Well Emirates are known for their fantastic quality and experienced pilots. Not to mention, this is called 'Reverse Thrust' when the outer engine cylinders open up and air reverses so that the plane slows down, and with the help of flaps and breaks, it stops quickly :)
@j4cko564 жыл бұрын
Not entirely true. The brakes do most of the work, along with the spoilers. The thrust reverse is simply to take load away from the brakes, so they don't get to hot, they don't really help with slowing down. This was information from a real world 737 pilot, it applies to all aircraft.
@Mohammed-roblox4 жыл бұрын
Lol what did you say? Actually the reverse thrusters are not needed at all but for a safe procedure they are needed they do nothing spoilers flaps and brakes would be enough reverse thrusters were too slow down the wind speed so it won't just skid off overrunning

As a former ATC, I used to watch TAA and Ansett battle it out at Canberra airport (Australia) with both 727s and DC9s. TAA would land first, use minimal braking and taxi off at the end of the runway - very smooth. Ansett would land second, use reverse thrust AND brake harder, turn off sooner and beat TAA to the terminal. Good PR for Ansett. The Emirates plane definitely used only idle-reverse, but used a lot of wheel braking to make the early taxiway - saved some taxi fuel and engine time.

That's pretty impressive. From the threshold to that turnoff is less than 5,000 feet. They made a solid touchdown and came to a reasonable stop in much less than that... The runway of Key West International (EYW) near me is 4,800 feet end to end - the shortest runway in the U.S. served by Delta. 738's are the biggest planes that fly from here. To think that this 777 could theoretically make it here with a good headwind and a few feet to spare is pretty cool. Would be something to see.

You're supposed to reset the reverse thrust and commence manual breaking at 60 kts, yes, but what he did may have been company procedure. Any ways, it seems like it was to vacate the runway ASAP, as he kept the reverse thrust on, until it was safe to turn off.

it really is a beautiful aircraft the 777-300ER. love the length of it
@Aviationlover10013 жыл бұрын
If your thinking it was the wind it's not, some aircraft such as the boeing 777 has a Autobrake system witch the pilot can set to 1, 2, 3, witch higher the number more brakes are applied and RTO witch the pilots set for a rejected take-off for full brakes, I'm guessing that he had them on about 2 to 3, you can tell it was the brakes cuz you can hear them squeak a bit and when he disengaged the reverse thirst the aircraft still stop quick cuz he still had the Autobrake applied.

@kat06sa you use rudders to control the plane down the runway. you don't switch to nosewheel until you are at taxi speed. even at airport with high speed exits, rudders are used to exit to taxiways.

In america the FAA issues LASO or Land and Hold Short operations for different airports that are busy which are located in the AF/D, it just so happens this guy probably excepted a LASO (or an ICAO or European equivalent) and when he realized his landing was less than ideal, he applied some extra breaking to help out the process, getting off at the acceptable LASO taxiway that's my two cents at least...

whoa that's an odd landing right there, as said by your description. I think the pilot applied some serious amount of brakes while reversing the engines. that must've felt awesome onboard
@bhm171213 жыл бұрын
@sas153 Wrong. The engines on the 300ER are GE90-115B. Many UK airports have noise abatement restrictions which do not allow the use of Reverse Thrust unless absolutely necessary (emergency landings, aeroplanes which require almost the maximum LDA etc). I have been on many an aeroplane which has not used reverse thrust when landing even though the aeroplane is equipped. On long runways there is no real need to use them what with the efficiency of modern braking systems.
@khope5513 жыл бұрын
GinoRc: Clarification on your point...... Reverse thrust should be limited to engine idle speeds below approx 60 knots to minimise re-ingestion of exhaust gases and to avoid FOD (Foreign Object Damage) to the engines from debris blown up off the runway.
@ppvpz13 жыл бұрын
Really amazing!!Very short landing!!

@jonny96 I never flew the 777, only airbuses and the occasional 757, the A320 does has an adjusted yaw system I know. We use the ALS or Auto Leveling System if we are landing in a crosswind config. the airbus self corrects the yaw but, If needed can be adjusted by the pilot. And I did mean by slowing the rate of decent not forward motion thanks for correcting me. The last time I heard about Dutch Roll mode was about 8 years ago so I'm kinda rusty....

@lockon01211 жыл бұрын
60 kts is correct, but he is idle reversing at that point, meaning that the reverese thrust is engaged but the engines doesnt deliver any thrust. the 60 kts rule is to prevent debris on the the runway to blow in front of the engine and get sucked in. since idle reverse doesnt produce as much thrust as full reverse, that's not a problem while still rolling
@MrSd40jk13 жыл бұрын
That is an amazing video thank you!!
@kwade195713 жыл бұрын
@empiresvi The reverse thrust on the engines isn't as powerful as the forward thrust because less than 100% of the thrust is reversed, but it is pretty powerful all the same. They make a big difference in stopping distance even if it isn't the full 120K pounds that is available in forward thrust.
@VladdieAndSteffie13 жыл бұрын
@jonny96 I would say you're about right. I fly on Emirates from Dubai all the time and the pilot/co-pilot normally always are Western or South African/Australian.
@ollo198213 жыл бұрын
@volcom1722 the engines wont get damaged because of reverse engaged under 60 kts... look at the DC-9 that uses powerback instead of pushback... C-17 use reversers for powerback... it is very often pilots have reversers engaged under 60 kts...
@AS76813 жыл бұрын
Whoa! That takes some major skill!
@aussiebug197012 жыл бұрын
As I said above, Idle reverse stops the engines making any forward thrust (large jet engines make a significant amount of forward thrust at idle rpm), so idle reverse reduces braking distances some. Full reverse thrust certainly reduces the landing distance significantly but it uses up more engine time (high thrust counts more than idle thrust on the engine clock), and uses more fuel.
@khope5513 жыл бұрын
@livevideocapture : 60 knots is about the benchmark , but its not when to close thats the main issue; its the engine speed that is crucial.

@Venzla2113 жыл бұрын

@FeroX11312 жыл бұрын
It might have been. But it didn't resolve in a slower speed, as the speed of the aircraft is measured in air-speed (how fast the air flows towards the aircraft, into the tubes calculating it). If there is a medium/heavy wind component (as it seems like in the video), the aircraft will have a slower ground-speed, despite the same speed in air-speed :) What made it a short landing for such aircraft, is the combination between the extended use of reverse thrust upon t/d and the head-wind.

i was on a flight to my local international airport last week; Norwich, i have flown into Norwich Int a few times on aircraft such as the Dash 8 and 737 however this was a almost full 757 and i have never felt such a rapid deceleration before, literally as he landed and started braking myself and i think most of the passengers were jolted forward. nice video btw!
