The scene where the mom tells her daughter that she doesn't want her to have a hard life and the daughter replies with, "it's already hard." Hit me like a bus, especially being a poc and a gay woman. I cried for hours.

I'm a Brazilian woman who came out when I was 16 much to the consternation of my Father and Grandparents seven years later none of them attended my wedding but I was surrounded by people who love and accepted me for who I am. 12 minutes in a 2 hr 12 min movie, why was their love story so sidelined when it should be the main focus?? And these 12 minutes aren’t even completely about Emma and Alyssa’s love story! I really liked the movie but this was definitely the most disappointing aspect. Its almost like they didn’t want to show the Lesbians in their own movie.

For those here who don’t understand why others are complaining: the movie cut quite a bit of Emma and Alyssa’s dialogue in scenes, even verses from their songs were removed. And yes, the movie is about Emma and the Broadway actors but the movie added things to the film they added subplots for Deedee and Barry, they didn’t add more for characters like Emma, Alyssa or the other actors. Just Deedee and Barry. It feels like the filmmakers just wanted to show off that they got Meryl Streep and James Cordon to be in their movie when instead they could’ve given more focus on the lesbian couple (you know, the couple the movie was centered around).

If there is one thing I hate. It’s Alyssa’s mom seemingly getting forgiving. The ONLY good thing I take from this is that Alyssa didn’t have to go through losing a mother as well as her father. She needed reassurance more than her mother needed redemption

okay, so this is based on just seeing this video and not the movie, I kinda dislike that no time is given to Alyssa. Its about Emma, and when Alyssa brings up her mum, Emma's just like well only we matter. Good for you Emma for being ready to come out, and its good to encourage someone to take that leap too cause she can provide the strength needed. But when someone has legitimate concerns their mum might react badly... I dont think that should be swept aside. Living your authentic self is truly the best thing to do, but you have to acknowledge that for some people this comes at the expense of family. Why is this always undervalued? Especially when you're a teenager still, the consequences could be living on the streets. This is why you need longer storylines, because if these are their entire scenes then... they're barely given the time to exist as a couple. In real life you would hope that Emma would be more supportive, and they would actually go through these emotions together. But this happens in every movie, can we not have one where emotional breakthroughs happen with the other? To me the emotional weight comes from them being a lesbian couple in an underrepresented world. Do we care about them because we get to know them as a couple, no.

Omg! I loveee thissss! This makes me happy that I'm bisexual and transgender ( i didn't get surgery i just want a binder) but this was really nice and I love this, it was so cute watching them both fall in love and finally be who they were at the end. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THIS IS AMAZING! I NEED TO WATCH THIS MOVIE!

I wish Caitlin Kinnunen and Isabelle McCalla had a cameo appearance in this movie. Something like the Stan Lee cameos in Marvel.

as a real life lesbian maybe its not the greatest idea to pressure your partner into coming out to people who are obviously unsupportive? Alyssa had explained her mom was openly homophobic and then she still breaks up and abandon her because alyssa was too scared of the aftermath? like arent they seniors, couldnt she have just supported her and waited for a time she was ready?? just peeves me how emma was rhe one “hurting” because of it, like good for you that you had the will power and strength to come out regardless of what happens but not everyone has it so simple

For everyone complaining about how their story is so short, and the whole movie focus was Emma and Alyssa, one they can't show the whole movie here the person could get fired, and two the main focus was Emma and the Broadway actors. not Emma and Alyssa.

That's the fucking thing. In the original Broadway version, Emma and Alyssa were just as important as the actors. Nobody overshadowed them. In fact, for the promotional posters of the broadway version, the actresses of Alyssa and Emma were always in the front. Whenever they advertised The Prom, the actress of Emma was always the one in the center. The broadway actors were never the main focus.

People are talking about how this is the main plot of the movie covered in 12 minets but... it’s really not. Most of the movie is aboutEmma and she gets a lot more screen time then this makes it out to be. In fact, maybe separating them was the point because it made their union at the end feel like more of a victory.
