I think when we are fat/chubby we can talk about the relationship to fat phobia and how we feel good in our bodies because it is our experience. We all have bodies, we all internalize fat phobia. We need to talk about it. Personally, I want to be a big, chubby, strong, masc nonbinary lesbian. You got this Maddie! Way to show up you guys 🙂 great episode!

Catieosaurus, advocate of ADHD and chronic conditions awareness, as well as sex ed, had a good spin on the spoon theory concept , (" fork/ aka spork"). -Speaking of chronic conditions that overlap or intertwine to effect both physical and mental health : the umbrella term of symptoms, dysautonomia, has been more widely discussed lately due to long covid, BUT the constellation of effected organs can sometimes be pre-existing or unrelated to the pandemic, too. ( It has a lot to do with the sympathetic nervous system, "-but wait, there's more!") Speaking of resources and public education: there's The Dysautonomia Project. An article about one of the many diagnoses that might have this as part of the experience, Ehler's Danlos syndrome, was the main focus in " Psychology Today", 11/16/22, * but had a portion about this additional feature: " Dysautonomia, in particular, is often misdiagnosed as a psychiatric disorder because it can present symptomatically as anxiety, panic, attention deficit disorder, and hypomania. Autonomic dysfunction results in a depletion of energy reserves due to chronic sympathetic nervous system overdrive. These patients often have very poor sleep quality due to chronic pain, which then leads to daytime fatigue, exhaustion, and an inability to manage stressors. This depletion puts them in survival mode and further activates their sympathetic nervous system" Ok, it should be mentioned that co-occuring conditions can and do exist, like emotional dysregulation/ mood disorders, autoimmunity, and neurodivergence, and/ or migraines, and cardiopulmonary conditions, etc. The segment of Science Friday last week on genetic testing as a diagnostic tool, " Scientists Release the First Fully Complete Human Genome", as well as a discussion panel on the1A with author, Sarah Fay , highlight why biological testing might be an important part of accurate treatment of pathologies someday. ( This understandably might all seem overwhelming, especially for contingency thinking problem solvers. For the moment, further self-education about ways to manage whatever layers someone is sorting through and finding people who can relate with compassion might be comforting.)

I totally feel this conversation on gender and weight. I don't have gender dysphoria, but I have had weird feelings about wanting to be the more masculine partner in a wlw relationship, but I don't feel comfortable in that role unless I'm kinda lanky. I think most of it is just the masc women representation I see on social media is usually from very thin or muscular women. I think it's become a problem though because I'm hesitant to date women until I lose weight even though I know that's ridiculous and I shouldn't feel that way. I'm also bi and so I totally relate to Maddie's feeling of "if I'm chubby and also masculine looking I don't think I'll be desirable to men anymore" because it really seems like you need at least one to be desirable to particularly straight, cis men. So I'm kinda stuck in this place where I'm not comfortable messing with my gender expression that much and I stick to looking more femme.

I got sick a few years ago and dropped around 50lbs in a year. It was the first time since puberty that I didn't have wide hips or a large ass, and it was extremely euphoric. I've been healthy again for a couple years now, I'm pear shaped again, and I don't know how to feel. Aesthetically, I prefer the sick body, but I also know how miserable I was when I had it- how miserable I HAD TO BE to get there. It's confusing. I don't hate how I look now, but it's not as comfortable. Also, I think thinspo of your own body is on a different level of toxic.

I'm about to be that person, so feel one hundred percent free to ignore this comment if you don't want comment sections trying to diagnose you, I just thought this might be interesting to you or others: ARFID will make me only eat one food for a week when I'm stressed. Including when I'm sick or on my period. Common food for that is salty but bland things like crackers. For me it was often things like potatoes, pasta or rice with salt and butter and now it's mostly just dry bread and chips. It's an eating disorder and it can be comorbid with autism, but it can also just occur. I'd bet childhood trauma can trigger it. Other symptoms also include not being experimental with foods and ordering the same thing every time at a restaurant, for example, or being really not okay with food that was prepared differently then you are used to. Obviously, not everyone who does this has ARFID, but it is a real recognised eating disorder and if you suspect you may have it, research it for yourself with reliable sources.

Maddies experience with gender identity and body size really reminds me of what I'm dealing with of my race and my gender identity. Liking men is also a part of my sexuality and being of a certain race that has a lot of like mean unattractive stereotypes i feel very undesirable. And so i lean into my feminine features a lot even if it makes me feel weird gendery stuff bc showing off my tits was the only way to get people to like me. I feel like there are a lot of white women who can look and act masc and still be desirable but especially the men of my race are seen as creepy and perverted so if i look like a man then that stereotype is going to be put onto me. I cant change the colour of my skin or whatever and so I just have to find a way to deal w my internalized racism.
