About English as a second language. I know that for physical things "on" is "on top" and "in" is "inside" but for abstract things I have no idea. It's almost the same way anglophones simply don't know how to handle gendered languages when not referring to people.

And you don't bake a pie "on" the oven, you bake it "in" the oven. But that's more of the most basic use of the words. They're kind of the reverse of each other, if that helps a bit. So: You are dressed "in" clothes. You have clothing "on" your body. To be "in" is to be encased or surrounded. To be "on" is to be in direct contact and/or supported by something. --Attempted advice from English Lit major, not a linguistic by any stretch of the imagination lol
