Emirates A380 at Birmingham Airport's 70th anniversary, with landing and take off (Airside in HD)

Emirates put the A380 on their daily midday B'ham UK service on the day the airport celebrated it's 70th birthday and official opening of the new International Pier. This was the first time an A380 has been scheduled into another UK airport other than at Heathrow. The aircraft shown here is registered A6-EDE, it arrived at 12:15 and departed at 15:30. The take off was slightly long as there was a 10KT tailwind, this was so all those gathered around the terminals and Control Tower got a good view of it departing

Far away it looks slow, tiny and not so powerful! Closer and when landed, it looks huge, very powerful and fast! I'm not a massive plane fan but the A380 is a masterpiece!

Actually Emirates has 2 scheduled flights per day into Birmingham every day and has done so for many years - soon likely to be increased further. It is up to Emirates what aircraft they fly on these scheduled flights. On this particular day they flew the A380 and it was a scheduled flight with passengers. Birmingham had the first A380 scheduled flight into a British airport outside Heathrow.

Birmingham is having a runway extension soon so then it can allow fully loaded 747's, 777's, a340's and maybe a fully loaded a380.

The runway length at BHX is not an issue for the A388. As for the B777-300ER - well BHX has been handling 2 per day without issue for years and its passenger loads are very good on the route. So much so that Emirates are soon likely to start a 3rd daily flight with another 777 or upgrade one of the existing flights to an A380.

Fully loaded the A380 use 200 metres shorter distance than the A340-200 and A340-300.. And 200 metres longer distance than the A330-300,and as you say shorter than the 777-300ER.. 450 metres shorter actually :) Takeoff run at MTOW on the A380 is 2750 Metres,and 3200 on the 777-300ER :)

@Aviationnation10 Warm air is less dense than cold air, so for a given ground speed there is a lower airspeed. Take two identical aircraft with identical loads, one in Dubai @ 40degC and one in Glasgow @ 5degC, the one in Dubai will use more runway to reach the same takeoff speed.

Its had fully loded 747's takeoff there in the past. The a380 has a amazing Takeoff / Landing distance airbus were forced in to having at least 2 thrust reversers on there a380 as they wanted none. But i think there has always been confusion and debate with the general Takeoff / Landing distances. Personaly i think the runway extension is there to make it more accsesible to jumbos and strengthn the airports image not so they can typically land there.

Incorrect. The A388 has very good take off performance. It could take off with a full load from BHX safely as it would not require full tanks of fuel to reach DXB - it's about 7 hours flight time between Birmingham and Dubai. (As a comparison Dubai to Sydney or Melbourne is around 14 hours flight time).

Incorrect. Anyway BHX-DXB is not actually a particularly long flight by 777-300ER standards so their fuel load is fairly average. As for the A388 it performs very well on runways significantly shorter than Birminngham's. The real issue with the A388 is having enough clearance to taxi and park without impacting on an airport's operations too much.

To be honest I can't see them upgrading an one to an A380 for a while. The 777's on both 37/39 are 2 class and its very popular mainly in economy without going into to much detail. The A380 only really makes money when the premium classes are full, trying to fill 76 business and 14 first from BHX would be an issue. Plus they have no 2 level Airbridges

Particularly when it comes to 747's and the Airport...which leads me to remembering when Air Force One dropped Clinton off for the G8 summits here in the 90s... How did that happen? I'm pretty sure it went straight back to the US fully laden without any stopovers? Also: Concorde. I know it might be a different animal and sadly gone now (*sob*) but how did that cope with Birmingham Airport?
