Emergency on the farm with Mabel the baby donkey rescued from slaughter Ep. 42

2023 is starting out with all kinds of adventures! First, a stray dog shows up on the farm and we take him in and next we are having an emergency situation with Mabel the baby donkey rescued from slaughter just about a year ago. If you don't know Mabels story check out her video below.

SO...Friday night Kara was over visiting, helping me make goat milk soap and everything was fine with Mabel. We were in the pasture playing with her and giving her lots of pets. I woke up Saturday morning to feed everyone and walked into the pasture to see an emergency situation with Mabel. Her eye was completely red and swollen to the point we didn't know if her eye was still intact. I called the vet and they advised me it could be ruptured and we needed to get her in as soon as possible. We had no idea what happened durning the night but this video is an update on Mabels vet exam and prognosis.
I mentioned in this video too, that we are taking Anna the rescued draft horse to the vet to have her leg checked because she still isn't putting weight on it. I will get an update video out as soon as possible because I know many of you have following Anna's story from the beginning.

Poor Mabel, she was doing so good at the doctors! Everything can happen with the animals….So glad she was healing so fast! She is lucky you are treating all of the animals however necessary and caring for them so well! Hope she will be healing fully very quickly. Keeping my thumbs crossed for Anna‘s doctor‘s visit. That’s so true that anything can happen with these animals. I feel some days like wrapping them in bubble wrap so they don’t get hurt 🤣 I hate seeing them when they are in pain. It breaks my heart. Thank you again for watching. We appreciate your support

I’m so glad Mabel is healing well! Time to do halter training and leading practice now! It should be fun to go on some walks together. I’ve owned donkeys and have walked hundreds of miles with some of them on pack trips.

Yes! We need to do lead rope training with her. Is there a halter you would recommend for her?

@@FletcherFarmsAmarillo we have used smaller rope halters, they tie at the poll….they “custom fit” the young ones as they are growing. Most feed stores have them but you might have to order a smaller size. Warwick Schiller and ConnectionTraining on YT have good halter training videos if you are looking. 😊

Oh my, it doesn’t seem that long ago she was rescued!

They were rescued in January last year and were delivered to our farm on February 5th. Time is just flying by!

hello, the lame mare is still limping very badlly , she is certainly in pain. is it possible to x-ray the hoof ? would a hoof shoeing ( iron ) be better ?

That’s Cami…she has a pastern joint issue. A shoe won’t help but she has an appointment on Monday for a steroid injection into the joint. It’s not a complete fix but it does help her move around a lot better. She goes for an injection every 6 months but couldn’t have one when she was due because she coliced. The vet wanted to make sure she wasn’t going to colic again before doing another shot.

@@FletcherFarmsAmarillo thank you ❤🧡💚 . if i understand it correctly it could be like my mare ISABO hoof joint arthrosis ??? she got hyaluronsäre into the joint serveal times. from farrier she got closed irons with special soft insert. still today , she is now 30 years old and runs on smooth sand soil very goog. good time for CAMI and Donkey.

The vet thought it was an impact hit from a horse kicking her or maybe even Jack sitting her with the jolly ball? But the meds they gave us took care of it in about 2 days.
