Can you tell me why this locomoive has metal plating on /near the radiator intakes ?
@hermankoerts8185 Жыл бұрын
@@PBSAM410-Oficial If I understand you well, the locomotives were built for another user, with these plates. But they were sold to Ferromex and there these plates were taken off ?
@espeescotty Жыл бұрын
The answer is that those plates, nicknamed "elephant ears", are designed to draw air for the radiators from lower down, just above the walkways, so that the engine won't overheat so easily in long tunnels. EMD locomotives have radiator intakes that are high on the hood, and when in long tunnels, the heat and exhaust fumes from engines in the lead fowls up the air for engines that are further back in the consist, which causes the trailing engines to overheat and derate or stall out, thus causing the train to stall in the tunnel or slow down greatly, making things even worse.

Thank you for your answer. So, I understand the reason is the same as for the SD40T and SD45T, the "Tunnel motors". As far as I know these were used on Southern Pacific. @@espeescotty

@@hermankoerts8185 That's exactly right. About 1970/1971, EMD created and tested these elephant ear baffles on about 8-10 Southern Pacific SD45's and several SD45X's and they found that the idea had merit and that led to the design of the SD45T-2 which as you know has their intakes just above the walkways. The SD45T-2's came out in 1972 and the SD40T-2's came out in 1974. The elephant ears were used again for a short while on the SP when the GP40X's were delivered.

@@espeescotty Thanks for your reaction. I bet the "espee" in your name stands for Soutern Pacific, 🙂
