Eminem was HUUUGE when this came out. The height of his career. Kids after school would rush home to watch TRL just to see his new music video. (There was no KZbin) Compared to others, 2001 Eminem was bigger than 2008 Lil Wayne, or 2011 Drake, or 2017 Migos. He was at the front & center of the rap industry from 2000 to 2003. 💯

Eminem’s lyric has gotten even better as long as he has been in the business and with his age… This man is the g.o.a.t. period.. argue about it,cry about it,but he is period… And people complain he’s too fast or his style has changed…. Dude is dropping lyrical atomic bombs and no even realizes the puns, punch lines and triple innuendos… Eminem is far above any other rapper like he said on the chorus in his song zeus.. I think one reason why he blew up was because he was always 100% real and true to himself. It was a breath of fresh air in comparison to all the fakeness that permeates the industry. He was truly relatable to so many people from all walks of life. And that is something that he has always held on to. He is still humble, even as the best-selling rapper in history. I'm personally tired of all fakeness (just look at whats happening with Diddy), which is why I'm drawn to artists like him, of which there are very few. Anyways, I love your reactions guys, I know im kind of late to the party but I'm glad I found your Eminem reactions.

My favorite Eminem track of all time. The subject matter, the intensity of the tone in the vocal performance, the insane rhyme pattern, the awesome backing instrumental w/ piano (I played piano), sick cadence and flow, and above all else, the powerful, meaningful, razor sharp lyrics (especially referencing kids getting bullied and taking their peers out, and NOW it’s a tragedy because it’s in middle America, when for decades inner city school kids had been dealing with in school violence and no one paid much attention. And the media tries to shift the blame for it onto drugs and controversial artists and their music. BUT WHERE WERE THE PARENTS AT?). Brilliance. Sheer brilliance. A perfect track. It was a brave song to make then, and remains so IMO. And to this day, it still hits as hard and is as fire as the day it dropped. Thanks for doing it. EDIT: the “cocky caucasian” he references is widely believed to be Howard Stern. If you’ve not heard the interview he did with Stern right before The Slim Shady LP dropped and he’d just been signed by Dre, but before he was regarded as an incredible rapper and was still kind of underground, you should give it a listen. It’s cringeworthy. And very apparent that it’s Stern he references in The Way I Am. Eminem did that one interview with him, and Never. Went. Back. In Stern’s most recent book, he sights much regret in how he conducted the interview which resulted in Eminem never returning to the show.

thank you for saying this. he literally was addressing huge issues in america and was trying to use his new found influence to wake people the fuck up.. and i wonder if one of the reasons he turned to drugs was because no one cares. i also wonder what actually changed, because weve all felt this way our entire lives, and no one listens. he is the voice of the rationally angry people.

IMO this video is one of Em's most iconic. People love his Slim Shady videos, but this one to me just hits so hard. Shows all the frustration and drama in his life. Also you hit it on the head. He's a person. And Em wanted to be a rapper to feed his family and have money to get by on. He didn't want to be MEGA famous where he couldn't walk out of his house without being hounded by people. And to this day, he still cannot walk out of his house without being hounded by people, over 20 years later. Because he is THE guy to this day when you think about rap in culture. To me Em was mad at a lot of things. He thought money would fix his problems probably, or at least most of them. Instead it added 100 more problems on his plate it seems like at times. Especially towards the start of his career when he blew up. Plus he's an introvert by all accounts, so it's probably even harder him being in the spotlight that would damn near make anyone break and give up.

She was so respectful to them, signing and taking a picture with whoever had a camera (no cellphones with cameras in the 90's) I for some reason could not move towards her. But the excitement was definitely on my face my friend said. I waved when her eyes went across and mouthed "I love you Janet". She walked over to the little group I was in, and gave us all a hug and autograph. Still framed in my office. I think she was more moved over our respect for space, that led her to coming to us. Boys and girls out there......he is speaking the truth. There is a time and place for admiration and asking for an autograph. You show respect to the artist (As I did) it goes a very long way.

There's a good story behind this song too, I don't remember it all that well though. But it was something like this : The Label wanted him to record another song like "My Name Is" because they thought that it will blow up again like the original. Wanted him to do something "pop-ish" I guess. But he was so pissed off about it and all the controversy that was circling him at that time, that he recorded this song instead. And he wrote it on the way to the studio too I guess. Song go hard AF 🔥

Yea I think also with the part about not coming up to him while he's feeding his daughter was a message to the weird fans but also sort of like a way of him trying to put himself on his fans' levels and put himself in their reality, the way they see the world. Going to a regular diner type restaurant may be seen as an every day thing for an average person whereas most people never see them as doing that. I think he was also speaking for a lot of celebrities, even though Eminem was probably one of the most popular figures in early to the mid 2000's, every celebrity deals with this, he just spoke out about it so bluntly in this song. The other side I think he's trying to paint here is that "Look, im just like you, i go out and eat food like a normal person and have a child who I take care of also, why do you bother me and treat me above you, just let me eat in peace like you would with another normal person." I get the nature of being a celebrity, and he knows by being so popular it's going to happen, but I feel like he's also trying to articulate that with this part of the song also. I think he in a way is trying to relate to his fandom, to the average person because like I mentioned, your average person doesn't ever think of Eminem or any celebrity just going out to random places to eat, its almost unheard of. You immediately go to "well he has a personal chef and he never leaves the house" or that he always goes to 5 star restaurants. This song I feel also heavily resonates with Stan, another of his songs, where he wants people to not put celebrities so high on a pedestal and worship and idolize them and treat them like human beings, and the way Eminem does that in this song while also calling out his weird fans has 2 meanings to it.
