One of the saddest things about all this is that Emmett didn't just "whistle" at the women. As his mother has told in her interviews he had a horrible stutter and she taught him that when he started to stutter to whistle to refocus his mind and it helped him to speak. So he whistled while trying to speak to the lady in the store and that lead to his torture and demise.

What happened to Emmett Till & George Stinney Jr. has haunted me for years. And I often think about how those two boys are just some of the ones we know about. How many? How many slipped through the cracks & were covered up? How many innocent victims are there that we don’t even know their names? Hundreds? Thousands? If Mamie Till hadn’t handled this the way she did, none of us would know Emmett’s name either. That woman is a warrior and she did right by her baby. As a white person, I’ve went through a bit of a reckoning over the last decade, and the bubble I lived in burst open. To my fellow white folks, if these stories make you uncomfortable, GOOD. I hope you don’t stop here & you continue to educate yourself on the history of black people in America and likewise, the counterpart to that history; the white supremacy that continues to trickle down into our system. Look at yourself & your own biases, your own prejudices. When I first started confronting my own thoughts, it wasn’t fun at all. Growth is supposed to be painful. This stuff is generational & it’s like a cancer that festers and grows. I’ve learned that it’s not enough to just not be racist, you have to really get to know yourself & pay attention to the stereotypes or prejudices that you have. They might be small, so it’s harder to recognize them in yourself but for most of us, they are there. These micro-aggressive, knee-jerk reactions in reality can be some of the most dangerous forms of racism. Not all racism is racial slurs, or open discrimination; it can be covert and sneaky and that makes it harder to combat. I hope I don’t come off self righteous because I know I still have so much to learn. I actively work at it daily, to check myself, because you never stop learning. I just want to speak up because maybe even just one other white person will listen and start to look at themselves closely. Sorry for the novel if anyone actually even reads this. I just feel so so much sadness and anger regarding the racial injustice in this country, both past AND PRESENT, and I felt compelled to share. 💜

Just remember all the facts of this case the people who made this video never wanted us to know: He was alone in the store with the woman and when he went to pay for his candy purchase, when she tried to take his money for the candy, he grabbed her and said he wanted to go on a date. Imagine how uncomfortable that would make a married woman. Then she pulled away and he said "what's the matter baby, can't handle it" that's a demented 14 year -old, to grab an adult woman and proposition her like that. Then scared out of her wits and probably afraid for her life, she went to go grab her pistol, with him still in the store alone. He said "goodbye" to her as she left, which I feel is sad. it's like what is going on in his head, what's wrong with him. Then he followed her outside and as she was reaching in her car to grab her pistol, that's when he did a sexualizing cat-call whistle aka wolf whistle, look up what that is., it's not an accidental type of whistle. Then they all saw the pistol and they ran away as fast as they could

Cowards? The fear they had over our black men back then is still indescribable and I think it easier to call them ( Emmits family that night) cowards with the anger of what happened to Emmit Till than to say what they were and what we are even today in some sort. HELPLESS. Can you imagine what his GREAT uncle had witnessed from when he was Emmit's age up until his old age? Towns literally burned down, blacks were evicted from their homes with nothing, that night could've easily turned into one of the many un/documented massacres. The PTSD from that time and the PTSD that ate away at everyone that wished they would've/ could've done more that night. This is a big reason why our grandparents don't talk about the trauma they went through. Having to tell your kids that you must live like you are 1/4 human to survive. Imagine telling your babies that. No help from anyone! In the whole country! Just black mothers tearful prayers and fathers full of rage that cant be let out. I know what I'm about to say is going to be scrutinized, controversial, and I'm going to be told I don't understand, etc., etc., but I can't shake the feeling and I'm going to say it anyway..... I would rather someone kill me while trying to protect my sister's, brother's, or my own kid's young kids than to just give them up to strangers in the middle of the night. He KNEW they were intent on doing him harm. I don't understand how he could ever face Mamie after that. I don't know how he could ever face himself afterward. She put her son in his care and he failed her miserably. Emmett's faces would have haunted me for the rest of my life. I get this was the south in the '50s and times were TOTALLY different back then, as was the mentality of black people, but not ALL black people in Mississippi had that mentality. I'm sure PLENTY died because they didn't and I'm sure a very small few were left alone because they didn't. All I'm saying is I'd rather have died myself trying to protect that kid than hand him over to people I KNEW would kill him. The terror that kid had to be going through when the person who was charged with protecting his well-being was handing him over and being fearful because he pretty much knew what was about to happen to him is truly unimaginable. People can slam me, insult me, call me stupid, whatever. I don't care. I just couldn't have given the boy up like that.

Failed him and Mamie miserably. We would have ALL been walking out of that house. He should NOT have died alone! The sheer terror that child must have experienced… unimaginable. And Mamie was one strong woman… much stronger than her uncle!!! To deal with her child’s torture and death, making funeral arrangements while demanding an open casket, the smell was horrible (I read her autobiography) and to go down to Mississippi to testify against her sons killers was admirable. Moses Wright out to have been ashamed of himself! I know things were different, but just allowing a child to be snatched out of your house while you do nothing is deplorable.

Check the average lifespan of caucasian women. It's not really her fault. I mean I guess she got street justice, but what Till did to her was pretty upsetting too. She was the first victim in this case, she was Till's victim. He grabbed her and scared the wits out of her and did a wofd whistle at her. That's innappropriate in any place and time in the world. No 14 year old kid should be grabbing women in a hostile, sexual way like what he did and he told her he wanted to date, then told her 'what's the matter baby, can't handle it" I mean he deserved to get some sense knocked into him for sure, but what happened to him was well beyond justice and it was an act of sheer depravity what happened to him, but it was a series of events he caused to happen, unnecessary mistakes on his part really, they warned him about the South and he acted dispicably and it caught up to him.

I understand times were different back then but i don't care if it's 1955 or if it's 2022, and no matter how big he was there's no excuse for 2 big grown men to take a child from his home and beat, torture, and murder him the way that they did. My son is Emmett's age. I can understand intellectually what it was like for Mamie Till Mobley, but I won't pretend, as a white person from oregon, to understand how she really felt. Losing a child? Yes. That is universal. However, there is no way to unravel the racism and hate from the common strands of a mother's grief. What I do take away, is how much strength, class, and dignity she carried herself with. She is one of the most inspiring women of the many that I have learned about. She reminds me of Coretta Scott King, who carried herself with just as much grace when her husband was murdered, and then honored his legacy with activism for as long as she had a voice. In both situations, I would be absolutely useless with grief. I will try honor the legacy of both by keeping the narrative accurate when I pass their stories down to my children. I won't be able to leave a bunch of money to my kids when I die. The only inheritance i can afford to give is one of tolerance and a strong dedication to justice, so that the ugliest parts of history might not be forgotten and repeated.

@@luvmelonqtym , then we would have all died honorably. His grandfather and uncles seemed weak, in my humble opinion. Why did he answer the door without a shotgun? This family was totally defenseless while living under those conditions. They all should have had weapons including the grandmother. I will never understand them allowing some white folks to come in their house in the middle of the night and take their flesh and blood. I've read stories during this Era where bold black folks met white folks with resistance and their shotguns at their doorsteps...even women like Billie Holiday fought White men who tried to do her wrong. Smh. 😔
@luvmelonqtym2 жыл бұрын
@@jermainereed9143 This was 1950’s Mississippi. Ppl were dirt poor and probably couldn’t afford food let alone weapons. Honor comes in many ways and in this instance women and children were in the house and they still had to reside there and because of it we were able to hear the story. A lot of black ppl were weak if they wanted to live another day… THIS IS FACT. The opportunities presented today would make the actions of this family weak when in fact it was a matter of life or death. Listen to his cousin’s actual testimony… this is only a piece of it. Do your research… Billie Holiday was famous…with money… and they still dragged her. The black culture varied in financial status which means opportunities varied.

@@luvmelonqtym Thank you. I have watched a number of documentaries or interviews with the cousins and I still just have a hard time with it. I understand the era and location. But I also understand other poor Blacks during that time and in the deep south who resisted white terrorism. I will never, and I've tried, understand them allowing those white folks to come in their house and take away their blood child. I get the cousins were kids, but those grown ups were told what happened at the store. The granddaddy didn't even try to 'smuggle' the boys put of town. He knew the time he was living in. Moses will always be a weak man in my eyes.

This story always hurts my heart...it just makes me so angry and frustrated that this poor child had to go through that...I can't comprehend the pure evil and wickedness...it makes me cry, I just hope he didn't feel any pain, his spirit guides and his loved ones in the afterlife took his soul before they did what they did to him...I don't really hate anyone, but I harbor so much hatered and anger towards that racist women who caused all of this. Omg!! he was a baby! 😪😔 ...how can someone do such a thing...the hate was pure evil back then...and these hateful pigs called themselves Christians...fakery of it all. I really hope that Emmitt Till knows he captured millions of hearts and I hope he see the love he is getting now. I avoid reading and watching anything about his story because it hurts me to much to hear the things he went through and when I see photos of Emmitt Til smiling and looking so handsome and innocent...my heart sinks...makes me yell out WHY! Just know all those involved are getting there punishment.

Why hate her, look at her side of view. He was alone in the store with the woman and when he went to pay for his candy purchase, when she tried to take his money for the candy, he grabbed her and said he wanted to go on a date. Then they all saw the pistol and they ran away as fast as they could
@CoolhandLukeSkywalkr2 жыл бұрын
She didn't even tell her husband and brother right away, from my understanding she tried to kept it secret, but a lot of people in town were talking about the cat call/wolf whistle and that got around to the husband, that his wife had been disrespected in the store. After these events she divorced the killer. What do you want from her, it's not her fault that Till harassed her like he was a gang member.

@@calebco7985 I support African Americans in virtually 100% of cases involving white people. But in this specific case, that kid instigated the entire situation. It's not like a George Floyd type of case. Not at all. Emmett Till put his hands on a man's wife before anyone touched a hair on his body. I'm Jewish, not Anglo-Saxon, BTW, and I support African Americans. What happened to Emmett is unbelievably evil. But Emmett Till caused his entire demise. As opposed to other cases, where the victim was completely innocent. Emmett Till was guilty, but a fake mythology has been built up around this case. It's become 99.8% afrocentric pseudohistory revisionism now, like the Tulsa Race Riots. The twisting of the actual history to relieve Black people of all responsibility for their own actions is something I don't like and I can't get on board with.
@CoolhandLukeSkywalkr9 ай бұрын
@@calebco7985 African Americans consistently view Emmett Till as an innocent child, instead of what he actually was, a guilty, thugged-out teenager who went around attacking and sexually assaulting adult white women. Imagine if he hadn't attacked a woman in her store, groped her, and then did a wolf whistle? He would still be alive. In fact, Emmett Till had fully realized what he had done, and he even attempted to make arrangements to flee back to Chicago. Because after he had committed crimes in that store, he knew fully well that his days were numbered. It was his great aunt who refused to allow him to flee back to Chicago. She mistakenly believed they could talk their way out of it. But Emmett Till fully intended to flee. Innocent people don't do what he did.
