I heard this has nothing to do with the environment. I heard It has to do with land developers wanting the land that is being used by fish farms. The man appointed to be in charge of the FFW is a land developer/builder not a conservationist or someone with credentials. Making it illegal just makes it incredibly easy to snatch of the land and they would all go backrupt in very short period. Why else would this be a sudden "revelation." Normally if there was environmental concerns they'd be discussed openly for an extended period of time but all the sudden every fish is a problem? Why a white list instead of a black list for one? there are like 30,000+ species in the trade and only like 200 of those have even been looked at in terms of this list. There are endangered species that would be extinct without the people caring for them and breeding them.

It’s crazy because aquaculture has been around for thousands of years, with the earliest records of koi and goldfish being from the 4th century if not older, with earliest records of aquaculture itself being from 4580yrs ago involving the aborigines and short finned eels, this is something that has been around for a very long time

I have a reef tank in Georgia, and I agree that the proposed white list is way too harsh. But you can not say that we have been polluting/producing CO2 since we have started to use fire, and thus we can just forget about global warming. What we are doing is on a totally different scale. Something needs to be done, but needs to be done in a proper and reasonable way.

@coreymelanson6729
@coreymelanson6729 Жыл бұрын
I've seen this topic discussed a lot recently. Clearly many shop owners & breeders believe they will be severely impacted by new regulations &/or restriction which they may very well be. Florida is a very unique case though; it is the extreme outlier. It is state that has seen much of its cherished wildlife face extinction due to the release of non-native, invasive species. Most of which (Burmese python, tegu, so on) are a direct result of the pet trade industry. Not to mention the Oscar, African & South American cichlids that can be commonly found in any freshwater lake or pond in FL, displacing native species. The cane toad is another ecological disaster that was brought upon by the agricultural industry in failed attempt at organic, biological, pest control. Florida can no longer afford to just do nothing or there won't be a single Everglades, wetlands, or subtropical, native species left within our lifetimes. Granted due to no fault of their own & because pet owners cannot be trusted it's the breeders & pet shop owners that will suffer.
@tanknicians8839
@tanknicians8839 Жыл бұрын
Their is more nuance to be considered here. Python introduction was the result of a hurricane. This was tragic but after the hurricane FWC worked with keepers to create protocols to prevent this from happening again. The cherished wildlife that faces extinction is primarily due to development. We have fundamentally altered the environment in Florida and have paved over immense swaths of habitat. Less than 3% of Miami pine rocklands remain and they are small disjunct parcels of land. I would really like to see data on nonnative freshwater fish in less degraded habitats. I imagine with most of them they stick to canals and unnatural lakes as opposed to pristine habitat. (Similar to iguanas which you almost never see in healthy habitat) most of the released freshwater fish were escapes from aquaculture farms and again FWC worked with the industry to create bio security measures to prevent that from happening. There is also a lot of good the industry and hobby does, which is ignored in this type of analysis.
@tanknicians8839
@tanknicians8839 Жыл бұрын
It is also generally very difficult for a single fish or small group of fish to establish, introductions typically need a robust gene pool and a large enough population size. There are some few exceptions to this rule and that is what should be focused on with a black list in our opinion.
@coreymelanson6729
@coreymelanson6729 Жыл бұрын
@@tanknicians8839 It always seemed rather odd or convenient to blame the presence of a widespread, non-native, invasive species, which also happens to be the most popular snake in the pet trade, on one guy in one location. It's not logical to assume every Burmese python in FL originated from one captive breeding location. It was thousands of irresponsible pet owners over decades. Just like the black & white tegu didn't originate from some pet shop destroyed in a hurricane nor Oscar, nor the armored catfish. It is a direct result of the pet trade & its not even worth debating otherwise.
@tanknicians8839
@tanknicians8839 Жыл бұрын
@@coreymelanson6729 maybe, but I think if you look into invasive species biology and species introduction biology a little deeper you might come to the conclusion that it’s more likely that they started from one massive point source introduction. We also have genetic data on the existing population you can search for which I believe point to that conclusion as well.

This not only affects the aquarium industry, but also zoos, wildlife refuges, etc. Keep in mind that this is government overreach. @@michelrood2966 it’s possible if a white list is implemented then stores couldn’t sell anything not on the white list. So they’ve done something like this before with snakes and yes they went into peoples homes and killed snakes. Eventually keeping anything not on the white list would be illegal unless grandfathered in and require a special permit. A white list would mean LFS could only sell fish native to Florida which would kill 99 % of LFS. But again it’s a work In project and FWS isn’t releasing a info to us.

Same with legality, things are supposed to be legal unless expressly forbidden. This flips it to the default being illegal. You cannot tell me the environmental impact of a fish thats never been studied or conversely only theoretically is a problem but has never actualized an issue. I also take offense to your accusations against humans. Change isn't inherent bad, the real question is why are scientists obsessed with maintaining a fictional earth without humans? Thats like saying beavers are bad because they shape their environment but your basis being the land pre beaver and just assuming any alteration is bad. Its not. Mihht be bad for a specific species but before you humanity hating gaia worshiping Satanists got involved it was becoming a paradise. Plenty of water, food, energy, commercial species running out trash fish, pests at an all time low. Do me a favor, if you hate humanity so much and love your goddess gaia so, unalive yourself first

So many freshwater fish farms breeding fish...this sucks. Can't imagine paying $20 for a neon tetra.

First off quite blaming the pet owners. The same storms that destroyed the reptile holding facilities destroyed commercial fish farms. Birds carry eggs, fry to other bodies of water. The blame should be put on those in charge of regulating those farms.

You have to admit invasive species have really taken over. If people keeping fish and reptiles were more responsible, this wouldn't have happened. At least you have an endless supply of tropicals you can fish for in every southern body of water.

Floridians you are welcome here in California. Dont live your life with so many restrictions and dont let your state government dictate how to live your life. What you can and cannot have. When it is legal to other state.

This is mainly due to the carelessness and selfishness of some fish keepers. Released animals become invasive and endanger the local fauna. The pleco invasion is a good example.

Blame Wal-Mart for a lot of them when they lost their license to sell live pets and all those fish from all over the USA were sent back to the main store in Florida and they dumped them in their ponds and the first hurricane and flood voila now their all over there !

You cannot collect corals in Florida anyway, except for gorgonians. So the coral companies will not be affected much there.

This isn’t about collecting it’s about importing and keeping. So for example we couldn’t keep a yellow tang or any coral for fear it could survive in Florida. Just like they did with banning certain reptiles.

1:44 - It's not difficult actually, they'll simply use AI, hook up wireless cameras which are connected to a powerful AI database to every tank in the shop for the morning, then go for lunch and come back later to the shop and viola, advanced computer software and hardware helped identified thousands of fish in matter of 30 mins or so. It's already being done for research.

How can you ban corals when 70% of the hobby is preservation. If these species are in danger you should be working with the people of the hobby to re-establish the population? This is so terrible, id love to have a word with the person who made the executive decision to do this. I understand taking from wildlife but to be sustainable and to cultivate population is as equally important as the taking aspect and i disagree with the majority of this ban .

Are you not being a little dramatic re hobbyists mass releasing their livestock into waterways? They are hardly going to make the legislation retrospective. It will have big implications for the trade but not for customers who have already purchased livestock. Or am I wrong?

Look into how FWC handled recently the transition from conditional to prohibited for a handful of species (green iguana, Burmese python, tegu , retic , etc). Now imagine they have the same directive but for the enforcement of potentially 10s of thousands of species and I don’t think it’s all that hyperbolic.

@@tanknicians8839 That's what I'm asking. So they are that dumb! Makes no sense. But that's the public service the world over. I could see their point if they were to stop future imports. But expecting existing owners to get rid of their collections is asking for trouble. The cure will be as bad as the disease.

It’s still early in the rulemaking process so a lot of this is speculation as to how it would be implemented. But from what we know it is very concerning. For a recent example look into what happened with Chris Coffee and his animals.
