as someone working in IT for 20 years I can confirm. "percussive maintainance" is indeed a great solution to a great variety of problems if done by professionals. it mainly fixes the frustration of the it guy but sometimes also fixes the problem ...

Oh? Server? Solution: h a m m e r .

Sometimes it fixes the problem of "The company won't buy a replacement for this piece of critically needed hardware because 'oh the one we have works' or something similarly obviously wrong, when to any professional the answer is 'no the F it doesn't work' ". AKA it can fix the problem of the bean counters having higher priority than IT, because if you break the old insufficient thing so it won't work but you can recover data from it (if needed), then they MUST buy a new thing to get it working, and hey guess what maybe this wouldn't have happened if you had budgeted funds for that upgrade IT has been mentioning in LITERALLY EVERY MEETING for the past 5 years. Angry? No, I'm not angry, what are you talking about? EDIT: Oh and since you're in the IT department, you can probably cause the server room cameras to have "unfortunately" lost the footage of the event. EDIT 2: This tactic is only to be deployed in cases where you have to deal with an obstructive and/or micromanaging person outside of IT that is trying to run IT without having a fucking clue what the job entails because "Oh I build my kid's computers" or something like that (enterprise stuff is totally different than that, ya nonce!). EDIT 3: Even better if you can figure out how to pin the incident on said obstructive or overly micromanaging person. And yes, this is probably how that one post in the vid with all the cut ethernet wires happened.

@@ProtoV33MK1 That sounds like the window motor for that door had managed to get a broken or otherwise bad connection between the commutator of the motor and the windings of the armature. That's an unusual failure, these days it's more likely that the gears in the mechanism will strip out or (in a different style of window motor assembly) the pulleys will have worn out or the cable will have jumped out of place. 20-30 years ago I'd tell you to go take that bad motor to the auto parts store, they might give you the address of one or more shops in town where you could get the motor re-built (that was before they sent all the parts re-manufacturing jobs to China). These days I'd tell you to search the internet to see which vehicles used that same window actuator, and from that you have a list of what vehicles you want to harvest parts from at the junkyard (Hundai Santa Fe is a pretty common vehicle, you should have plenty to choose from). Or you know, you could just get a brand new one on Rock Auto, that works pretty well most of the time but if your vehicle is old enough the only option will be aftermarket parts that might not fit or work quite as well as OEM parts made by the same people that made the vehicle in the first place.

Honestly, as someone who wants to go into IT support work, hearing Lexi explain stuff about this and exactly _why_ it's bad and shouldn't be done is really helpful. It's not just her rambling about tech stuff and how bad the situation is, it's her giving us knowledge we may not have otherwise known. I really do understand why they keep assigning her to read posts from tech subreddits, because the other narrators don't really have the personal background knowledge for it like Lexi does. So much of the time in these videos is spent with her explaining key information and being an educator, even if it isn't always her intention. I'm really grateful for it. 💚 - Nev

Seriously though - worse than that actually happened with me. I was doing a residential job, and the woman said ‘oh while you’re here, could you see if you can get data off my daughter’s computer - her husband took the drive out for you’. Anyway, I did the original job, and asked ‘ok, so where is the hard drive?’. She said ‘It’s on the table where you’ve been working’. Really? I thought… where…? And she shouted over… it’s in the envelope. Oh. Oh, no! Oh yes… For - and I kid you not - in the envelope was a hard disk platter! The husband had carefully extract the HD, opened it up, ripped out the platter and thrown the rest away. I told her ‘if there ever was a chance, there’s none now’. She said her daughter will be most disappointed. I said there are companies that might be able to help, for a few thousand quid. Apparently it had her daughter’s wedding photos on, and when she heard the news she burst out crying. ROFL! It’s cheaper and easier to just remarry

The issue is that there really is never a good time to shut down the servers for maintenance. I have been in situations where we couldn't access meds or charts because the system was down for maintenance.

If you plug your space heater into a power strip, the space heater using lots of electricity, which will cause a heat to build up and melt the casing of the power strip, would eventually lead to an electrical fire. So ALWAYS plug your space heaters into a wall outlet, and if your wall outlets have only 2 holes for 2 prongs, and your space heater requires 3 prongs, to fit in a 3hole outlet, get those things that have 2 prongs but has 3 holes on the end and put them in the wall outlet, then plug your space heater in.

16:40 this reminds me of a laptop we had at church, i volunteered to help with sound for awhile and there was a laptop we got to control all the lights with, like the second time we used it someone closed the laptop and the program crashed and deleted everything so they had to completly set up the lights again, now they just have a note taped to it saying "do not close!" also for that last one, my dad also works with computers and always had stuff like that around, me and my brother not realizing it could easily ruin it played with those as kids

As a guy working in tech myself (technical support and developer support for a software company) hearing Lexi's rants is beautiful. As a guy working in tech myself, having to watch these clips makes me want to cry. the reason writers like really old computers is because they're free from a bunch of modern crap that gets in their way. Like if you made a computer that was just a typewriter that went to a harddrive instead of paper they'd goddamn love that.

The thing about the Temp folder, that was actually a common issue in Windows 7. The Temp folder should automatically be emptied when Windows shuts down, but for some reason that didn't always happen. One of our customers had this issue. There were several employees that called frequently because their C-drives were full and it was always the Temp folder. Haven't seen that happen with any later Windows version tho, so it seems MS fixed it.
@toast11672 жыл бұрын
so in windows 10 is it safe to completely clear all the temp files?
@raenfox2 жыл бұрын
@@toast1167 The files I'm referring to and that usually caused this issue are located in the %Temp% directory (hit Windows+R and enter %temp%. This leads you to the Temp directory hidden in your User folder). Deleting those is perfectly safe. If any of them are still needed, Windows will tell you that they're in use.
@TheSeanUhTron2 жыл бұрын
12:50 - That's actually really common during network upgrades. The techs will just cut the cables instead of trying to unplug 100+ network cables. The cables are being replaced anyways so it doesn't matter.

I've never laughed so hard when I saw the "Hard Reset" tool!?!?! One company I worked for starting in 2012 had a rat's nest of cables like the ones shown. My boss had just taken over as manager so he had us come in with him on this one weekend. He would pull the cables and tell one of us it went from this port to this port, and we'd jot it down. Once he had one patch panel cleared, another person would come back and start rerunning the cables, with the correct length, and actually use the cable routing paths above and below the patch panel. Took us all weekend to clean up, but he bought us food and let us listen to football games while we did it.

Lexi actually defending some of the server cabling makes the rest of the video even funnier because the fact that she does get angry at some of the other ones paints just how bad they are
@TehKazlehoff2 жыл бұрын
13:02 Generally this isnt a case of sabotage. when a server rack is being decommisioned and not replaced (ie: moving to cloud) for some companies its actually cheaper to cut the ethernet cables and sell as-is rather than have someone unplug the cables. no, really, this is apparantly a thing.
@militialpickle93042 жыл бұрын
So I do know that Google Chrome stores A LOT in the temp folder. Other than that, I can think of things like different passwords that were saved, cookies, as well as certain other applications like Steam, Origin, and even Netflix that store temp data as well. As for the video, gotta love Lexitalk. As a tech nerd myself, it's a joy to hear others talk about the same things and be loved for it.

Fun tech fact: some Asus laptops (and maybe other brands, not sure if it’s an Asus thing or a Windows thing) have a setting where you can “silence” the fan Basically it will keep the fan from going above a certain speed so it doesn’t sound like a plane taking off I do not recommend using this feature

7:43 - I work in a print shop in a retail store. This is why the employees put the paper in the $45k printer/copiers in self service and no you can't use your own paper because you can't be trusted. Had a guy trying to PRINT FRAUDULENT CHECKS and his paper kept jamming in the printer because it was well... not an approved paper. The toner thing also gives me some ptsd from a Yellow cartage exploding. Yellow is a finer particle compared to C M and K so we are still finding it 5 months later.
