I was able to operate the Canadian Pacific GP20C's at the CP's Bensenville Yard for about five years before I "pulled the pin" and retired. They had a few initial minor issues, but for the most part are pretty decent road/switch units. Really liked things such as the overhead optional use red reading lights, nice warm cab in winter, quieter cab than the old GP-9's, computer information screen, great air conditioning for the summer months and a heated lavatory compartment! Amazing that EMD is able to get so much power out of an 8 cylinder engine (looks like the 16 cylinder cut in half).

It's the Resto-mod of the train world. Granted I love seeing original unmodified units but they mostly exist only on short locals, yard duties, museums, etc. these days. So it makes me happy that there are units that are being repowered rather than being scrapped. I've always loved the look of the standard cab units as that is what I mostly saw when I was a kid in the 80's. So you guys are taking out the old V12's and replacing them with V8's and delivering better power AND efficiency? Got to love technological advancement! :)

Love hearing about EMD rebuilding older locomotives and turning them in to new power, it was hard though to see the one in the beginning being cut up, may it RIP.

The engine as a whole may be gone, but you know her cab, bogies, and other bits helped keep her sisters going. So, a part of her is still out there working hard!

There were some better points about the GP9. One is that they had real brake valves, not fly by wire CCB.

I always get slightly saddened seeing a trusty locomotive get torn down to the bones, but then get happy realizing its being reborn into another trusty locomotive for another 50 years.

That how our Gensets started. Unfortunately, the 30 year old six axle locomotives they replaced were more reliable than the gensets. The 30 year olds had a good reason for breaking down often. The gensets do not they are probably about 6 or 7 years old and we have several breakdowns a week.

BossSpringsteen69 We got rid of all of ours as soon as the rail power lease was up, they were nothing but pure junk and we suspect some VP had a brother in law running the genset factory. In contrast, those repowered units with the little turbocharged 8 cylinder 710 should be a pretty sweet performer.

Ralfie I run those “rebuilt” units at work. They pull pretty well, and came at about the right time. The Geep fleet was pretty warm out.

These things flood the yards in Milwaukee now, replacing the Bandits. Did anyone else notice the SD30ECO is the background behind the GP20 @ 1:32? It's a shame CP hasn't sent in any more SD40s to rebuilt into the 30ECOs. I miss 6 axle EMDs.

I like the SD40 better than the rebuilt. CP has updated the electronics in some, but largely kept them original.

I used to work for progress rail in Bedford Park Illinois as a Carmen😊 of course I'm the kind of guy who worked good for them my boss was Mark hillmer he treated me very good I think it was 4 years I worked for them and then I went to Amtrak in downtown Chicago yard progress rail is a good company they employ a lot of people

Wow, this video has made my day ... Purely because there is a British Class 66 in the background and I've always wanted to see British locomotives along side Canadian/American locos. Aside from that, great video!

+ITL Models You do know here are You Tube vids of those locos, right?Try EWS, EW&S, Freightliner, and Freight Liner... There were some 300 made for EWS and up to another 500-600 made for Freightliner and others... One other thing... the last of the Class 66's were made in 2015... there will be no more made... there will be a new model...

At 37-40 seconds: It looks like the frame is off under the rear of the cab. Is the end product a considerably shorter overall length locomotive?

They have new frames. Other parts are off of the GP9 cores.

I don't think the US allows for 2 Strokes anymore. I'm pretty sure that's a modern 4 stroke turbo diesel.

@@CardboardSliver it is an 8 cylinder 710 two stroke. New locomotive builds must be T4 compliant since Jan 1, 2015. However, rebuilds are only required T2 compliance and the two stroke 710 runs away with that.

I didn't know emd was rebuilding gp9s that are over their service life yet are still operating most gp9s that are around today are almost and over 100 years old

But still most gp9's can't be rebuilt into t4 locomotives as they are either too old are being scrapped are running on a heritage rr or they are in a museum also some have reached their maximum service life and are still being used its the 737-200 and 747 of the railroad market

It's too bad they don't keep their original 567s. What a great prime mover the 567 is. Many GP9s, SD9s, CF7s, and more still run on their original prime mover over 50 years later. The 710, just look at the SD70ACe in terms of reliability and sales compared to GE.

Streamlined Steamroller the 567 isn't actually as "good" as the 645, many of which are still in service, especially in older units that came with the 567. There are few units using the 567 because of parts limitations. That having been said, one could examine the entire line of units with the 710, 265, and 1010, including new T4 and "eco" rebuilds, and see why GE is now the world leader in new locomotive production. Railroads want power that runs and pulls with little or no extra attention. They want power that will consistently "do more", above and beyond its tonnage rating. They want safety, and they want low operating costs. That ain't EMD. It's GE.

P Kranz More locomotives were built with the 645. Already there were nearly 4000 645 equipped SD40-2s produced. And of course, they are older which means more wear and tear. Believe it or not, other 3rd party companies are still producing 567 parts including valves, pistons, cams, etc. Yes I am aware what the railroads are doing today but to be completely honest, I do not see these new eco units lasting in service nearly as long as the original units. Integrated circuits fry, emission computer just adds more complexity, while an all original geep or SD has foolproof electromechanical circuitry. The primary example of the longivety of the 567 was Southern Pacific's SD9s which ran in service from the time they were built in 1954 to 1958 all the way up until the UP merger in 1996. Yes, I do agree it is more convenient for big class 1 railroads to repower but they're throwing money away. Just to clarify, by my 710 comparison, I was conveying EMD is basically in the toilet as of now. If any other company were to start producing locomotives for the American freight market, bye bye EMD.

When I worked for Conrail all the upgraded GP7's, 8's, 9's and 10's were 567 engine blocks but used 645 power assembly's for more economical parts. They worked great and simply used a 567 injector for the original 567 engine and were upgraded by 100 horsepower by retuning the governor.

Are these repowers still available in 2023? Say if I sent an old geep or failed geep to you guys, could I still get a CP rail equivalent GP20-eco ? What about repowering something like a former CSX road slugger while maintaining its outward cab and longhood appearance on say a GP30 slug? Just curious. I know a few people who might be interested.

Cool ! I hope EMD or GE remakes CP`s SD90MAC-H`s . all of the units were scrapped . CP 9300-9303.

Trainboy Productions There are very good reasons they were scrapped - the biggest of which was that they were junk. Good riddance !!!

Trainboy Productions GE, by the way, doesn't make EMD products. They make GE products. EMD did use quite a bit of the SD90 design - which originally came from the SD80 - and used it in the SD70-Ace clunkers. The early SD70Macs were a very good, solid unit. They couldn't pull anything like an AC44, but good for an EMD. Later 70's used SD90 tech, and they went to hell. EMD has not had a new Tier 4 unit - or *any* new unit available for road freight service since 2014. Now that they've scrapped the 1010 engine and are trying a Cat, they might have a chance, but it can't use DEF, like the F125 passenger engine.
