Did you know, that the landing party of Emden actually made it back to Germany. After they knew they were trapped on the island they took a seaworthy Sailboat that was anchoring there to Batavia [Jakarta]. From there they were shipped by a liner to the ottoman empire at the southern tip of the Arabian peninsula. And from there they went via train first Istanbul and then carried on to Berlin.

The surprise attack by SMS Emden on Madras City(now Chennai) in September 1914 had a great psychological and cultural impact on the minds of the local people. It created such a scare that the word 'Emden' has entered the native lexicon and means 'Boogeyman' in native language.

The story of the landing party that were left behind on the island just before Emden engaged the Sydney is also quite spectacular. The Great War channel talks about them on their video on the Emden. Apparently they found an old, rotting schooner that they somehow managed to fix up enough to be sea worthy, sailed to the Dutch East Indies where they stopped briefly before deciding to try and make their way towards the Ottoman Empire. They eventually met an Austrian cargo ship, which dropped them off at modern day Yemen. There they met a party of local soldiers(?) and fought their way trough the Arabian desert with them, before eventually reaching Constantinople. What a journey.

It is always so great to hear stories like these about knights which fought with both honor and capability, in such wars where the enemy is considered the literal devil it is nice to see men being a threat towards their enemies yet always maintaining respect towards them, these are the real heroes of war and we should all learn something from them, especially the politicians which decided the peace conditions should have taken a slice of that, it would have saved us a lot of blood if they had. Anyway, again great video and great topic you covered, I'm already excited for your next video, keep up the great work!

The Emden's exec officer, Hellmuth von Mucke, led the shore party. They witnessed the arrival of the Sydney, and ensuing destruction of their vessel. Before the Sydney returned to Direction Island, the shore party commandeered the schooner Ayesha and fled. Von Mucke led his party of 50 men on a 6-month 10,000 km odyssey back to Germany, via Arabia and Constantinople, with only four casualties. There is a short book, "The Last Corsair" by Dan van der Vat, that describes the saga of the Emden and her crew. A longer treatment is "The Last Gentleman-of-War" by Lochner/Lindauer.

A few details were missed. The French destroyer outside Penang actually crossed paths with the Emden before the bombardment and the captain mistook the Emden for a British cruiser due to the dummy funnel. The French captain actually thought the Emden was a British cruiser right up to the moment Emden opened fire on his vessel. To his credit, he paid for his mistake by going down with his ship instead of escaping with his crew. Another detail is in how the battle of the Cocos was concluded. After the Emden was beached the Emden crew considered the ship surrendered and began evacuating wounded sailors from the lower decks to be laid out on the top deck. However due to the fire and the collapsed funnel, the crew were unable to lower the German naval ensign flying on the stern. Sydney left to hunt down the Marcomannia and after capturing her, Sydney returned to the Emden but couldn't decide whether or not the ship had surrendered as the ensign was still flying. Deciding to err on the side of caution, the Sydney opened fire again and unfortunately killed a number of the wounded sailors who had been laid out on the deck before a few of the German sailors decided to brave the flames and lower the German ensign. And another detail although only partially related, is the story of von Mücke's landing party and the journey they undertook, sailing a wooden schooner to Ottoman Arabia and then travelling overland to Germany.

The story didn't end there. The landing party the Emden left on the island decided to make their way back to Germany instead of surrendering. They took a small sailing vessel and made their way across the pacific to the Arabian peninsular, crossed the desert fighting Bedouines, and finally arrived in allied Istanbul. At home they were welcomed as heros. Sadly most of them had to join frontline troops and died later in the war.

One of my favourite YT channels, you seem to keep on improving since I first subscribed. Great video! Also the Narrator has done a fantastic job! As well as the choice of music, which I keep coming back to listen to.

The descendants of those crew members who opted to add the ship's name to their surnames still do so today. Since "double barrel" names have become quite common in Germany, only few people are aware of the meaning of the added "-Emden" as most people rather think of the coastsl town the ship had been named after. My wife once met a lady with an -Emden name, remembered this bit of knowledge without practical use and asked her about the connection. Mrs xxx-Emden was genuinely surprised anyone knew and confirmed that her ancestors had been on the ship.

I had recently watched another video on the Emden. I'm so glad I watched this soon after. What a contrast! The first video was fine. But your presentation really brought home the expanse of the Emden's travels, the character of her gentleman captain, the quality of her crew (especially her gunnery division), and the drama of each encounter. Well done! I'm your newest subscriber!

In the late 1960's I was a member of the RANR Cadet Corp on Schnapper Island in Sydney. This unit was T.S. Sydney and had many different items from the S.M.S Emden and H.M.A.S Sydney on the main Deck of the. this included a Ships compass and complete map of the battle between these two ships. Later on the cadet unit was moved and all the items from Schnapper Island have now been moved to Garden Island in Sydney. As a cadet at this unit We were aught about this battle as part of our history with the unit named after the first Sydney.
