I have a BC Rich Jr. V 7 string with a Nazgul in it, very very impressive pickup. It can stand up to an active EMG all day. I'd even go as far as saying I like it better than the 81, and I'm usually always an EMG dude. Chugs, chunks, leads, pinch harmonics, trills, cleans, etc. this pickup does everything you'd want it to do. I love it!

EMG for me, has more chime, clarity and a fuller sound in general. The riff @ 1:43 sounded better with the Nazgul but then the next clean riff was better with the EMG IMO. I have passive loaded guitars which sound great but I'll always prefer EMG's I think. But lets face it it, the ONLY true option is to buy more guitars and have both! Don't even try to deny it, you know I speak the truth.

The EMG has a very warm sound. The Nazgul seems to have those low frequencies scooped a bit for more attack and clarity.I was very impressed with how the nazgul played on a clean channel. Both seem to work depending on the situation but i feel like the nazgul has more dynamic response and is just an all around great pickup. Just to clear something up , an "active mount" pickup does not mean that the pickup is active and runs on battery. It means that the pickup is shaped to fit an active pickup routing routing for an EMG, Blackout, etc. The Pegasus, Nazghul, and Sentient, are all passives. Pickups.

With distortion the Nazgul has far more depth and character to its tone than the EMG-so already miles ahead. But then when it's clean time, the Nazgul pretty much just stabs the EMG in the face with a wraith blade and commands a whole army of orcs to violate the wound. No comparison. +Mike Stamper: I'm deeply interested in seeing the Nazgul pitted against the Lace Drop n Gains, which are supposedly fantastic for downtuned aggressive music. As your pickup videos are far and away the best I've ever seen, I'd be blown away if you could orchestrate that demo for us.
@mikestamper9 жыл бұрын

@crustophiles9 жыл бұрын
+Mike Stamper If I send you one, how quickly could you have a comparison video up?
@mikestamper9 жыл бұрын
+Peter Chordas As soon as I get any new pickup on my hands a new video is born! But, until now, in case of passive pickups comparisons I've used different guitars because I don't have a fast replacement system for passive pickups yet (like Seymour Duncan Liberator, for example). When I get one of these (which will happen soon) we can talk about that!! Thank you so much for your predisposition to send me your pickup, and for your trust on my work! :)
@crustophiles9 жыл бұрын
+Mike Stamper Of course. Glad to support good work when I see it. I also deeply appreciate your balanced and consistent approach to pickup comparisons. Too many videos toss a pickup in with drums and/or bass where it's difficult to hear the true character of the pickup itself. I understand that the idea is to give a sense of how it will come across in a mix, but not only will my guitar probably sound different that theirs, chances are my mix will too. Thus the inclusion of other sonic elements in the demonstration only adds more unknown variables, making the decision harder. Most of the demos for the Drop n Gains are poor quality, use a mix (as mentioned above), and feature sludge/doom type stuff which is different than what I have in mind. The Nazgul/Sentient demos tend to be high quality, but also generally use a mix, and focus on djent type one-string-per-song numetal which I also don't play. I play melodic crustpunk on a baritone Les Paul tuned to drop A with a .74 low string, which makes the pickup decision process more challenging since I have to think about how a particular pickup will sound when assaulted by huge chords on gigantic strings at low tunings. At this point it's come down to the Nazgul/Sentient or the Drop n Gains, but I'm not sure which way to go. Anyway, let me know when you're up to make that video.
@mikestamper9 жыл бұрын
+Peter Chordas I'll let you know then, Peter! I promise! :) The main objective of these videos, as you said, was to represent each pickup sound in a simple way, with no additions like drums, bass, EQ or whatever. Some people asked me to use a single track per guitar to empower this point, but I guess I prefered this format, as it could be useful to have a little idea of a stereo mix and doesn't really affect your "perception" of the pickup. It's a pleasure to know that these videos are somehow useful to make pickup choices, as we all once needed to clear some doubts about these matters. Thank you so much again for your comment! We'll be in touch!

depends on if the amp is a hi gain amp or not. On my Mesa Recto the Seymour Duncan JB has just the right amount of gain, anything more results in a slight loss of tone somewhat. On my solid state Fender Champion 100, the higher gain pickups are better. And of course that's just my own opinion based on my tests. Really hard to tell through compressed files then through my phone's speaker, lol.

I loved the Seymour Duncan JB in my Jackson SL1 and the passives in my PRS, but lately I've started to appreciate the EMG 81-7s for recording purposes. WIth Neural DSP modelling they are a lot more versatile than I used to think actives were. The lack of noise and how nicely they cut through a mix is a big plus.

@@WildChildMcCloud compared to the Nazgul and even duncan distortions, the emg are darker 100%. The EQ chart has the Nazguls rated 9 for mids 10 for treble. Would running both pickup's be the best set up & if it is would the active pickup work the best at the neck while the humbucker is close to the bridge? What brand of pickup's are worth their cost? Also! I noticed that nobody's build that I've seen has a decent wire harness instead of sloppy wires dangling all over. A few pairs of bullet connectors, a crimping tool, a heat gun or Bic lighter & some heat shrink would greatly simplify part swaps & repairs.

+Mike Stamper +1, They are both really nice in their own ways, but good at the same things, one person might like emg's while the other one might like seymour duncans. Atm i only use EMG's, but its my second guitar and haven't ever used duncans, but honestly now that i hear them, they sound better (in my opinion).

What riff are you playing at 1:24? It sounds really good, is it from a song or just an improvisation?

Subtle differences in the gains but WOW the cleans are way nicer on the Dunkeroos. Not surprising but it’s crazy to hear it back-to-back.
