After Calugareni, Sinan Pasha held his nerve and didn't retreat. He had more troops coming over the Danube and he refreshed his army due to the vastly superior Ottoman resources in men and material. The Ottoman Empire was a superpower, which could recover from defeats such as Calugareni, while Wallachia was a local power and could therefore not afford any mistakes in this conflict. When Calugareni didn't open the way for Michael to stop the Ottoman invasion, he had only one more chance at Giurgiu... 🚩 If you'd like to support what we do, you can do so on Patreon: www.patreon.com/historymarche - By joining us on Patreon you get to see our videos before everyone else, ads free, and periodically you can vote to choose topics for our channel.

@autnocens5 жыл бұрын
@@RS-kt6is I suspected you thought about epoca fanariota, but even then there was no annexation. The rulers were appointed from Istanbul but they still had to abide by the country's rules. Some were even good administrators and at least one deserves our respect for standing up and losing his head because he protested the annexation of Bucovina declaring the Ottomans had no right to cede to the Habsburgs a part of Moldova principality. Keep in mind the Vladimirescu revolt and later Cuza's reforms were quite clearly directed against Greek influence also, not only against the Ottomans. You can argue the Phanariotes were less connected to the land and it is true, but they didn't act as Ottoman pashas and no Turkish migration or Muslim religious penetration was allowed. Subservient, yes, annexed, no. One can safely say there never was a full annexation of either Valahia or Moldova. By anyone.

But let's not forget that the Ottomans were the aggressors, they were thugs with a large army.
@HistoryMarche5 жыл бұрын
@@Ragnarok__ That's a fair statement. But then again, every Empire or big Kingdom usually acts the same - exploit whoever they can exploit. Austria was certainly no kinder to Hungarians, as well as the Carpathian and Balkan nations imo. So the Ottomans did pretty much what every empire does - conquer. One could even argue that if Michael managed to fully unite the three principalities he would've done the same if he had the resources at his disposal, probably every ambitious leader would. In fact, there is proof in contemporary sources that Michael's main ambition was to start a ruling dynasty over the unified Dacian kingdom, which would also include Vlachs in Bulgaria and beyond - and his ambition was to become a power player in Europe. But you are correct, in this war, the Ottomans were the aggressors. I just wanted to point out that none of the elites who participated in this war were righteous or just. These were all ambitious powerful people, what we would today call the one tenth of one percent who move the pieces on the political chess board, while the rest of us below them are left to pick up the pieces.

@ I had a conversation with psych0 liberal racist americans who were denying this fact. If you want to spill your guts out vomiting read about the batak genocide of bulgarians in the 1800's perpetrated not by turks but janissaries (fellow eastern europeans kidnapped from their parents converted to islam and turned into loyal ottoman soldiers). Those people were taught to impale people by the turkish empire. It's similar to what the turks did to greeks and armenians but maybe even worse. You will not be able to sleep for 3 days after reading that story. They impaled little bulgarian children up to 6 years of age and forced their parents to watch. It's freaking disgusting.

I mean I know Buzau people are a bit crazy, and fierce in battle, but to massacre an army of 5000 raiders... that's a lot! Nearly 300 years later, during the Independence War, a Buzau region officer (Alexandru Candiano Popescu) would lead the 2nd Hunters' Battalion of Ploiesti (my home town) to the first Romanian victory - the assault over Grivitsa.

Michael the Brave, named by enemies Malus Dacus (Bad Dacian) was killed in Turda, in 9 aug 1601, by the mercenaries of Giorgio Basta. Basta was sent by emperor Rudolpf to help Mihai as an ally. When the emperor Rudolpf understood that Mihai Vitezul is too strong after the unification of the three Romanian countries, Tansilvania, Moldova and Walachia, he ordered Basta to kill him. Mihai received Basta's mercenaries as old comrades, invited them to the table. They attacked him mischievously, from the back. Mihai was very strong. It was 2m high, which was very much in the middle ages. Mihai killed one with the sword, but was pierced with the spear at the back. The other two fired their guns at him. After death they cut off his head. His faithful soldiers were not allowed to bury him. After 3 days they managed to bury him in secret. The head was taken by them south to Walachia at Dealu Monastery near Targoviste. Recently in the ruins of the Plaviceni monasteries in Teleorman, in special tomb was found, the skeleton of a very tall man of 2m, without head, who had neck vertebrae sectioned by a metal object. And as a strange coincidence, the Plaviceni Monastery was built by Mihai Vitezul's wife, Doamna Stanca. Historians assume that this would be the remains of Mihai the brave man who was secretly brought from Transylvania, at the request of Doamna Stanca. They want to make a DNA test and compare it with head DNA, but the Orthodox church opposes it. Do you know anything about this hypothesis? kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXmtdaGImr-kl6s
