About the 15 year old falling asleep in the courtroom, I had heard the mom tell reporters right after it happened that the mom and girl were homeless at the time (I don't remember where they were staying/sleeping) but that because of that the girl hadn't had a good night sleep in days and that's why she was so tired. The mom was in tears and said she felt so bad about their living situation and said they were doing the best they could. So yeah, the judge was way out of line and you'd think he'd have known better on how to help a child.

He completely broke the law: Showing minors on public social media without parental consent; holding a juvenile faux trial without the protections due a juvenile in court or otherwise; exposing personal information of a juvenile on social media without consent; expecting her to strip her clothing off, likely in the presence of an adult for no legal reason - I'm glad she refused that - smart girl; punishing her for something she wasn't doing on purpose; using excessive force; removing her constitutional rights in multiple areas; I could go on. This judge should be charged with felonies of abuse of a minor, disclosure of her personal information and likeness without consent, wrongful/false imprisonment, denying her constitutional rights, and anything else they can throw at and convict him of. He should lose his law license and removed as a judge not permitted to become one in the future in any USA territory. And I remember she had a sleepless night for a really good reason, but can't remember what that was. At the worst, she should have just been asked to leave the room but ignoring her would have been the best. SUE HIS ASS OFF TOO! Please follow the Judge case. I am a retired teacher. O.M.G., I am so sorry that the student had to go through all of that. He was on a power trip. The lesson he taught this young person and the other students, was what abuse of power looks like. It used to irk me when fellow teachers would rudely waken students who fell asleep in class. I learned early that I know little to nothing of what a student is dealing with outside of school. If this student was just bored and decided to sleep through the presentation, she still did not deserve any of what happened. How fragile is the judge when he perceives this as a lack of respect.

@@North_West1True, but this wasn’t during court. They were essentially using the courtroom as a lecture hall, no different than a school auditorium or a classroom. EDB, you've well-embraced your natural wavy girl! Fantastic volume! e: Live chats in Michigan courts aren't uncommon. I've seen Judge King before, and I always got the impression he stayed far away from interacting. His temperament has occasionally strayed from what I would consider judicial, at times, but these allegations go far beyond that. And that's in context with his associate judge, Judge Bryant, a bit of an icon on KZbin herself, who delivers morning sermons from her own KZbin channel. Judge Bryant draws a hard boundary line between her work as a judge and what she shares on her channel, and I wonder if Judge King lost sight of his own boundary line. Knowing what I know of his personality, I can believe that he felt personally affronted by a student falling asleep. But if he admits to staging his own version of "Scared Straight," he admits that the scenario wasn't judicial in nature. Whether he did it for his own gratification or for the sensationalism of those in the chat, I don't see how immunity would or could apply. Judges often teach at law schools and for law programs. If they're sued because of their conduct as an educator, they can't claim judicial immunity for that. What shocks (and yet doesn't shock) me is that no one else apparently found his behavior, as alleged, troubling. I suppose that could be a defense to the IIED. "It couldn't have been that extreme if no one else thought it was." A potential arguendo.

25+ years ago, my brother was fascinated with all things police. Our friend was a detective and took my brother, one or two friends, and I on a tour of the police station for his 10th birthday. This included locking us in a juvenile holding cell with our parents permission and our consent. We (the kids) were all together and we were let out after about 5 minutes. This case is NOT that! I can't even believe what this teen was subjected too. As Emily was reading the lawsuit I kept wondering where were the teachers/adults in the court room? Did anyone speak up? What was being said in the KZbin chat? Based on the lawsuit, it seems this was "normal" behavior in that court room to the extent that none of the other adults in the room thought about speaking up.
