Well this time I was in the correct area and the right side of the tracks for this crew change. The gentleman that was walking up to the train from the road asked me if I was waiting to film the train that was on its way. Oh yes I was and he told me of the crew to change which I already knew about, 203 always has a crew change at Bristow, there is a NS office there. So the train comes, makes the change and takes off. This Intermodal train started in Rutherford, Pennsylvania and is southbound to Atlanta, Georgia.

On that famous at speed photo of a night express passenger run. I was looking for the stationary contrasting subject in that long ago photograph, in your video. In the last frame of your excellent video I found it. its the unoccupied building in the last frame of your video. In the B/W photograph it was described as Bristow Station's General Store. And in that long ago photo, the photographer lingered his shot long enough to observe the stack of fresh newspapers (the later that mornings edition). That had been left still bundled on the front porch of the store. The caption under the photo advised that an earlier slower local had dropped the news paper delivery off at the store for when the owner showed up later that morning. The author also mentioned that the station was normally routinely supplied by local "branch line" delivery service. Which, by the late 1940s - 1950s was on the way out.

Thank you, sometimes it can take about 10 minutes for making a crew change. Sometimes you can hear the engines making all different noises and I like keeping them in if possible. But generally the guys see me filming and are very nice, most don't mind you filming them. Sometimes they will talk to me which would be an extra in my vid. Thanks for watching, I'm happy you liked my video. Take care and stay well :-)))

Thank you very much for watching my video, the last time I tried to catch a crew change the engineer passed where I was filming and went down to where this train made the change. So that other train blocked a street for about 15 minutes. So I was not only in the wrong place but also was on the wrong side of the tracks, so I missed it all, lol. You just never know where they will make that change but always within the same area. I’m glad you enjoyed watching this crew change that many people don’t get the chance to see :-))

I’ve seen this a few times, what is good about it is that you can spend time taking many pics if you want. These trains block streets up to about 15 minutes each time. So I’m sure there are some angry people that live in the area. I just hope none of them decide to beat it to the crossings. Thanks for watching my video, I’m glad you liked it :-))

While I was walking up to a crossing my right foot went into a hole. It twisted and I I tried to use my left foot to keep from falling. Well the left foot twisted and I fell on it. Broke both ankles. Last night I had an operation on my left ankle, it was worse. They gave me a pain block that only lasts about 15 hours. That will wear off soon. They will probably put a cast on my right leg, but if I can't put weight on it then I'll have to use a wheelchair. If I use a wheelchair then I would need to stay in a rehabilitation center for weeks. Everything is up in the air now.

Nick Pettit an engineer always waves, sometimes he gives a great horn show along with a great wave. I get a lot of waves and sometimes more horn salutes than most guys. The guys all say because I’m a female I get more. I hope your dreams came through for you. My late father in law was an engineer for 40 years and his father worked for the railroad for 50 years. Several other family members also worked for the railroads. Not all of them loved it but it was a job for them. The crews no longer stop here to recrew. Thanks for watching my video. :-))

Hello. I have two questions. 1. why does the new crew not check the locomotive equipment? for example, there may be some kind of breakdown that the old team did not notice. 2. what punishment will you receive for violating the rules of using brakes?

Many times the defect detector will tell the conductor and engineer what kind of problems that the train has. If a conductor knows of a possibility of a problem they will tell the new crew what might happen. Unfortunately the new conductor can’t walk the train, sometimes the trains are up to 3 miles long. There are rules that the crew must follow that allows them to use the brakes or not and I don’t know what they would be. Thanks for watching my video :-))

Nice catch. It's interesting that they don't have the crew coming off duty do an inspection of each side of the train.

That would be a good thing if they would do that but I guess it would take too long. This train is headed southbound which means that there is a steep hill it’s stopped on. I don’t think a conductor would want to walk down the hill for about 2 miles then walk back up. I guess that’s what the detectors do, they check for problems the train might have. Thanks for watching, I’m glad you liked my video :-))

@@kgirl4078 you're welcome. What I meant was here in Canada, a crew member stands on each side of the train and watches as the locomotives and each car roll by, then after the last car rolls by, radio the departing crew if all is good. No walking any great distance involved. :)
@kgirl4078

Yes that is a great idea. I doubt the conductor or engineers want to wait around as the train take off, but it probably is something they should do. I watched a crew change northbound one day and almost as soon as the new engineers took over and may have gone a short distance, they had problems. They had to go into emergency and stop, a good part of the train was still in the same place I was filming. If I had thought about it I could have driven to another location and caught him again. But by the time I got there the engines had already passed.

The train was ok ! This was a crew change. The first crew has already put in their 8 hours and now time for them to get some rest while a new crew comes and drives the train for their 8 hours. This train 203 always stops here everyday to make the change. Thank you very much for watching my video and I’m glad you liked it :-))

I have seen many crew changes. And this one I felt my uncle Jim who was a railfan who said Norfolk Southern was a nice railroad. Sady he is gone. And my mother's father. Who worked for the Die-Bahn in Germany Pre-war and post war Europe . As a engineer. Both steam and electric. And they say. The Die Bahn is Europe and Germany's Norfolk-Southern.

Wow, that’s very interesting. I had an uncle that worked for the railroad Pre-War too but was killed in a submarine attack. There were 14 that survived but only 8 made it to shore near MidWay. That was a long time ago and before I was born. I’ve only been rail fanning a few years, most of the younger kids know more about trains than I do. My father in law retired from Southern RR about 34 years ago and he tells some great stories, he was with different railroads for 45 years, his son worked for 2 railroads too. Then his father was with the RR for 50 years. It must run in their blood. My father in law started with steam then went to Diesel engines. South of Washington DC there was no electric trains, I don’t know of any anywhere other than north of DC. I like Norfolk Southern more than CSX at times because they seem to have more trains running each day. Oh yeah, my father in law was an engineer as well but not his father or son. I’m happy you liked my video, thanks. Stay safe out there :-))

@@kgirl4078 hey Kathy if you ever get to go over to Germany. We should check out there steam fest. The best place to film. Is a small town called Kornwestheim. Where my grandfather. And rail fans are encouraged to film. As long as you do it safely and you don't trespass on the property. One thing about the Die Bahn. Not only did they have the steam fest and they have the rail-fest

Why there was a crew change for around 150 miles travel?
@kgirl4078
@kgirl4078 2 жыл бұрын
There are several reasons that it could be. Trains 203 always has a crew change here at Bristow, Virginia These trains come south from the north west, they run thru mountains so the image might be different in track miles. With all the twists and turns they do have slow down. Also the crew could get off and take train 204 back and do it all over the next day. Also this is an stack train, they could have worked a yard or the VIP ( Virginia Inland Port). This is where the stack trains add or remove some of the containers to go to different locations. Thank you for watching my video and asking this question. Please take care and stay safe :-))

It depends on how many hours this crew has worked. If they only work about 6 hours then they could take 202 back or if they worked all day then they would go to a hotel the NS has set to use. Then the next morning would take 202 back. Thanks for watching my video and thanks for asking this question, many people don’t know what they do. Take care :-))

Yeah it’s about time ! Well I figured that the north bound trains should change on the south side of the street. That way they wouldn’t block the street for so long. I’ve seen it changed there once before. I knew the southbound train should change where I stood this time. Well I’m glad you got to see the crew change this time ! And again I had to take out parts of the train just sitting there while the new crew took over. And after they started moving I took out some and then I sped up the train since it takes a long time for the train to get up to speed. So in all I took off 7 minutes of video LOL !

a couple of newbie questions. Why three crewmen? I thought they only needed an engineer and conductor. Also, I was wondering what gear they carry on board with them. They all seem to have a large backpack, a zip-up luggage bag and a white ditty bag, Some crewmen carry coolers - I presume that for their meals.

One of the guys is a trainee so that's why there are 3. This train started in Rutherford, Pa. And runs down to atlanta, GA. But their crew change us here in Virginia, they can not run past a certain limited hours. They bring a change of clothes because the next day they will take the train back to Rutherford, Pa., they spend the night at a designated location here. The sometimes brings food and drink along with them. Years ago some engineers would stop at a location knowing if a restraunt they can get something quickly. Don't ever think or be afraid to ask questions, this us how you learn. Thank you for watching my video, I'm happy to help as much as I can. I am kind of a newbie myself, I can't tell one locomotive from another for The most part. :-))

Crew change, normally takes about 20 minutes roughly. This was the fastest change I have seen. Is it because the locomotives are quite new? Enjoyed watching this video. Thank you 😊.

I don’t know if this locomotive is new or not, the crew that was on the train may not have had any problems to let the other crew know about. I have seen the crew talk for a good long time at times. This train may have been behind schedule and needed to get back on schedule. The crew I’ve seen have always been very nice. I enjoy watching these crew changes, this location has about 4 a day. Thank you very much for watching my video, I hope you liked it :-))

@@kgirl4078, the retiring crew was polite to greet you too. Seems that you have edited the footage, so I really can't be sure about the time taken by them. The acceleration at the end of the video was really nice to watch. Don't the crew carry brake sticks with them? You have done a wonderful coverage, Kathy.
