I'm a 310 owner. If anyone here buys a 310, the FIRST thing you should do is have a competent shop inspect and RIG the gear as per the maitenance manual, including the motor. Simply 'swinging the gear' is unacceptable. It's a well engineered system, but must be rigged.
@therealjimmysworld9 ай бұрын
100% agree
@wakkogn93519 ай бұрын
What does that mean?
@Avi8tor8579 ай бұрын
@@wakkogn9351 The gear system is a complicated set of leavers, arms etc. They all have adjustments. If any of the adjustments are out of whack then it puts additional strain on the motors/joints. By "rigging it" you are getting all parts in adjustment so that they work with minimum strain and wear. It often has enough power to push through bad adjustments and hides it by simply doing a swing test.

Airline pilot with more than 15.000 flight hours and been in few emergencies I can say you did the right decision. As soon the fire hazard was eliminated by pulling out fuse…., then there was no time critical emergency. As you perfectly explained you had time to think and review landing gear issues. Despite your limited experience you make the right choose and didn’t stress out or panicked that’s means your professional skills are good and I congratulate you. If someone tells you otherwise just answer back : I will love to see you in that circumstance. You can be proud of yourself. Take care Jimmy and all the best.

A ballsy honest video Jimmy. Respect Sir. 1. You could’ve put it on jacks and carried out mechanical and electrical rigging checks, 10 swings for confidence after an eight month lay up and if all is normal off jacks and go flying. The motor may or may not have failed during the swings. 2. You flew the first leg with no issues. 3. If the maintenance manual doesn’t call for brush wear checks, you won’t know until it fails. 4. The electrical connection to the brush may have caused the brush itself to break down or the brush breaking down may have caused the electrical connection to fail, either way it was goosed. The thing is you worked the problem methodically, got the gear down, got the plane down and stepped out of it. Others may do it differently but you were in the hot seat. Well done

Hoover did a debrief of a video "FlyWithKay" did where he basically congratulated her on making smart decisions. I think the same would go here. Aviation is all about conservative decision making. Mike Patey turned me onto the three strike rule with his Turbulence engine explosion video and I now apply it to all my decision making as far as when to fly or not. When you're in the air it's the same story, except at that point you just need to take care of yourself. I hope to have the same calm as Jimmy did if (God forbid) I ever have an in-flight emergency...

Years ago I had a very similar problem with my Debonair. Worn brushes hung up on their wires, combined with a slightly out of round commutator, resulted in a dead motor. Had I turned the crank slightly they probably would have made contact and got the gear down electrically, but I didn’t know that at the time. I hand cranked the gear down successfully. Hand cranking is much more difficult in flight than it is when sitting on jacks. The air load on the nose gear makes a big difference. Your decisions were sound, and I am glad that you had a good outcome.

So glad for everyone involved - the crew AND family - that everything turned out OK in the end - 'just' a burned-up landing gear motor. pulling the breaker was the correct response. Just about anyone can fly a plane when things are going well. It is when the 'schtuff-hitting-the-oscillating-ventilateur' that pilot training is for. i.e.: knowing the systems and what to do when any one-, two- or three of them conspire against our wishes. As you said in the beginning of this video - it is up to the old gray matter between the ears to minimize the risks - yes risks - of flying, and to do it in the safest manner possible. That is why good pilots will do a complete pre-flight check - following a checklist - so nothing is overlooked before EVERY flight. A lot can happen in three hours of flight with vibration. Nuts/pins/screws come loose - check those aileron hinge cotter pins. Wires and cables can rub and chafe - almost fifty years ago one of my instructors told me to 'shake your tail-feathers' (elevators/rudder) to check for excessive play. Water can get into the fuel at a fueling stop - sump it!. If the weather changes enroute, be prepared to postpone the flight. Don't fall victim to 'get-there-itis'! Risk assessment!!!

Jimmy. that was truly a FINE example of how to handle in-flight emergencies. You first evaluated the situation (most importantly, did not panic), considered options, chose the best one, briefed on emergency procedures thoroughly, and the outcome was as successful as one could ever hope for. This video would be a great training tool for someone learning to fly. I think that Hoover on Debrief would completely agree with me. Also, it was nice to see you serious for a change - you've had me worried at times over the last two years, but I see that you have very sound judgement.

That kind of thinking in the air is how you break the swiss cheese model and get out alive. You also did well not to fixate on the problem (you noted how you were keeping an eye on airspeed as you cranked the gear). People have crashed planes just because the door came open during the flight. As pilots, we should always have a plan and NEVER stop flying the airplane. Talking to ATC, using their advice, using folks on the ground to check your aircraft, etc are all great ways to get home alive.

I'm for one glad you made a simple normal landing. All to often on social/forums you see people saying you should of chopped the ignition/mixture on final to save the engines if the gear is questionable... Far safer to land normally and deal with the aftermath than to try to reduce the bill for the insurance company if it collapsed. I'm sure you would of had minimum damage even if you had to gear up land it. It is great also that you went through the decision making process and made the best decision for you, that often gets cut on youtube for obvious reasons. I would say if you don't have one add a smoke hood to your flight bag with a good respirator, people think oh I can hold my breath, or suck air from the vent... with the heat and smoke involved triggering your body to go into fight mode your body wants to desperately take a breath, it is impossible to fight. I discovered this with a battery fire at my house, I went to put it out thinking I'll spray it and run out of the room, it was all I could do to hold my breath for the seconds... ran out to my shop grabbed a 3m respirator and additional fire extinguishers, and welding gloves. Was able to put it out (but had to rebuild the room as the fire had spread to the wall). I'm not one for regulations but having a smoke hood really should be a self imposed rule for us GA pilots.

Jimmy been there, done that. I had a Piper Navaho that I was ferrying in the Caribbean that had an electrical failure that resulted in lost communications (I carried a portable) and my gear wasn’t confirmed down. After I had the same logical discussions with myself as you did, I cranked the gear down and prayed for a good landing. Luckily the gear held and I had an uneventful landing. From that point on, I always carried a backup portable radio and a jacket to stuff in the cabin door to prevent entrapment should I need to bail out of a buckled door frame. Fore armed is just as equaled as having an alternate plan!

You handled the situation very well. Glad you were able to make it through this at the expense of some gasoline and a gear motor. Hope you continue to fly for many years without another incident like this but I bet you never forget it and a gear motor inspection will be part of every annual as long as you are flying an aircraft with electric retracts. This could happen on a 15 year old aircraft just as well as on a 60+ year old aircraft. Have a good vacation in the Bahamas. Looking forward to seeing what the new bird will be. Remember that GTSIO in the prefix of a flat engine description is a ticket to complexity and major expense. IMHO that makes a clean used King Air look better every day.

Jimmy I'm really glad that you made it back to the ground safely and with no harm to yourself or the Silver Bullet. Maybe you might think of not leaving it so long between flights if your planes in future, although in this case it was not the cause of the problem. Listening to the replacement motor, that sounds as if it is finding it a struggle to lift the gear. Are you sure that there isn't one of the legs slightly binding anywhere in its travel? If that were the case it would probably be the reason the wire came off if the brush due to it drawing too much amperage and almost melting the wire. You should also check the breaker for the gear because that should have tripped when the first motor struggled to work. You yourself found the crank handle very tight and it then freed off and I bet that was NOT the motor causing that. If the breaker is working properly I bet it should have tripped when testing the replacement motor as I really did seem to be struggling.. I'm not an aero mechanic, but I've been doing mechanical stuff all my life and I'm 70 now and what I saw worries me for yours and your family's safety. Also I find it strange that with most areo technology there have system redundancies built in. This poor little motor has to struggle to lift not just one leg and wheel but three of them! How crazy is that? I'd want a motor on all three legs, maybe arranged so that they can all work together to get the gear up, and a safety solenoid arrangement to disengage a motor if it starts to struggle with the load and draws too much current. And the other two complete the operation.
@victorm569 ай бұрын
I agree, I'm an elecrician by training and work history. Either that motor is severely undersized for the load it is doing, or there is some kind of mechanical binding going on. Seeing all the burnt crap fall out of that motor, made my heart drop. That circuit breaker needs to be checked, should of tripped beforethe motor burned up. I bet one or more of the pivoting points in the gear is binding or needs to be lubricated. As an electrician, most problems with motors are due to mechanical failures on the driven pice of equipment.

I love how you walked us through the decision tree and why you handled the emergency the way you did. You did everything by the book.
