Not so long before this, they went after the industry.Mostly the rock/metal side. Dee Snyder testified in Congress and kind of made them look stupid. That would be a good reaction. The vids are here. It seemed after that they tried the divide and conquer technique. Going after individual artist instead of the industry. Its definitely worth watching, even if you dont react. He went in there, hair, ripped up jeans and looking like…himself. Obviously the last person they expected to be actually intelligent. Hilarious. Theres a few artist, but his specific testimony is awesome…specifically.😂

Back then he was just showing the country's hypocrisy of loving freedom of speech but also trying to take his away. I was young back then but I remember him being on the news and even being called before Congress about "threats" towards the president and government officials. Marshall is all about the freedom to be yourself and showing how flawed the system of this country can be. That's why so many people connected with him, it's not just skin color.

Yea, this is Slim being Slim. This album came out the same year I graduated high-school. The comments he made about both Columbine, and parental responsibilities on this, and his other albums have always resonated. Pointing out blatant hypocrisy like that has always been something that pleases me.

I always took the line about "little eric" jumping off the terrace as a jab at Eric Clapton.
@MaiaraBela2 жыл бұрын
Why would you think that? It's just a name Em uses to refer to a regular (and white) American kid, just because the word 'Eric' is literally contained in the word 'America'. He uses Erica too in White America. (Sorry if you already knew that, I just figured you didn't because of the interpretation you gave)

He was pushing the boundaries of what could be said in a time of massive censorship. The parental advisory sticker came out during this era. Censorship was a huge topic and EM in true Shady fashion pushed back lyrically.

"The subject matter may not specifically be classical Hip-Hop..." Absolutely not, and that's why I fell in love with it when I first heard it, which was in 2011 by the way, I was 17 and that was when I first got an internet connection and was able to get into things that weren't just what was around me. It was the first time I heard somebody rhyming the way he was rhyming and talking about something other than gang banging, drug slinging, pimping, cars, money, women etc. I grew up in Watts, seeing all these things, hearing gun shots every day, I wasn't interested in hearing it in music too, Eminem is the primary reason I listen to any Hip-Hop at all.

The lines about shooting up schools was a response to his name coming up following Columbine. I think it aged fine because the message still applies. It's not the fault of the artist for what some psychopath does who happens to listen to the music.
@bigbearnelson2 жыл бұрын
This record came out in the two or three weeks around my high school graduation. School shootings like Columbine and Paducah, Kentucky weren't monthly occurrences yet and Em's lines about Columbine were pushing the boundaries to the edge. This track is nearly 22 years old and it's only gotten worse.

I’m a 38yr half white/half Cherokee (adopted) woman. Grew up very loved and very privileged. Didn’t matter. Had issues from the jump. Chemical imbalance, at the start of when ADD and ADHD was barely recognized. Was labeled different/trouble bc I took and still take medications for it. That help me effing function at a “normal” level of existence. B/c I started therapy. Bc I was just “more tan” enough to be separate. Before that was labeled as just stupid. By my own teachers. Even though I had a high school reading level, in third grade. When his first album dropped, we were in our mid teens. We. Were. Angry. We were angry with being mollycoddled, we were angry at our government, at the constant wars, 9/11, the passive reactions we asked for, for help. He gave us a voice. All of us. If anything, for me, growing up he united everyone in my generation, yes, millennials, together. If ppl don’t get that he’s making a point being outrageous, then don’t listen to him. And for me, to this day and for forever, will adore him. I love the old Eminem the craziness and collabs, and I love him now. I’ve grown up just as he has. But I can still look back and listen and absolutely adore the songs like these. Because they are statements. And some of my favorites. That I am very much agree with. His music means so much. 💖
