Ok couple of personal anecdotes for some of these!! 1. Regarding 4:35: I used to work in clothing retail and one of my belts needed an extra hole and so I used the spiky bit of a security tag to repeatedly stab a new hole into it. Bit of effort but worked well enough. 2. Regarding 6:03: Me and my brother have a competition every year who can get each other the worst Christmas present. My brother has a phobia of touching tin foil and so one year I bought him 6 rolls of tin foil wrapped in tin foil but with a layer of normal wrapping paper over the top and so the foil wasn't noticable straight away. Watching him unwrap the paper, find the layer of foil and very tentatively peel it away only for 6 rolls of foil to fall out was probably the most entertaining thing to have ever happened on Christmas for me.

6:51 might actually work, the first circuit in those wall chargers is a diode bridge, which is just 4 diodes arranged to convert AC to DC, and it does not care if DC is the input, it would just pass through, so if they got the voltage into the right neighborhood, it probably works.
@averyalexander2528
@averyalexander2528 Жыл бұрын
I'll add that the power supplies can often tolerate anything within 100v - 240v AC or DC. They had 13 batteries * 9 volts = 121v DC. It seems like it adds up. I might try this. For anyone who wants to do something like this themselves, try using a car charger instead, they will often work on just one 9v battery.
@Sovek86

yeah, I was thinking the same thing..... now I want to try it and see what happens. too bad I dont have a use for 13 9v batteries...
@ccoder4953
@ccoder4953 Жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly - that supply probably makes DC almost immediately from the AC. It might not have worked on the old, heavy wall warts that were just a transformer, a diode bridge and some caps, but for most modern switch mode supplies (which, if your phone charger is at all recent, it is), it'll probably work just fine. Just beware that you do have enough voltage and current for that to be just as much of an electrocution hazard as having bare wires plugged into the wall is.

@@averyalexander2528 Or you know, be that weird person who nails the input voltage exactly with a series string of 8 AA, C, or D batteries (or 2 6v lantern batteries which each consist of 4 1.5v alkaline batteries internally). 9v batteries aren't great for that purpose. Or if you have far too many lithium-ion 18650 batteries and nothing that takes 3.7v and converts it to 5v, just put 3 of those in series and connect that to a car charger (make sure they're internally protected cells first, over-discharge is the best way to damage a lithium battery in a way that it might catch fire the next time you charge it).
@Wolf359HeavyIndustries

It will work with even fewer batteries. 120vac rms rectifies to about 165vdc, but some of those adapters have buck converters that don't cut out until the input voltage is close to the output voltage. I have an old dirt bike with a extra winding in the magneto that was originally intended to run a head and tail lamp. Open circuit it supplies 15-90 volts depending on RPM. I run that right old WiFi power adapter to run a small LED offroad light. I even used tie wire to stick an old wall outlet to the front fork. The whole dirt bike would fit right in to Mad Max. Or this video lol

For the 9V battery charging hack on 6:55, a switching AC adapter can accept DC voltage because the first thing it does is converting 120V AC to DC with a bridge rectifier. In this case the bridge rectifier just kicks back and relaxes.

Ok Lexi as a proud new Yorker with a father who had a really really good hack for glove warmers. Get an extra pair of gloves (the knit ones not the tight fitting kind) one size larger. 6:49 no, it's actually plausible. Modern chargers are based on inverters, they don't care whether they are powered by AC or DC. However, 9v batteries are known to provide little current, so that is what might not work.

6:38 may actually work because the first thing that happens to power going into one of those chargers is being rectified to DC.
@manman-sg1zt
@manman-sg1zt Жыл бұрын
Well, yes and no. Some chargers have ransformer whitch is the first thing that current sees after going into the charger In whitch case it would most likely turn into an incandescent light bulf for a brief moment. Maybe a bit overdramatized but it would definitely heat up because It has a certain impedance at a certain frequency and when frequency is 0, the only thing holding current at bay is the resistance of the copper wires whitch is not very high. Now yes because most chargers don't have transformers and they do have bridge rectifier that makes sure current goes only one way. Now the terifying bit about how do they lower the voltage is they pass those 120V through a mosfet (or any other transistor) that then pulses it with a tiny duty cycle over a capacitor that get's charged to those 5 volts. No wonder my fingers are vibrating when I plug my phone in and drag them over metal parts of the phone because that's basicaly mains voltage, just turned on and off very fast a very briefly. Don't know if it will work for you because I have 230 in the wall.
@soundspark
@soundspark Жыл бұрын
@@manman-sg1zt If you are getting a buzz of your phone charger you likely have a knockoff with poor isolation between the line voltage side and the low voltage side. A genuine charger from a reputable manufacturer will not allow mains voltage to leak into the secondary.
@manman-sg1zt
@manman-sg1zt Жыл бұрын

6:39 Inside one of these power bricks is a *FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER* that basically reverses the polarity each time when AC cycle goes negative, so you get only the positive peaks. But in between these peaks there isn't any power, so they use a little capacitor to change the (120 - 0 - 120 - 0 - 120 - ...) to a continuous (115 - 115 - 115 - 115 - 115 - ...). Not exactly 115, it's just that capacitor smashes the power peaks and emptyness in between them into a continuous signal (DC), exactly what these batteries provide. That means you can simply connect them into the correct polarity and as long as there's positive voltage (which there is constantly) it gets trough the rectifier and the capacitor just like it does in a 60Hz AC

5:50 I'm like 80% certain that's a fuel full spout for a gas station. I'm quite familiar with them because it was part of my job as a "fuel clerk" to make sure the spill bucket around it was dry, even though the pumps we used never lasted more than a month. But yeah, those are supposed to remain locked, I assume so that someone can't steal the gas directly from the tank, which I would really like to see someone try to do.

I'm gonna say one thing, Lexi? You know better than most what is grown in Iowa. In Texas, when I lived there for a year, most people there thought Iowa was Idaho, as they believed that Iowa is where we "grow them potatoes".

The phone charger hack would work. Phone chargers use a flyback circuit which requires a full-bridge rectifier to convert the AC to DC, but it will still work if you apply DC directly.

i have to say, i'm a bit of an obstinate asshole. there's a lot of view points that have made rational, logical arguments that differ from my own personal stances that i have rebuked out of sheer stubbornness. lexi, you have single handedly gotten me to accept trans people for who they see themselves as, not what their biological material says they're supposed to be. i cant really even begin to understand what it's like to wake up and have to take a leak, only to use use an appendage that doesnt match what i see myself having. the closest i can get to that is my own mental image of myself is somewhat lean, full head of hair and pristine white teeth whereas reality is i'm bald, fat and my teeth are... less than pristine. you keep doing your thing girl, and if you and you're wife are ever in southwest Michigan, kamikaze shots are on me.

My favourite thing is people learning to be more accepting of identities that don't fit with the 'norm' :) also with the 'not identifying with what parts you have' I can tell you for a fact it makes my already pretty shit perception of reality even more frustrating lol

It takes a lot of courage to admit you were wrong, and even more to fully change your ways. That's real awesome. As a trans person, thank you.

I finally made it into an emkay video. The Phone heatsink post was from me. The aluminium has contact with the Phones backside through a hole in the Case and I think he used a thermal pad.

As someone who's used a chainsaw a lot, the idea of adding Nos to one is terrifying. You know the asshole before you filed the rakers down so that sucker's going to bite hard and dislocate your shoulder.
