I'd be cautious about wrapping the countertops. I currently live in an apartment with cheap laminate counters and I would kill to have a more durable material like you currently have (even with a few sparkles). Our countertops scratch easily, and I can't imagine any wrap material would be as durable or look as nice as the surface you have and would likely be more of a pain to clean. I do enjoy your renovation videos, and think you've got some great ideas for the rest of the house and can't wait to see the results.

Guys, I strongly recommend you to hire an architect. They will give you ideas or suggestions that you probably haven’t thought of. Might seem expensive (not really) but at the it will save you money and your house will be better.
@meriumi3 жыл бұрын
Agreed (not only as an architect) - with the changes you're planning on making (especially if you're touching any of the facades), it's also likely required. But with all the planning you've been up to, you're probably already aware of this.

Option 2 with the dining space was exactly what I was thinking I would do when I watched your last video! Only suggestion/question I had is whether you planned on putting in a powder room in your pool area? That would be something I would think about especially if it is a long way to get to the nearest toilet in the main house. Looking forward to watching all of your projects!
@EmmaHill3 жыл бұрын
We probably won't put a toilet in there as its not a huge distance back into the house and the downstairs toilet but we have considered a shower area if we can connect into the existing wastes 👍

Love the wrapping the cupboards and would do that first then decide on the quartz. I can't imagine it would look good on quartz or stand up. With the darker cupboards the sparkle might not be so annoying. Also as someone who did same flooring through out, wood not so good in the entrance, bathrooms and kitchens. Got a few good dents in the kitchen from dropping a knife and other things.

We are used to having laminate throughout the house (as we had it everywhere in our old house, except the bathroom) and apparently this type of flooring is more durable so hopefully it will be ok 👍

Hey Emma, Going to look lovely when you're all done. Loved your last home. The luxury vinyl flooring that you've been looking at is really good. The only thing is the more texture or grain... I found really hard to clean when I'm mopping, have to go over it quite a few times to get it to lift off from the divots in the vinyl. Thats the one thing I would change if I could. Hope that helps 💜 All the best for your renos

Emma and Simon this is the first home renovation video on youtube that I’ve watched all the way through!! It’s because you both are so realistic, warm and real, I loved how measured and thoughtful you are about your decisions. Sometimes renovation videos leave me feeling a bit depressed frankly or in ‘comparison mode’ or they are presented in an unobtainable and (unsustainable!) way, but the way you presented your thoughts and ideas just felt inspiring and dare I use the word, normal! I just felt motivated to keep going with the plans on our own place! Thanks both so much, can’t wait for more. X

Great ideas, however, we did have black furniture in the living room. It was striking but a nightmare to maintain. Would avoid wrapping working surfaces as well as it could scratch relatively easily. But regardless what you choose, it will be splendid!

We do plan to get a heat pump dryer (which are apparently much more efficient) but we will also have freestanding airers too that we currently use - as well as a line outside for when the weather is half decent 😂. all looks exciting. great ideas. Also, one could have the Utility room where you propose your Study to be. The garage could then be off your extended dining area, which would make the soft furnishing flow, and doors when left open, would lend itself to more space. Washing could go straight out to the garden and your could build some lovely cupboards shelving, baskets, etc. However, both will look great and LOVE your kitchen idea - cant wait to see the results

So cool with the changes :) One thing to keep in mind: when you “wrap” a light surface with dark colour, if you scratch it a bit deeper, you will see the light material underneath. Same with the floors, tiles and any other material that doesn’t run throughout and is instead composed of layers.

Totally agree with/support Option 2 of Job 4 😅 - way less work, expense, and time (probably most valuable to you both now). Adding windows in your pool house (hello from the US) is a very smart move for safety. If you're going to have pups and kiddos in there, you can never have too many vantage points to keep an eye on them when they're near or in the water. 👏 Finally, a random thought at 29:08 - Simon could be a news anchor if he ever went mad and made a career change. He could deliver "War of the Worlds"-type news in a calm, matter-of-fact way and everyone would be like, "Well, that's that, then." 👍

Hi Emma, so excited to see this renovation journey unfold. Thanks for taking the time to walk us through. Option 2 certainly sounds better suited to your needs (and yay for a long dining table!!) but have you considered including the Option 1 doorway into the kitchen as part of Option 2? I think in the long run you may appreciate not having to trudge through your dining or lounge areas near your front entrance to bring in groceries, take out the trash, etc.
@EmmaHill3 жыл бұрын
If I have understood correctly, there would only be about 1 foot difference from the archway into the dining area to get into the utility and the doorway (if we were to put one in). As that first wall would be coming down it would essentially mean you have an archway into the dining area, then a wall support then a doorway which would be a bit pointless. Sorry if I misunderstood though. ❤️
@littlechicky02063 жыл бұрын
@@EmmaHill Sorry I didn’t explain better! Haha. So what you’re saying is the wall separating the kitchen and dining area (with the microwave on the other side and the French doors) would still be coming down. And so once the work was finished, if you were walking into the house from the utility room: walking straight would be the dining area; taking an immediate left out of the utility room would be the kitchen? My apologies, during the walkthrough it sounded to me like you were going to still keep that entire wall.
@EmmaHill3 жыл бұрын
Yes that's it 👍 there will be some wall left where the microwave is on the other side but the space where the double doors are will be widened so it would be out of utility, into start of dining area and then into kitchen 👍

@EmmaHill3 жыл бұрын
How did it look with the inside done too? We are still undecided 🙈
@kenn19363 жыл бұрын
@@EmmaHill Just like brand new units - she had the wood effect (or wood), and went for a modern colour. It means when you open the door, the inside cabinet looks like it is all part of the unit. It looks expensive - whereas, normal units are white melamine. I have only seen it the once, but as you say its like having a new kitchen. She left her units as they were - in place, but you can move your units around before getting them wrapped, to create a new layout that suits you. By the sound of it, you have it all planned out. I don't know how they do the actual wrapping, but I assume it is done with heat.

Haha! That was my first thought. I even screenshot it so that I can look for it in Amazon.😄

Option 2 of the dining area and utility seem to be the better lay out. That was my initial thought before you started describing Option 1.

Good Morning!! Glad you came to tell us how the renovation is going!! I'm curious!! This house is wonderful, full of light!! Renovating during the winter should be more difficult. You guys are great with renovation and decoration, the house will be beautiful!! Kisses and good makeover!!

Hi Emma, I think I would distribute the space between the garage and dining room among both rooms equally, keep the garage and include a utility there. It is always good to have a garage to have the option to keep one car inside to shield from the elements as well as to store bicycles, tools, etc. I am sure that no matter what you decide it will turn out wonderful!

Oh we definitely won't use it for the car (too lazy to open and close it every time 😂) plus the drive goes right up to the doorway so no need to worry too much about my hair getting wet 😂

Can't wait to see what you do! I love the idea of wrapping the kitchen cabinets. I'm against wrapping the countertops, but glad you can remove the covers without damaging the stone if it doesn't work out.
