They just wanted to dance with each other at prom. Here's the full love story of Emma (played by Jo Ellen Pellman) and Alyssa (Ariana DeBose) from the spectacular new musical film, The Prom.
The Prom follows Dee Dee Allen (three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (Tony Award winner James Corden) who are New York City stage stars with a crisis on their hands: their expensive new Broadway show is a major flop that has suddenly flatlined their careers. Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key), the head of the PTA (Kerry Washington) has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). When Dee Dee and Barry decide that Emma's predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images, they hit the road with Angie (Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells), another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift. But when their self-absorbed celebrity activism unexpectedly backfires, the foursome find their own lives upended as they rally to give Emma a night where she can truly celebrate who she is.
Directed by Ryan Murphy, The Prom is the big-hearted film adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical. Screenplay by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin.

12 minutes in a 2 hr 12 min movie, why was their love story so sidelined when it should be the main focus?? And these 12 minutes aren’t even completely about Emma and Alyssa’s love story! I really liked the movie but this was definitely the most disappointing aspect. Its almost like they didn’t want to show the Lesbians in their own movie.

For those here who don’t understand why others are complaining: the movie cut quite a bit of Emma and Alyssa’s dialogue in scenes, even verses from their songs were removed. And yes, the movie is about Emma and the Broadway actors but the movie added things to the film they added subplots for Deedee and Barry, they didn’t add more for characters like Emma, Alyssa or the other actors. Just Deedee and Barry. It feels like the filmmakers just wanted to show off that they got Meryl Streep and James Cordon to be in their movie when instead they could’ve given more focus on the lesbian couple (you know, the couple the movie was centered around).

okay, so this is based on just seeing this video and not the movie, I kinda dislike that no time is given to Alyssa. Its about Emma, and when Alyssa brings up her mum, Emma's just like well only we matter. Good for you Emma for being ready to come out, and its good to encourage someone to take that leap too cause she can provide the strength needed. But when someone has legitimate concerns their mum might react badly... I dont think that should be swept aside. Living your authentic self is truly the best thing to do, but you have to acknowledge that for some people this comes at the expense of family. Why is this always undervalued? Especially when you're a teenager still, the consequences could be living on the streets. This is why you need longer storylines, because if these are their entire scenes then... they're barely given the time to exist as a couple. In real life you would hope that Emma would be more supportive, and they would actually go through these emotions together. But this happens in every movie, can we not have one where emotional breakthroughs happen with the other? To me the emotional weight comes from them being a lesbian couple in an underrepresented world. Do we care about them because we get to know them as a couple, no.

@crystalgo8401

This is what I was exactly thinking. I feel as though that Alyssa could have stepped up as a girlfriend at times but Emma wasn’t that good of a girlfriend at first because she was pressuring Alyssa to tell her mom. I mean when Emma told her parents they disowned her so knowing that it must have been hard for Alyssa to even think of her mom’s reaction. I think we definitely didn’t get to see much of there relationship in 12 minutes let alone the movie being over 2 hours in general. I still think the movie sends a great message just wishing we could more of Alyssa and Emma. Also wished to see Emma being more understanding of Alyssa’s situation.

Woha... this was like watching my own coming out story in a musical. I didn't expect that. I was weeping the whole time. This is great, I can't believe it.

Alyssa’s mom’s reaction when she came out hit so close to home that I am in a flood of tears…so I am not the only one who has gone through this abusive crap and thought it was just “normal motherly love”…

This is film of enormous relevance and importance. Rejection and misunderstanding can damage people in a way that holds back these people who just wants to be themselves I'm not gay but have watched this film 4 times., Just. Because you don't understand there feelings would you not help them if they were hurt knowing this, if you say no this, then it's you have a problem friend's disagree but true friends put there friendship FIRST but not fall out. In film Emma breaks up with Alissa but would have remained friends nevertheless, but Emma owned the problem and sang that wonderful song,, the rest is history. Great film.

as a real life lesbian maybe its not the greatest idea to pressure your partner into coming out to people who are obviously unsupportive? Alyssa had explained her mom was openly homophobic and then she still breaks up and abandon her because alyssa was too scared of the aftermath? like arent they seniors, couldnt she have just supported her and waited for a time she was ready?? just peeves me how emma was rhe one “hurting” because of it, like good for you that you had the will power and strength to come out regardless of what happens but not everyone has it so simple
