My niece is into the cult of the lamb game, and she went as the lamb for Halloween. My brother had to tell our parents that she was a lamb queen so that they wouldn't flip out. . . which the have done in the past with me. I've been wearing a very close friend of mines pentacle since he passed in 2008, and in the beginning they completely freaked out about it, screaming for hours, telling me that I'm evil etc. Also, I absolutely loved the sushi eating cat game

What did Satan ever do anyway? In fact if one were to switch the roles of God and the devil in the bible it would make much more sense narratively speaking. For instance it's not Satan himself that sends people to a fate of eternal torture in hell, it's God, Satan is basically just there with you. If you see evil as preaching hate and inflicting pain, torment and death on other sentient beings God is the biggest offender by a long shot. My wife is literally the proof of what you're saying. She grew up in a charismatic Christian cult in Ridgecrest -- a shithole town in southern California -- in the 1970s. She lived in an actual compound -- I've been there and seen it. She believed sex was evil and horrible and degrading and bad... until she tried it and that's when the whole thing fell apart. "They lied about this, what else did they lie about?" It didn't help that at that time, her mother was shacked up with someone who had some money, so the leader of the cult said it was OK, "God put them together". My wife saw that the whole fucking thing was a lie. To be fair, I didn't try to deconvert her, but I'm just about as skepitcal and irreverent as they come. I didn't directly challenge any of her beliefs unless she asked me what I thought. We both got deep satisfaction about me being _exactly_ what her mother warned her about.

No joke, I collected Pokemon merch when I was a kid in the late 90's/early 2000's. I had books, comics, plushies, keychains, posters, etc. One day, my mom came into my room and told me she found out Pokemon meant "pocket monsters" and forced me to throw out all my Pokemon merch. I'm still pissed about it to this day. And I even brought it up to her recently, and she doesn't even remember doing it! It's definitely a real thing. They genuinely think Pokemon is Satanic.

The most rebellious thing I did growing up was playing a Pokemon Emerald game a neighbor lent me. The first thing I did after turning 18 was watch the Harry Potter movies I stayed a Christian until I was 22 because it took me that long to process the trauma. You know what drove me from Christianity? It was the holier than thou housewives deeming me possessed because I was disabled. It was self-proclaimed righteous men in the government trying to legally dictate what love was allowed to be. It was the circular groups of otherwise kind adults salivating over the X rated horrible ways their non-christian friends and colleagues would die after the rapture happened. It was the realization that people outside of the faith (cult) were NOT HORRIBLE BAD PEOPLE DESERVING OF EVERLASTING TORMENT. These "cultural" things are just scapegoats. Things for them to blame when their children leave the faith. And I'm fine with that. It means that they will never know the real problems and more children will make it out of these groups and to safer places where they can find help. The world is becoming a smaller place, and especially with social media the fundie's can't stop everything from getting through, and even the most devout children grasp for those small glimpses of reality like a dying man grasps for oxygen (take it from someone who knows). They will fade into obscurity and we will move on without them. Good riddance.

I grew up in the church. One that had this approach. And you’re exactly right about the affect it has on the kids. A few of the troubled kids cling to the views into adulthood. Most of us have left entirely and are vehemently anti-religion. Especially the indoctrination practices that come with them and how traumatic those can be for kids specifically. The religious trauma is a real thing with far reaching consequences for people’s self esteem. Often leaving people with irrational guilt and feelings of inadequacy, because religion, especially Christianity, beats that guilt and inability to measure up into your head. “You’re not enough.” “You were born evil and can never be good on your own.” How can people think that telling children this is not abuse?

Can confirm. Fundamentalist Christianity left me with severe low self esteem, thinking I wasn't worthy of life, suicidal, depressed, etc. It was only after leaving the faith I finally found joy in life, because I no longer believe I'm a broken "sinner" in need of salvation. But a human worthy or love, dignity, and respect. And I've seen the damage it's done to other Christians. My dad was the sweetest, most loving person I know. Yet he called himself a "monster" since he wasn't perfect and had no self worth. I think Christianity had a lot to do with that, on top of his childhood trauma. He didn't see himself as the amazing person I saw him as. And it left him with severe anxiety and self-hatred.

This, I haven’t went to church for 2 years now and as dumb as it may sound, it’s been so much less stressful to just enjoy little things. Like watching shows with gay leads, recently I bought Cult of the Lamb because it was so cute and haven’t put it down (when I would have been extremely guilty or wouldn’t mention I’m playing it to anyone.) Exploring fashion and what I like without worry about if it’s modest or too out there. Just cursing and not feeling guilty although I pick and choose where to do it. There’s so much people in religion try to control about your everyday life that you don’t realize. I have a younger cousin doing Art in college and she has the barrier of thinking any form of nudity is bad so, she having a hard time studying human anatomy to be accurate.

The Pokémon cards thing hits different. My uncle’s collection of cards he collected when he was a kid came into my possession, and it was no small handful, it was an entire shoebox full of originals with some pocket monsters, darks, team rockets, etc. My dad “accidentally” left them out while he was moving us out of the old apartment about 6 years ago I think at this point, and they got water damaged. I know it probably wasn’t an accident because he said stuff like “I shouldn’t be interested in that stuff anyways” and “it’s for the best”. When I was a fundamentalist Christian, raised that way and deprogrammed myself, the very first crack in my programming came from realizing the nature of the Bible. The rationale I had heard for Christians rejecting these games is that they may convince you that your soul is in peril, and that anyone other than God may lay claim to it. Or that it may minimize the threat of Satan and the demonic, by convincing you that it can be resisted by mortal means. In other words, your typical Christian double-think. The games pose no threat, because God owns you and you can never actually sign away your soul in any sort of pact. But they're also incredibly dangerous, because they might convince you that Satan isn't a threat and can be resisted without God's intervention. Also, you need to stay eternally vigilant against threats to your righteousness and moral standing. But also God is a shepherd, is always by your side, and wouldn't allow any harm to come to you.

My mom used to be this way whenever she saw a game that my father bought me for the PS2 back in the day. She’d use our Catholic faith when she wanted to to justify doing things that fit her preferences, not as a means of being “moral”, such as not letting me watch Avatar the Last Airbender or play Okami on the PS2-found out later she didn’t like them mainly because they had non-white characters in them, and she hated seeing anything with non-whites in it. But other than that, I wasn’t allowed to watch anything Asian, since she wasn’t very fond of those people. She was divorced for Pete’s sake, so by age 11 I knew she was a hypocrite. She never told me this directly, but if I hadn’t married a man who was white (I just happened to fall in love with a blue eyed man because I love him) that she would have disowned me. But at least when she asked how I got my morals without a deity, she shut right up when I told her I had to actually think things through rather than being a heathen, partly because that’s how we evolved as social creatures. She at least recognized biology for what it is, but she’s still about 140 years behind on racial science.

I wrote a essay on the argument on violence in video games. My take on the arugment in this issue most of the times when violence happened it was mostly realted to psychological issues (mental health), access to weapons of any kind, and etc. Like i remeber one argument was that M rated games will make anyone violence (i have played gta when i was in middle school and not even committed any crime in real life cause surprised i knew it was a not real and my parents made sure it was not real and not to do that in real life) but the problem with that argument is... there factual evidence that is the case. A example, during mid 2010's a video game EA sports tournament (rated E) was happening and one of the players who lost, shot up the place. So people who trying to make a point that video games are violent, to me makes no sense since its like fiction is reality to them but fiction is "fantasy, not real life, etc"

It is heavily implied that it was a hate crime but most places just won’t be very clear about it. I had at times investigated such matters. it very very rare that children are impacted let alone harmed.i did feel the cult-busters were weirder than so called cults. I forbid staff to use phrases like cult, radical and to use neutral terms like faith community. It is not the states role to say what anyone can believe. I was raised secular, and find all this fundamentalist extremism weird and somewhat concerning. Being an irreligious homeschooling parent in America is a trip. Everyone just assumes that you want a Christian curriculum, which 95% of them are. On all the message boards people just assume that if you are homeschooling, you aren't secular. Any advice they have to offer is faith based. It really bugs me that most people I know in real life don't know I'm an agnostic atheist, and assume that I'm homeschooling because I'm some kind of fundie. I'm homeschooling because my children were receiving a lot of really toxic attention from their peers, and it was affecting their mental health. I wish I could just proudly say that I'm an atheist but it's one of this situations where I would have almost no one left in my life, and I'm just not ready for everyone I know to turn their backs on me.
