im really glad that you're back to recording separate takes even for the same instrument instead of copying the same snare take three times. i know that must save a lot of time but the extra time it takes to record it multiple times on each instrument does so much for the sound and look that its just been missing, and it does NOT go unappreciated

These videos make me glad my band’s percussion writer is so great, he did hand write the music almost too messy to read but he made up for it by being the only staff member who was consistently nice to battery

Can you play the roto tom solo part in Pink Floyd's "Time" on your tenors? As recorded? If you ever listen to any live version, Nick Mason never played it the same. Also, the drums are barely there in any live version, bootleg or legit. To me, it's such an iconic part, I have it so memorized I can play it, and I'm no drummer. If that song was ever released on rockband, I would make a video of me playing all the parts cause that song is amazing. Love the channel.

I may need your help on our show this year. Last year he gave some interesting parts and we upped the difficulty. Update : He gave some parts that sounded funny, but it's not as bad as expected. There is this one part that sounds like Jig 2 💀.

The main drumline tech writes the drumline parts, and he is only a snare player. Meaning he writes the tenor parts as just the snare part but on 5 drums a good bit. Thankfully, one of our 2 main front ensemble techs is a wgi tenor and snare player, and was able to change parts and make the tenor part actually interesting.

As a percussion director who has marched Snare, Tenor, Bass, and Cymbals; this is exactly why I write cadence, write warmups, and rewrite every single stock chart my students get for no extra charge, even if it's just a little 2 bar stand tune. I'm not asked to, I want to because I find it necessary. Everything deserves to have a little flair, for one. If your students aren't playing something that's written to be fun, expressive, AND musical in a context where their JOB is to have fun, be expressive, and musical (which is basically all the time); it's counter-intuitive. Especially if they're playing stand tunes or warmups. Those should feel like they have just as much of a performance-level attention to detail and execution as the show, otherwise you're not teaching them how to be proper musicians. You're just teaching them how to prioritize the show book, and having "whatever"-esq charts that aren't proof-read and play-tested, like the show music is, screws with their fundamental priorities if they want to be a professional

What happened to the intro? Holy shit, that cadence didn’t make any sense to me. I can read music just fine, even though it’s been a long time, but holy shit, I’m glad I’m not the only one who would have so much trouble with that. I’ve never ever seen a tie on a rest. Is that just a percussion thing? Melodic stuff doesn’t have that.

I have to disagree with you on tenor drums not being melodic. While that isn't necessarily their primary usage, they can absolutely form melodies and sometimes people (like me) want them to actually sound a specific way -- melodically. So, yes... rhythmic playability shouldn't be compromised for a melody... but just randomly choosing different drums to make things easier and saying it doesn't make a difference... well, that's not entirely true -- at least not for every composer.
