon living in it. That would be unlikely to happen in America and they'd consider us mad. ''It's just a pigeon'' you can imagine them mockingly say. I live not far from a hedgehog hospital. So yes, I would say we definitely have a more advanced consciousness than America, but that might be because America is such a new and still stupid country. They'll get there. Hopefully. Okay?
