Mums and Dads stop holding your baby's hands and doing "pull to sit". This is not a baby exercise. It is not a newborn activity or newborn exercise you should be doing. It will not teach a baby to sit and it is not a great baby sitting exercise. Watch this video to find out what 4 essential baby activities you could be doing now to work on a baby head control/baby neck exercises. These baby activities are great baby activities 3 - 6 months, as well as a newborn activity.

Maybe the key is to make them responsible for holding on. I let my son grab onto my 1 hand. With the other I have it ready to catch him if he lets go. He is responsible for doing all the work, requiring his muscles to be activated and lessening the risk of dislocating anything. That’s my amateur opinion. Only since 4-6 months though.

Ohhhh I'm glad I saw this. I've been pulling my 2.5 month old son up to sit since seeing it on a paediatrician's video (he was checking head lag). I assumed it was a good exercise to help him develop strength and stability as well. Plus, I like putting him in a sitting position while holding his hands because he burps really really fast.

I worked with babies and have a degree in early childhood education. I wish I had know this years ago. I have been lifting babies, including my own straight up without holding the head once they have neck control. I never once heard about rolling them to their side before lifting them. Sometimes I think everything I learned in my degree was just useless fluff. The tips in her videos should be taught to everyone who works with babies. Thanks for sharing.

I use one hand to cup her booty the other to cup her head then hold her up to me. She's prob only 7-8 lbs right now, so, it's easy to do it that way. I think she gets neck and head control exercises in when I'm laying down and letting her lay tummy down on me when I burp her. I do kind of let her sit up but in my arms. That way I can control her head movement. I put her on her side when everyone comes back from work, & I let her watch TV or to follow everyone's voices. My tiny newborn, she shows interest in her environment too! I think she wants to play big girl, lol. In due time , young 1. There's such a mean tone in her grunts somexs. So, we don’t do it to exercise our baby (he’s a little over 5 months now), but because he seems to like it. He particularly wants to stand, so we let him pull himself up, and then get his feet underneath him to stand. We help him, but we don’t really pull him. Again, we don’t see this as exercise, but something he just seems to enjoy doing. We do loads of tummy time, and he’s starting to enjoy that as well. We also place him in a sitting position to play with toys or look at a book (which is really just another toy to him at this point). So as long as we’re giving him “proper” exercise, is it detrimental to be doing the pull-to-sit activity? Should we stop doing this?

It’s crazy that this method was recommended to us at a special infant care clinic for our 29-weeker. I had watched this video prior to our visit; and voiced concerns about stressing our baby’s joints. The specialist said that we could put our hands behind behind baby’s shoulders as an alternative method; but I will opt for those outlined in this video. Thank you!

Actually it does harm your baby. It can cause rounded back in future when baby is sitting as well as ligament damage in her shoulders. If your baby grabs a knife and smiles it doesn't mean it's good for her...
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 3 жыл бұрын
During a pull-to-sit the normal response is the baby will right their head and maintain it in line with their shoulders. Baby's initially have very limited neck control and their head is very heavy in comparison to the rest of their body. Until they have sufficient neck control their head falls backwards. When you pull your baby into sitting there is a risk your baby will sustain a neck injury. When doing a pull to sit in an assessment we do the movement very slowly and actually stop the movement as soon as the baby's head falls behind their shoulders to ensure they do not sustain a neck injury. The movement is done slowly to ensure the baby has time to react and turn on their neck muscles. I agree babies do appear to like it when this is done, but from my experience it is the funny faces, kisses and reactions from the adult doing the movement that they are enjoying and not the movement itself.

While you give GREAT advice, you don't tell WHY you shouldn't pull to sit - just not to do it and you tell other things to do. Also, in one of the last frames,a man holds an infant with the baby's buttocks resting on the man's arm . PLEASE DON'T DO THIS !!!! I used to work at a church run childcare and there was a father who held his child like that while he was having a temper tantrum. The child was so upset that he threw himself backwards and - because his father was holding him like that ,it actually BROKE BOTH OF HIS FEMUR BONES AT THE SAME TIME !!!!!!! After that, I have ALWAYS held a baby or toddler with his/her thighs straddling my waist and my arm around his/her lower back . That way,if the child was to throw himself backwards, my arm would support his/her waist and back and nothing would be injured. Please advise your parents/patients to do this instead of holding them with their arm under the buttocks !!!!! It might just SAVE the child's femur bone(s) . Thank you for your advice in your video !!!!!!!!!!!

I did it only per therapist recommendations. My daughter had a bit of left torticolis and her muscles on her right side was kind of stiff so we did during therapy session and when I’m working alone with my daughter on her muscles it never as a play time exercise. She doesn’t have that stiffness anymore so I probably won’t be doing it anymore if therapist says so.

My paediatrician told me to do this with my son who had no upper arm strength. However the way she taught me to do it, is don’t just lift him yourself because that can damage the joints, go off of him, if he pulls upward slowly and gently start pulling toward you while still being able to support him. She specifically told me to follow his cues, and to not just pull him. I did this for about a month and now he has strong upper body strength! But this is good to know

But isn’t it okay when you just hold their hands and they pull themselves up and you just assist him slowly, holding his hands while he pulls himself up? My 3 month old son does that. Just wondering, is all ☺️

Hi @Ivy Dini-ay and @Priyanka Kannan if you are going to do a pull to sit with your baby then doing it slowly is better as it gives them time to switch on their core and neck muscles. Just check to make sure your little ones head is not falling backwards. I find babies tend to love the funny faces /kisses and giggles parents make when doing a pull to sit and not necessarily the movement itself.

How do you pick up a baby with two hands under armpits like when you did the roll. It seems obvious like everyone does it but no one explains how to do it? I guess you need to support the head a bit with your fingers?

Curious why pull to sit, which you mentioned is used to assess head control shouldn't be used as an exercise. If its being used to assess it, doesn't it mean its engaging the same muscles required for head control?

Actually my pediatrician with 30 years of experience ask to practice that exercise. We give our baby our hands and he lift himself up to sitting position.
@phedreBiOn
@phedreBiOn 2 жыл бұрын
And this is conflicting information from another pediatric source. You just gotta be careful and bear in mind the potential risk. The potential risk from this source with this movement is that your baby can sustain a neck injury if the movement is done quickly. And she argues that when pediatricians do the move, it is slow and is stopped as soon as the baby's head lolls back.
@simplekaty
@simplekaty Жыл бұрын
@@phedreBiOn you and others seem to be missing the point that the baby is controlling the movement, not the adult. So it is impossible to do it "too fast", you are just holding out your hands for them to grab. No pulling involved.

If baby has no head lag and has adequate neck strength to fully suppoet their heads... they tuck their neck in anticipation and look like they want to do a crunch. Is it okay to do this movement? I dont even pull her, she holds on to my hand and essentially pulls herself up 🤔

Baby Sparks app suggests this one and I’ve been doing it a lot with my 4 month old son over the last few weeks. 😕 I’m so glad I found your channel! I originally got here through a search on the Hugaboo and all of your tips on supporting sitting have been so helpful and also support your tips on sleep regression. He needs to spend a lot of time upright after eating due to acid reflux and he eats so dang slow. The physical activity he’d been missing due to this wait was really bothering me. Now we’re making good use of that time and though we haven’t been at it long, I’m feeling optimistic about his sleep improving.

I'm doing it but only as an assistant, the baby does all the work, we started since month 1 working on the grap, then the arm pull (all the force comes from the baby, he pulls himself up, I don't apply any force) and now at 6 months old he is able to pull all the way up BY HIMSELF, he likes it and he asks for it when it's playtime

I don't think it's safe to pick up your baby under hands or sideways, especialy without head suport or child head control skills. Am I right?
@dawn6232
@dawn6232 5 ай бұрын
Why can’t you stabilize the baby from the sides of the shoulders with some slight compression inwards, waiting to see if they contract their neck flexors before raising them upright? Or, do the same sides of the shoulders inwards grip from sitting and slowly lay them back to see that they will contract their neck flexors forwards and stopping if you see they have no control or if they do continue laying them back? Obviously you wouldn’t do this complete transition with a newborn with no control, but you could try and elicit a neck flexor contraction just through the initial attempt at sitting then up with the support at the shoulders. Never by the arms due to dislocation potential.

We've been followed by an OT for plagiocephaly and she helped us with general milestone builders. Pull to sit was one of the exercises she recommended. We started from the shoulders, worked our way to the elbows, and eventually the hands when he had strong enough anterior neck strength. I think it's how it's executed?
