If I might make a recommendation as to an external mic, many years ago I discovered that Audio-Technica makes outstanding stereo mics. I had a pro camera with 48V phantom power, so I got an AT-825, which could also be powered by a single AA battery. At the time, they also made the AT-822, with a 3.5mm stereo cable and used battery power exclusively. The only difference was in sound pressure level (SPL) rating and dynamic range, but both are excellent for railfanning, as they don't overload on horns or wheel flange squeal. They are also compact, very lightweight, and almost immune to handling noise. Add a windbreaker from Rycote, and you can use them in a hurricane and have no wind noise at all! Currently, I have the latest iteration, the A-T BP4025 mic, equipped with a Rycote "ball gag" windbreaker. I've tried other makes and models, but I think A-T makes the best stereo mics overall. Remember, investing in a quality mic is like investing in a quality lens for an SLR: you'll never lose money on it.

I have a pro video app on here but I haven’t taken the time to test it out. It has a setting to lock the mic to the front. I will have to test it in the field to see if it works.

Awesome catches and video! So this is what happened ahead of NS 42G. I got him in Buford, GA and then it went into emergency. Anyways. That's so shocking that a knuckle on the train would break. The Greenville and Piedmont Districts have not fared well this year so far.

I specifically did not film them fixing the broken knuckle. I have been told on more than one occasion that the crews do NOT appreciate being filmed while they work. The railroad watches these videos looking for anyone violating safety rules so they can fire them. So out of respect for the crews I do not film them when they are on the ground working. I don’t want anyone getting fired.

If they weren’t bunching up and pulling apart then it could always just be metal fatigue. A crack eventually breaking.

They're hoppers (unload through the bottom) not gondolas (unload out the top). And are you sure they're coal cars? Hoppers that short are usually used for denser product like stone.

I can definitely tell you’re a foamer verses a railroad employee based off of your attitude on here lol Knuckles don’t break because of PSR. Couplers, their pins, and drawbar pins and intentionally engineered to be weak points to spare a piece of rolling stock and it’s contents damage if excessive forces are applied within the train. Hence why knuckles have been breaking since the dawn of this industry. They develop stress fractures and fail periodically due to the abuse they take. The broken E5 knuckle I use as a doorstop is proof of that. Also, that “switch car” is a MoW car carrying two pieces of panel track. One per side. They’re bolted to the car. They aren’t going anywhere. The tank car in front of it isn’t displaying any hazmat placards indicating flammable contents. Hence why it, along with others, are scattered throughout the train This is common sense and easily accessible information guys. The world doesn’t need more entitled wannabe know it all’s spouting off. But, on the off chance that hell should freeze over, and we need to be told how a multi-century long industry works, we know right where to find you guys. Stay safe and happy foaming. -Over two decades and counting working for UP.

The horn blowing is very crackly and the later videos of the grain train the volume is practically bottomed out. I’ll keep working on it. People say I should just buy a video camera. Then I have to lug that around with me everywhere and keep my car locked when I’m out and about. I used to carry a camera and bags and tripods everywhere with me. It made it more like a job than a hobby. This is how I shoot videos and this is how I do my hobby. It’s supposed to be fun. I’ll make it work. :)

Someone posted a scathing message about NS blocking the crossings when the knuckle broke and went on and on about how this affects people trying to get to work or to the airport. What the fuck are you talking about? Seriously. Are people this stupid? There are dozens of places you can cross the tracks within half a mile of this spot. There are two overpasses on either side less than a block away. If you’re sitting here stuck at the crossing by a train you’re an idiot. Go to the next crossing or overpass. This is a commercial area. The only people who use these crossings are trucks going to one of the chicken plants or feed plants. Nobody is late for work or trying to get to the damn airport. Maybe next time use your brain and look on the map before making stupid comments. You look dumb.
