another thing about Petra is that her colorful and weird clothes, bright makeup, and lousy pronunciation of words are treated as tasteless and uncultural. While if Emily does all those things, she is still stylish, chic, and quirky. The showrunner has recently commented on the Petra debacle. He apologised, but was SO CLUELESS as to why this was wrong… He said it was "bad timing" due to the war (NO, it was bad regardless of the war), and then explained that "they didn’t even plan Petra to be specifically Ukrainian - it could be anyone from that region: Russian, Romanian, whatever." Sooo basically: "We didn’t mean to be racist towards Ukrainians. We meant to be racist towards the whole region. We don’t even care whether or not they’re all the same thing".

The fact that Emily thinks the "solution" to Camille's problems is to try and set her back up with the boyfriend who will cheat on her with apparently the literal first woman he sees is wild. Not only did she sleep with him, but she thinks she's got some magic power and that if it weren't any other vaguely pretty woman he wouldn't have also cheated is wild. Like, your friend dodged a bullet by leaving him. Set her up with a guy whose genuinely not a dick or help her realize her value as a person is not reliant on some dude. Don't try and set her up with the boyfriend you know will cheat on her. And stop sleeping with the guy holy shit.

The bit about her having sex with a under-aged guy is actually familiar. Because Friends did that, back in 1995, in the episode "The one with the Ick Factor", in which Monica who is 26 in the show sleeps with a boy who is 17. He did lie about his age, but she did the same. And still I think they managed to do it better there, despite the writers of this show living 25 years in the future in a far more progressive time. For the record, just don't lie about your age in a sexual context. If you're too young or old for a person, lying doesn't change that and trying to circumvent that issue is just gonna turn out bad for all parties.

So they got tired of being xenophobic towards French people and holding up dumb French stereotypes so they wrote in Alfie to be a "All of England is xenophobic and hate the French" stereotype and Petra to be "All of Eastern Europe are crazy eccentrics who do crime" as her stereotype. Even Emily is the "Americans are annoying tourists who make everyone uncomfortable by basically demanding other cultures change to accommodate them" stereotype. The writers are lazy and racist. They just go with "What negative stereotypes do we know about this culture" and call that combination a character.

That's a real pity about the Ukrainian character, because the concept of an entire episode dedicated to Emily and another foreigner exploring Paris and trying to communicate in French could actually be super rich. Like they could bond over how out-of-place they feel, learn more about each other's separate cultures, Emily could have a breakthrough in speaking French - it could have been a really sweet and poignant episode that genuinely developed Emily's character. as a frenchie who moved in Québec Canada and manages to have language barrier issues with english and even with ppl speaking Qc french, I'd love to see Emily struggling to pass immigration, open her first bank account with a teller who barely know three words of english, struggle looking for the English language option on websites until she realizes that here we use the UK flag for it instead of the US's. You know, concrete examples of the life of a migrant in a country with a different language. Freak out as her fob contract arrives to its end because she thinks she'll be homeless and lose her healthcare, till she realises that things are really different here.... Then you can have fun with little realisations, like how you can go visit countries around the EU with no customs nor border check, how the price you see is what you pay. Thate there are couple more cheeses than "blue" or "mozzarella", that "mozzarella" isn't the plastic brick she grew up with, ... But no, all we got is an bad rom-com that happens to have some frenchi landscape.

I completely agree with everything you said. Also going back to what you said in the first video about Sylvie being annoyed because she expected the boss who speaks French and is educated… and the boss arrived and it was absolutely horrendous. She didn’t speak French well at all and then disrespected the French constantly. They did not even do that right. I also have to add that I really dislike what they did with the Alfie character. They added in a negative stereotypical British character to make her look better. They portray him as an ignorant, stubborn guy who refuses to adapt to change, calls everything a pub and acts “British”. I really hate how they decided to just throw in him and the Petra character as more negatively stereotypical characters to make Emily look better and that she’s “trying”. As a Brit who has lived in three other countries besides the UK, it’s this type of attitude I really hate to see. I originally thought the premise was good, it might show accurately what a struggle it is to live abroad because of the language and cultural barriers and how you really have to learn about them and respect them to truly feel a part of the country but no, they just reduce every single character in the show down to a stereotype for comedy and to make the US way/ Emily better. I’m sincerely hoping that season 3 will be okay… but at this point, I think it’s wrong to hope.

Creating such a double standard with no justifications can only lead some to justify other forms of pedophilia and sexual assault. The whole backlash over Petra is deserved. Eastern Europeans are having enough with their portrayal in American shows...from Serbs and Russians being terrorists to the rest of the Slavic nations being portrayed as stealers and gangsters, or when it comes to women - whores and just blatantly stupid. The amount of xenophobia we, as Eastern Europeans go through in Western Europe is disgusting and is often overlooked because it is seen as a normal thing. For instance, I am from Croatia, when I came to the Netherlands I was called a "bear head" in the bar, it was weird and humiliating. And why do they call us like that? Demonstration of a Ukrainian woman in the series offended and rooted a lot of people in my country. It was soy sed for me, because l true to learn four languages and it scares me, can people outside my country see me like that? National stereotypes are bad, they scare, because no matter how hard you try, you are still seen as a typical Petra or a trophy wife. I am scared because I am preparing to receive an education in a foreign country. I am afraid that I will be seen only as a national stereotype. I understand that no one represents you better than you yourself, and therefore I draw comics with Ukrainian characters, and try to write good stories, in the hope that people will be able to see not only national stereotypes.I worked on my comic for a long time and on the fact that people outside my camp could read it, so if you want to see a story from a Ukrainian from a Ukrainian, check out my comic @elaisamisstry

Their portrayal of Ukrainian women is so offensive but its also the fact that it was completely unnecessary to the plot of the show, some ignorant writer who definitely doesn't actually know any Ukrainians probably thought they were hilarious and didn't think about the how a reductive stereotype actually hurts real people. Any corrections made in season 2 were clearly about getting people to shut up rather than doing the work to become less ignorant. Good luck studying in a foreign country, I myself am an immigrant and know about being subjected to rude assumptions and mistreatment by ignorant people because of having a different background so I hope you can have a positive experience in another country. Dear Friendly Space Ninja, thank you for your Emily in Paris videos! Even though I consider myself a critical viewer of shows and movies (as I am a writer myself), I really had a different angle of understanding this show, so I am very glad that you opened my eyes to the truth. I actually thought that this show was SUPPOSED to be dumb and that Emily was SUPPOSED to be an awful, ignorant and obnoxious American coming to Europe. I actually think that Emily is the perfect American stereotype, a loud, shallow, ignorant person who feels entitled to everything for no reason. Mabye I am too optimistic, but I really did think that this was Hollywood's/Netflix's way of being progressive and trying to depict Americans in a bad light to circumvent the over glorification of so many Hollywood productions that basically are American propaganda projects where Europeans are depicted badly. So, what I am trying to say is that I actually thought this was supposed to be a parody of American views towards Europe, but after watching your videos, I realise that I was VERY wrong! So, thanks a lot. Also, I don't use social media at all, therefore did not know about the massive backlash the show had gotten. Thank you for making me aware!

My solution to the shoplifting girl storyline: Make her American as well. Make her and Emily bond over being from the USA but decide to speak to each other in French in order to practice. Eventually have the whole shoplifting deal and have Emily call her out, to which the other girl would be like "Come on, it's not a big deal" in English. Emily then snaps to her in French before returning the clothes. After all the character was there just to contrast with Emily and make the audience think "Oh Emily isn't so bad", might as well have gone the full way and made her a real "nega-Emily"

So sorry you had to deal with this. Some people in the uk are so stereotypical and it’s honestly disgusting.

Even those of us born in these countries, slavic women aren't treated much better. All people need is a slavic name or face to be hateful.

The thing is, I was actually enjoying Emily and Petra's day out on the town, when they were bonding over their mutual bad French. And then it took that offensive left turn into shoplifting territory and all the wholesomeness was gone. Also, I know Alfie was just a course-correction character, but I actually felt for him: it made sense that he didn't want to engage in Paris society in any meaningful way when he had been sent there against his will, and he was lonely and maybe a little depressed living as a single guy in a foreign city where he didn't speak the language. There were so many opportunities the show had to go deeper and give meaningful and layered backstories (and stories) to characters, but they just...didn't.

It’s a Darren star show, not a realistic portrayal of the life of someone like Emily.

The worst thing about the whole Petra thing is that it was just a way for the writers to get Emily to sit next to Alfie. Like literally that's it. It wasn't funny nor was it informative. It was useless filler that offended a group of people for no reason. Now if I could rewrite the scene, I would have Emily and Petra go out shopping normally. They walk through the doors carrying their bags of clothes and then the alarms go off. The security guard comes over to inspect both women and when he senses that Petra and Emily are foreign and unable to communicate well in French he becomes hostile, especially towards Petra. By doing this the writers can show the racism and prejudice that Eastern European women face due to negative stereotypes. Emily now sees how hard of a time Petra is getting from the guard and why its important for her to take her French lessons more seriously.

I feel like Petra isn't even just a harmful stereotype of Ukrainian women, but of Eastern European women in general. Because yes, in a lot of Europe this is the (ridiculous and harmful) stereotype for Eastern European women. I bet the writers just threw a dart at a map to pick a more specific country. The only thing they could add to make it worse is to make her a mail order bride.

Honestly: the moment I saw her I said "wanna bet that she's supposed to be bad" I hate it but because it's Emily in Paris you know they are going to do that and I wished they didn't. And indeed, it's not just Ukrainian women, but Eastern Europe. They shouldn't have done it and honestly, why didn't other actors say something? It's not like they are going to fire Lily Collins of the show where she's the main lead..... I know it's not her job, but still

Yes, if female character in tv-series or movie from East Europe/Russia then she would be prostitute, bride looking for a better living or low paid employe who steals or acts dumb. I feel like some part of americans pretty xenophobic, Emily in Paris just another example of often used cliche.
