The Master is one of the THE Classic villains. He was in 21 stories in Classic Who, which puts him up with the Daleks. He was designed as a kind of Moriarty to the Doctor's Holmes. An intellectual equal. The success of the character was primarily down to the first actor to play him - the legendary Roger Delgado. Such a don

- That drumbeat is so infectious. Years after first watching this I still tap it out if I'm in a bad mood. - "This is Gallifrey" which plays when The Doctor is describing his and the Master's childhood is one of my favorite DW tracks. Perfectly conveys the feeling of longing for childhood and a home that's not there anymore. - 14:41 The Doctor actually wore a similar outfit in the Classic Who story "The Deadly Assassin". The 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) put it on when trying to stop The Master from killing the President of the Time Lords - Other Classic Who references were The Master repeating "Peoples of the ___ attend careful" which he said in a Classic Who story and at one point he offers his wife "a jelly baby" a candy which the 4th Doctor would regularly offer to friends and enemies.

The drumbeat is the rhythm of the bass line in the Doctor Who theme, you'll notice. And the outfit is the robes of the High Council of Gallifrey. Both the Master and the Doctor have commented on how... pompous... the Time Lords can be sometimes (there is a reason both of them left Gallifrey - disobeying the non-interference policy - and ran away). But, yeah, on Gallifrey, those are the official robes of a Time Lord.

You were wondering if it was theorized about the Master being the Doctor's brother. That wasn't just a theory, that was hinted before in the classic series and almost happened many times, but Doctor Who is the master in the art of being ambiguous so, really, the truth is what you make of it. Great reaction, Emme! This episode is really cool and I imagine that with all of the context Torchwood brings, it makes it even better. John Simm was so good as The Master, his version is so much more unhinged and insane from the other incarnations. Also I love how he planned for everything perfectly, he was 100 steps ahead of The Doctor. The Sound of Drums are extremely important and you will find out what that means later on, The Master uses it as hypnotism, which he is a master at, pun intended. He used hypnotism a lot back in the day but they are more than just a device. Also The Master, while he is The Doctor’s archenemy, The Doctor cares about him, he was his best friend and now one of the only Time Lords in existence.

Yes, people theorized the Master was the Doctor’s brother :D. He first showed up as the doctor’s arch-nemesis in the 1970s. There are a number of times when both Russell Davies and Stephen Moffat (who were both fans before the ‘new’ series) poke fun at all the fan theories. RTD didn’t know what “president elect” meant… he thought it was another word for president. And I’m sure the actor was British. It was a very “americany American accent” :D. This episode was quite good, especially the flashbacks to Gallifrey. Classic fans knew who. the Master was, but this was written in a way to clearly inform new fans without an obvious exposition dump. As far as aging, yes, time lords age, and one of the doctor’s regenerations was from old age. But they age slowly.

You'll love it!), but there's something in there called a "Somebody Else's Problem" field, which basically makes you invisible to someone, because their brain considers you "Somebody Else's Problem", and not something YOU need to worry about. Douglas Adams was British, and the original adaption of the first two books were made by the BBC. You would probably like it, but it's absolutely insane! 14:14 I'm not sure if this was the intent but this might of been a dig at Universal Studios. But it requires some pretty niche knowledge to get. In 1996 Universal Studios worked with the BBC on a TV movie which was meant to act as a backdoor reboot of Doctor Who. The TV movie didn't do great, so the TV show was cancelled which is just as well because since then behind the scenes reports and pretty solidly confirmed leaks have given a look at what might of been. The plot of the opening season (which would of been produced by Universal) would of included the revelation that the Doctor and the Master were half brothers and they would team up in order to search for their missing father Ulysses. Needless to say fans are glad we got the 2005 reboot instead of that. All that said the movie does have something of a following now (although a lot of it's fans have knowledge of the Big Finish stories that retcon and recontextualise a lot of the movie) and Paul McGann, who debuted as the 8th Doctor in the movie, is a fan favourite to many as he's done some superb Doctor Who audio dramas and is very active in the fandom at conventions and signing events.

A lot of people like the idea that the Master is the Doctor's brother, but it doesn't really work. In the Master's debut episode (in the Third Doctor's tenure), he and the Doctor have met at least once, but mostly know each other by reputation. Also, on a couple of occasions, the Master tries to get the Doctor to join him, and his attempt at establishing a connection is that they're both Time Lords, implying that's the closest available link. Lastly there's a 20th anniversary special with all (as of then) five Doctors, and the First Doctor doesn't know the Master at all. But they've been fighting each other for a long time now, so they loom pretty large in each other's minds by now.

These two episodes are so good. John Simm is excellent as the Master, a lot of interesting questions get asked, a lot of interesting scenarios get set up. Yeah the master for New Who is interesting as while in Old Who, the war part New Who focuses on and being the last one really does change the meaning. Ah time.jump thanks to Jack. Ah the Utopia. The tapping, the drums. They explain it. Always when he is around. Yeah he doesn't exist, like Jack, he is a perosna. I forget Lazarus matters too here. They do align different aspects from the past episodes for sure. Yeah bunch of UK actors no idea who they are. Yeah brain washing. Lucy his wife and everyone else around him. Only Torchwood or others know the truth. Yeah the Toklophane (no idea how to spell it) it's very sad once they explain them further. In the phones like Cybermen hmmmm..... Yep back to 42 the holding them hostage...... Scene. Ah yes Torchwood pushed aside hmm. Too much tv XD A date and secret brother. Gallifrey getting shown in CGI it's beautiful. Ah UNIT stepping in right. I always think of it as a US service type as I forget how often UNIT steps in around early New Who besides old who or later new who. Ah Tellitubes yep what a show. Television in your stomach. I didn't mind it back in the day. Used to have a Lala toy too. Here comes the drums taking on a new meaning (if anything about the bass then while an over done thing in some songs my pick would be Draper Night Rider of that ever had to align with something)..... So next episode is gets really sad but Martha does an excellent job just like the Family of Blood (I know seen the members only mention in the playlist and your weeks ahead videos). It's so funny and smartly written. It's goofy but in a charming way. Well it would be scary, fair theories you had but yeah...... Killing people and the Utopia has a different meaning when you find out (members marked and 4 weeks ahead of course but yep I bet it does as it's very twisted). Yep very sad. The news, tv shows (like S2 EP11/12) and other details Davies does is usually pretty good. The stakes are interesting. The perception filter, Martha not being noticed mentioned again and Jack knows like what happened with Rose. The little details are very entertaining. Him being a leader in plain sight this way is interesting. Then of course goes further. Anagrams for Yana/Master. Didn't know the master one but another comment or put it and it makes sense.

Utopia is the best episode of this finale 3-parter, imo, but this one isn't too bad - until the last 5-10 minutes, anyway. I think this story would have been far better if they'd just stuck to having it be The Doctor, Martha and Jack being hunted by every resource the Prime Minister has at his disposal, with them needing to find a way to bring down The Master in the process. Instead it all gets a bit silly. And then, in the finale, completely stupid. Not a fan.

Teletubbies were way after my time, so I never actually watched them. I come from the 1960s and 1970s television generation.

The lady standing outside with Big Ben quite far behind her is long time very traditional values Conservative MP Anne Widdecombe. I may not agree with some of her views, but I have a lot of respect for her. She’s also quite famous for her appearances on chat shows, game shows and other TV programs.

@Temeraire101 she is also quite a prominent aupporter of Brexit, Farage and Trump - the writers really knew what they were doing casting her for this cameo. 😅🤣😅

It's ironic that this gets posted on the US Election Day.

Oh I don't know there is a even more on the nose story that could have been put on a US election day.

The thing I don’t get is why the Master didn’t have a contingency plan for Leo. Clearly he must have known he existed if he knew who Martha was, so why did he allow him to wander around without getting him a job in his government to keep an eye on him too? Cos I don’t understand what the point of Leo’s character is. He’s thus entirely absent for the events of the finale, meaning that the trauma endured by them isn’t shared by their sibling… so why does he exist? The party in episode one could have been for Martha or Trish, Leo has no other role in the story so I don’t get why they bothered writing him in. Maybe they had other plans and the actor had other commitments?

IIRC, your final suggestion is correct - Leo was originally going to have played a much more prominent part in episode 13, but the actor was unavailable.

Doctor has fought the Master since the 2nd Doctor era. They have used different actors to play the The Master but you can always recognize The Master no matter who is playing the character. Master is like the Ying and Yang to the Doctor. The only other Time Lords I know from the Classic era is Romana. She was a companion of the 4th Doctor. He was training her as an apprentice and I think he had some romantic interest for her since they were both Time lords. Eventually she did leave him to be on her own. He left her one of his K9 Models to help her.

Romana was his superior.

I feel like of anyone implied to Romana's face that she could have had a crush on The Doctor, she'd throw up in her mouth a little. Also The Master was first introduced during the Third Doctor's Era.

Tom Baker and Lalla Ward were briefly married, but I do t think there was any suggestion of a romantic relationship between the Doctor and Romana. Mind you, for much of that series they were doing "romantic date" things - punting on the Cam, visiting Paris...

The Master being the Doctor's brother was going to be a real thing at one point but the actor that played the first master died in a car accident and the story was abandoned
