In Japan its not uncommon for a parent to send their young child on an errand. Its something simple like delivering a lunch or picking up a small amount of groceries. It teaches them to rely on the community. The article is probably using click bait to make it seem worse then it is. Its the American equivalent of sending your kids down the street to borrow a cup of sugar

To be fair, I haven't heard of people in America sending their kids down the street to borrow a cup of sugar in like, 40 years.

In America, even that would anger the "think of the children!" crowd
@axelprino2 жыл бұрын
This implies that in the US parents never send their kids to buy something at the corner store (or I guess convenience store for Asia), and that deeply confuses me.
@klikkolee2 жыл бұрын
@@axelprino In a lot of the US, just that would be considered irresponsible! In fairness though: a trip to the store in the US would either be a 4 hour walk along an 80kmph road or a 30 minute walk through the city, and even in the city, the US does not have infrastructure that is very safe for pedestrians.

okay but the Japanese show about the little kids is actually really cute tho. it’s called Old Enough and you end up learning about their culture a bit more. japan is a lot safer than most countries and children over there are taught at a really young age that they can trust members of their community if they ever need help. also even though some of the kids cry about it at first, most end up accomplishing their task even if it takes a second try.
@KyrieChii2 жыл бұрын
I just hope that most people who live elsewhere don't see that & think it's a good idea to try it... Sadly in most places, the odds of the child not returning would be disturbingly high. 😕 Some creep tried to snatch me from a department store when I was 5. I was incredibly fortunate that he didn't seem very 'experienced', panicked & ran for it.
@katarahenderson65292 жыл бұрын
@@KyrieChii I'm sorry to hear that, glad you're here though. The Japanese show about kids going on errands is perfectly fine, they're taught from a young age what to do not to get run over by a car and are going through safe neighbourhoods in broad daylight. Plus you know there's like 10 people with cameras filming from various angles and ready to jump in at the slightest sign of trouble.

IIRC, in Japan that is a thing. Usually, it's like...go to the store and buy milk. I think it's supposed to build trust in the kids that if something happens, they can rely on those around them. Because, you know, Japan is a very community-centered society.

Yup. People over there tend to be polite and unselfish. Historically, it wasn't always that way, but after the fall of Imperial Japan, a drastic cultural shift took place. Imperial Japan heavily emphasized pride and greed, and the survivors largely look back on that time in Japan's history with regret and embarrassment. The survivors decided that the best way to prevent another cascade into those same pitfalls that caused their ancestors' empire was to go the complete opposite direction, hardcore. Because of that, politeness and generosity are paramount to the point that some companies have to hire non-Japanese people just to voice dissent in company matters.
@jeanremi83842 жыл бұрын

That japanese show is actually about a japanese cultural phenomenon called "first errand". Because japan is a collectivist culture, its important for people to know from a young age that they can depend on other people and ask them for help, and also to know that theyre expected to do these things themselves. So when their parents think theyre old enough, theyll send them to do a small thing like go to the grocery store a couple blocks away to get milk, or bring someones lunch to a nearby place. Because this is a thing a lot of people go through, people know to look out for kids on their first errands and do their best to help them, and the kids are usually not sent very far away. The kids are also usually taught how to be safe while running the errand. If the kid isnt old enough to understand, then theyre not old enough to run the errand I def think some of the kids on the show are a little too young to be running errands, but i also wonder if the fact that the parents know theyre going to be watched (by the camera crew) influences their decision on whether or not its okay to send them out

6:12 that is not true. They do not toss their babies at predators. However, macropods have strong control over their pouch muscles and one of the anti-predator responses in females with larger young is to relax their pouch muscles so the joeys drop out. Which then would prevent the predator from hunting the adult. Sad but makes sense in nature - the baby wouldn´t survive on its own if the mother would die, while an adult losing their joey can have new offspring soon. No throwing involved though, guess it was just an unlucky choice of words.

ok the show is called Old Enough and let me tell you I did not stop smiling watching it. It shows such great family dynamics and the kids really do learn independence and responsibility you see them basically do something they have always done with mom all alone but the parents always tell as many people about the kids coming by plus the crew is in disguise and they make sure the kids are crossing roads safely and some of the smaller kids have little flags made by the parents with reflective tape so any car can see them omg its so cute how they think and how proud of themselves they are. Their self esteem basically skyrocks.
