She is from Port Perry... it isn't like it is that cold there.. It's Southern Ontario. People in Southern Ontario think it is cold when it is warm. When I first moved to Southern Ontario, it was January it was like 1 degree and my brother and I in grade school were taking our jackets off during recess because we were dressed in our winter coats... we didn't have southern Ontario winter coats. We got in trouble. In High School I was still going to school in a Short Sleeve shirt in late November. I actually got called to the principals office with guidance councilors asking if everything was ok at home and do I need someone to donate a winter coat. No I walk home after school and it is like 10 degrees I'm not wearing a heavy winter coats and carting it around... I was actually forced to sweat to make others feel comfortable because people in Southern Ontario don't understand cold. :P Port Perry is further south than most of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and part of UpState New York. It is south of much of the Northern US States. It is about as north as Eugene, Oregon. It is rural so the rest sounds fairly normal :)

Canadians don't do as much of that. Though some do. As kids we definitely all rode bikes in the colder spring and autumn months, but, except in cities where the roads are better maintained, not many Canadians ride at all once the snow comes. Maybe it's the prevalence of freezing rain and sleet. Or maybe we're spoiled by those warm summer days, so we just wait for them to come back, lol. In fact, in cities like Toronto, you'll see a lot of people who just hunker down and wait for winter to be over. In areas like Ottawa or Montreal, and rural places, people enjoy a lot more winter sports. Except hockey. Almost ALL the men play hockey, whatever their location (but not many women, it's very popular so men are sometimes protective of it, here).

I'm just hoping that when summer gets here, it falls on a weekend. That would be great after this crappy April we've had.

Cecclia M I'm from Saskatchewan and I've seen people riding bikes at 20 below zero. However the first thing I think is the guy got a DUI.

@@ceceliam9014 It's probably like late fall or early spring. Kids are always itching to get on the bikes once the snow melts or ride right up until the first lingering snowfall, and then reluctantly put away the bikes.

My dad used to tap the 3 big maples in our suburban yard. It had to be stirred a lot, or it would form a dome and explode. Which it did one year, straight up, to the ceiling! The next year, it was made in the garage.

I have a pot of sap boiling right now. Also, small town? She's from Port Perry, isn't she? I'm a few hours up the road. That place is four times the size of my town.

Sean Sopata it's all relative. I live in a town in Ontario with a population of over 190,000 and an area of 139 km^2. Port Perry has a population of around 9,500 and a population density of 346 persons/km^2, so their area is around only 27 km^2.

I've been to Port Perry many times. ** edit to add ** Holy crap I just realized who she is! Her father owns the feed store in Port Perry and I was the on site tech support worker for the custom software he bought from the company I worked for. Honestly her older sister is the real beauty of the family. I once told her father that she was really someone special. And he replied saying, ya but the paparazzi are a problem. I thought he was nuts. I had no idea her sister was an actress. He just assumed I was talking about Emily! But no, her older sister was the one I was talking about. That was 13 years ago.

I'm Canadian and my gf at the times father ran the cities tourist maple syrup center. We'd give tours on horses and buggies and show people how it's made in the middle of winter. I helped out working in the "Sugar Shack" where we sold freshly made maple syrup from the farm and maple syrup candies shaped like maple leaves. Oh the good ol' days.

If you haven't tried actual 100% real maple syrup you have no idea what you're missing. I gave some to my Latino friends from Nicaragua and El Salvador...they can't even stomach the Aunt Jemima crap anymore.

Absolutely! It's a shame that so many people have never tasted the real thing - which is a real gourmet food. Even many pancake and waffle restaurants don't offer it because it's more expensive than the crappy fake syrups.
