Emma, I am currently in hospital with my 4 month baby waiting for a liver transplant. His belly is very distended as is normal for his condition. It can get in the way of achieving milestones. He was evaluated by the OT and physiotherapist and they were shocked with how well he could do tummy time. Now we are working on sitting and he’s doing really well with that too. I really want to thank you. Following your advice got us working on these skills early before the ascites could stop him. So now despite it, he is still meeting milestones. OMG EMMA! We have been doing all your exercises since birth and all my baby’s milestones were achieved very early. A few hours ago, he surprised us by transitioning from being on all fours to sitting on his own. I was very shocked. From a Google search for paediatric occupational therapist: Occupational therapists working in paediatrics: Help children achieve their developmental milestones such as fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination to help with play, school or independent skills (e.g. throwing a ball, getting dressed, holding a pen or utensil). In Australia, it's typically a four year degree at university then additional training is likely undertaken to specialise in paediatrics. Sitting them up seems to be a cultural Thing. I was told repetedly from pediatricians, midwives, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, nurses... Not to sit them up at all, they will do that on their own if their muscles are strong enough. Same with walking btw. Some said that sitting them up early slows the gros Motor develompment and increases the risk of not crawling. There is a huge emphasis on crawling here.

:/ idk. I took some calcium pills during my pregnancy. No one told me to stop taking them. Now my baby's the female hulk. Ok, she's not. But I'm pretty sure she'd cry if I was doing something wrong. And she can hit some mariah carey notes too. 😑 I feel like the medical field would charge 2-300 just for even weighing your baby. & thats the whole entire pediatric visit,,,,, so, honestly I think some things should be taken w/ a grain of salt. They say swaddling is great too. But I'd like to keep my baby's awareness & alertness in tact thx.

​@ahhwe-any7434 actually swaddling is great before they can roll (shouldn't do it after they can, suffocation risk). It teaches body temp regulation and self soothing. Once they begin to move around on their own, and can roll from back to front, you don't swaddle anymore. And you don't swaddle excessively

Hey @Pri USA great video idea. I will try to do this soon. I do find bottles that have a straw which has a weight on the end the best for babies. These tend to have handles on the side too. The benefit of the weight on the end of the straw (the part in the water) is that it ensures the little one is always able to suck water up no matter how they are holding/tipping the bottle.

Hi @Maria Daniels and @Em Princesa1818 I would recommend waiting until 4 months of age. At 10 weeks I would focus your energy on tummy time. Over time you will notice you slowly reduce the head support you are providing your baby when you hold them in your arms because they no longer need it. This will all help in developing the muscles required to sit.

Hi @Hanane Hatimi it sounds like you are referring to developmental milestones - so the age babies are when they typically achieve fine motor and gross motor milestones. I have a video on 3, 4 and 6 month developmental milestones that you might find helpful. Is that the information you are after? You can start tummy time (lying on their stomach) straight away so when you get home from hospital if there are no medical complications and your baby way born full term. Supported sitting (where you are holding them at their trunk to support them) can start when they have good head control so this is usually around 4 months of age. Babies start to grab toys with their whole hand at 3/4 months. They can only hold it very briefly at first and then they drop it.

I'm a bit confused by this video. I'm in Europe and here I read everywhere that it is strongly discouraged to sit a baby, including propping them up with cushions, unless they can sit themselves freely. This means, when their brain center for coordinating this movement and necessary muscles have developed. If sat up too early, articles, experts and moms in forums write that the spine may be damaged and they may develop a "sitting hunch/hump". any sitting activity should not start before 6-8 months of age..totally confused :/

Depends on development. My daughter started to attempt sitting at 4 and a half months and now she sits comfortably with minimal support but doesn't crawl. Sheis just short of 6 months. My god daughter sat independently and crawled reliably at 7 months. Compare that to my adopted niece whom is unable to sit without ample support at 7 months. Genetics? Routine? All babies are different because all humans are different

Western parenting is very stressful. I did not teach my first to sit, and don't plan to with my second. My mother finds sleep training horrendous as it wasn't in the culture yet she expects LO to sleep through the night soon ( we're at 3 mos). She says it happens when you relax and have enough milk. You want to tell me that parenting is based on science and not an industry and sells useless and pretty much archaic information to mothers of human babies? If you really knew "science" you would know two of the least "researched" and tested groups are pregnant women and babies precisely because of ethics surrounding testing on these subjects. And the sleep community is NOT science. Sleep aids that kill babies- not science. Contraptions that are expensive to keep babies occupied so a new mom can do it all alone with no community support and in the most backward states, less than 2 weeks maternity leave... Do you know how many children die of SIDs outside America? In many parts of the world it's not a thing. You know how many women outside the west have PPD? How long maternity leave and how much better it is outside US? "Science" yourself. Research on babies, pregnancy and parenting is based on self-reported data. Pick up an article or two on the most recent debate, COVID-19 vaccines and you'll see precisely how we're at the point where pregnant women can get the vaccine and how under researched this group is. I'm happy to say, in my community, country and paediatric system the views of doulas, mothers and women as primary caregivers are taken seriously and even included in the new parent packs you take home after birth. Take time to read about revisions in the of psychiatry and ethics of clinical trials. Understand why we have sociology - and how data is collected. Look at parenting our the world - these are humans, not robots and you'll understand why parenting and children aren't things to be fixed or controlled. If this is what you think, you need to seriously consider your options as a parent. You know which communities have had baby and mother massage therapies for centuries? African and Asian. Empirical and learned evidence is information- it doesn't have to fit into your lens to count as data.and just becuase your community discovers something today and a scientist or researcher writes something about it, doesn't make it new. Likewise, a two man team can't make up.something and force a whole people with experience to do it. Nope dear, this is the 21st century. Hello Emma. In Czech republic general reccomendations of pediatricians and physiotherapists are NEVER to teach children to sit up with help. They should sit up without any help when they are ready. It is said that premature sitting can badly influence development of spinal muscles and spine, because of non-physiological pressure which heavy head puts on spine, which isn´t fully developed and stabilized. According to what is said, premature sitting up can make child skip crawling and lead to more frequent occurrence of back pain in adulthood. What do you think about this?

...leave them alone to play on the floor with interesting things to get them to wiggle around. I followed RIE principles and both my kids were sitting on their own by 4 months and walking by 9 months. But just leave kids alone and they will figure it out on their own.

@@wonderland1911 RIE would say that kids (developmentally normal children) will develop and achieve physical milestones in their own time if given the freedom to explore. Thus, some kids like mine may hit movement "milestones" faster but this is not necessarily good or desirable for every child.

I am not forcing my baby to sit but the development is haste. He started controling his neck at 3 weeks old and now at 3 months he is forcing to sit. Is there a cause for alarm or it's normal with some babies?

My baby is 8 weeks. She does not have full head control as in her head being 100% still and stable, but she can hold it up just fine with some jerky movements and look around. We are also practicing sitting every wake window. She loves to just sit with my support around her ribcage, and just look around at stuff. Some people are saying she should not be able to do this at 8 weeks, and that its due to her having tension in her muscles and not actual muscle strength? I can feel her activating her muscles and she is sitting more upright than curved, as in i can feel her muscles when she straightens her back to sit upright. If it really is muscle tensions am i then hurting her by continuing?

You should consult a pediatrician physiotherapist. They should be able to check her muscles and if there is any tension in her muscles. It's true that skipping milestones can sometimes lead to little issues. My husband for example skipped crawling and he admits to being quite bad with coordination. You might have a super baby with lots of strength too😅

Tysm, I'm trying to teach the baby I babysit how to crawl and I heard Tummy time and balance is neccessary. She definitely has a lot of tummy time but she still wobbles when sitting. Also shes only 5 months, but she'll be turning 6 months next month on the 9th. Is all of this too early?

Hi Sheryl it sounds like your little one is a little way off crawling at this point (which is very age appropriate as crawling is a skill bub's generally learn between the age of 8 - 13 months). At this age I would expect your little one to be still learning how to sit independently (which is a skill bub's learn to master between the age of 6 - 9 months). I would recommend you continue with tummy time, play while lying on her back on the floor and supported sitting (as shown in this video). With time your little one will master sitting, then move onto transitioning into and out of sitting and then crawling. Hope that makes sense!

OK, I rarely comment on anything but I have to now. The best way to help your baby do anything is to not help them at all. Except early tummy time. Sitting is the peak of baby's development during the first year of life and caretakers should never make babies sit upright (or independently) before they are ready. Babies need to go through several crucial stages before they can sit by themselves - after they learn how to support their weight on their elbows and later on their stretched arms, they start to crawl (use their arms to push forward and drag their legs behind their bodies), then toddle and AFTER they learn to sit sideways, they would be able to sit upright. You don't help your baby by practicing sitting. What you can cause by it is possible damage to their spine due to the pressure they are not ready to handle yet. Help them enjoy tummy time and let them be. Please. There is plenty of literature on this topic.

I would just like to say that as a physiotherapist this video is correct. Emma explains how to assist your baby in sitting when they are READY and over 4 months of age. Around this age babies do have good head control, can place some weight through their upper body and have started to develop some trunk control. Emma explains certain hand positionings and supports that can be used to allow for better core/trunk activation and to support the babies spine. Emma also goes on at the end of the video the importance of tummy time and playing on their back for trunk/core development. So I am not sure if you have watched the video in its entirety. This is great advice Emma. Keep the amazing and informative videos coming.

@@meghancooley9306 Unfortunatelly, I can't link any resource in English as all the studies I have read were done by specialists in my country (Czech Republic) and have never been translated. But their research have proven that premature sitting of babies, even with support of any kind, is directly linked to back pains later in life. Several resources pointed out that some books that were traslated from English (mostly US authors, I understood) recommended such techiques as those shown in the video, and that it may be harmful. My son (4 months old) is in physiotherapy due to extensive back arching when placed on tummy, so I discussed plenty of right and wrong baby handling with doctors, our physiotherapist, as well as read tons of material online. I did not want to be mean or arogant and am sorry if my comment sounds bad.

@@0o0eM this is the common belief in former ussr countries. Isn’t this strange tho? That those studies are not available in English and literally all other medical resources are. I don’t know which is better I’m trying to practice intuitive parenting and sometimes do hold baby in upright position on my laps even tho here the narrative is the same as in your country. What weirds me out is that they often recommended starting solids from as early as 4 months old (against who recommendations) and without any sitting practice it seems to me like quite a risky endeavor

@@Vasilisapo As far as I know, those studies and research were conducted before 1989 when English was not really used here for political reasons. That may explain why, even though CZ has never been part of USSR. I am no doctor but during my research and consulting with specialists I came across more issues which are not considered problematic in "the west" while here are commonly treated (like that arching of our son). If there is a possibility that some unnecessary activity may cause harm to your child, why risk it? As for the solid food - I am not aware of this. Children as young as 4 months old may start eating finely mixed vegetable or milk slurry (similar to baby formula, only thicker and flavoured). As long as the baby's back rests on a stable surface so that their spine is not under vertical pressure, it is safe and they can be fed quite easily.

@@Vasilisapo WOW. Your comment actually blew my mind, hadn't looked at it from a cultural perspective. I'm from Latvia and the general "mood" here is to let babies develop at their own rate and not to interfere with that. It is a lovely notion though and for the most part I agree. Loads of parents proudly announce that they didn't do any tummy time and even some doctors advise against it as babies should never be put in a position that they themselves are not able to get into. My baby rolled from stomach to back first (as we were doing tummy time from birth and for the most part she hated it) at 4.8 months but didn't roll back to stomach until after 5.5 months. We went to a physiotherapist at 5m 10 days, she said that our baby's developing the other way around and she should have already learnt to roll to stomach and that rolling to back doesn't happen until much later if it happens at all. Obviously 😆 I spent days researching the topic and yes! It is agreed that in post USSR and China babies roll to tummy first, babies in USA, India, France roll to back, but babies in the UK, Denmark and Norway are undecided 😂.

Hi Emma! My LO just turned 5 months. He is very strong and reaching all the milestones. However, since he was 4 months old, he tried to lift himself in a sitting position and I’ve noticed his head is tilted to the left, chin pointing to the right. He has full range of motion though and no preference for one side. We’ve seen two pediatricians, a chiropractor and cranial osteopath to rull out Torticollis. He has a bit of tightness on his left side and we’ve been given some exercises and carrying position that could help. He is doing great at tummy time ( a total of 1 hour per day ) and can keep his head lifted and centered when on his tummy. I wonder if you can recommend what I can do to encourage him to hold his head in midline when sitting in my lap or propped. Would this be something he could gain in time or could be an indicator of a problem? I pushed my GP to give us a referral to see a PT but will take weeks and until then, I am nervous that I’m not able to help him more. I would massively appreciate your reply. Thanks so much!
