A beautiful Beatles song, first recorded by ELH on the Pieces of the Sky album,now performed and filmed during The Transatlantic Sessions in Ayrshire (Scotland) in 1995.

I am here because I heard a show yesterday hosted by Rosanne Cash on the Sirius/XM Beatles Channel and she mentioned Emmylou's cover of this song. Had never heard it before. Rosanne said she loved both versions despite how different they are, and she was right. This is a GREAT rendition.

I think she does pull off this Beatles cover, and brilliantly. She reminds you what a good song it is, bringing out all the possibilities. Beautiful.

For No One is one of the most crushingly poignant songs ever written. And this version more than does the original justice, right down to the low whistle substituting for the French horn. Emmylou sounds fantastic too - brilliant.

I can't stand most of today's country, but classic country that includes absolute musical INSTITUTIONS like Emmylou Harris is a different story. In addition, the Beatles are my favorite band, this is my favorite of their songs, and BOY, does she sing it beautifully. There's no voice quite like Emmylou Harris'. Thanks for posting it!

I have to say, I like playing guitar to entertain myself, and so I found her to be a nice artist to play along with. But I have to say that as I looked at her I have to agree with you. She looks better grey than she did when she was young! Of course, even if she is getting old now, she will always have a great track record as an artist, and that lasts longer than beauty in this world.

@panlemans "I'm not too fond of people covering Beatles songs, but this one is soo beautiful." In general, I agree. The original versions are etched so deeply into my mind that anything else seems a sacrilege. But Emmylou's cover of "For No One" is an exception to the rule. In fact, I find that I prefer it to the original. It is so much more soulful and sad. She sang this at the White House in a tribute to Paul and was absolutely wonderful. You can find the whole program at the PBS site.

I remember mom buying my brother Ricky a Mustang 5.0 GT in 1986 for $8000. Ricky drove that until his daughter Danielle was born circa 1997. So strange the things we remember later in life. This was down in Stoughton, Massachusetts in the 80's and 90's.

She is an interpreter. To me, most of the songs she has covered are more beautiful than the orginal ones. It is just my opinion. She is one of the greatest interpreters that this world has ever known. Another one i can think of now is the late Elis Regina of Brazil.

I feel the floor boards give way beneath my feet and could wish my feet were fleet...hurt too much to even sit...and bit by bit could never again find normal there was a storm...it never came...it just kept brewing... though the brewery down the street offered no possibility and the impossible became possible and both just a no exit strategy that extends past the vanishing point of no return...and yes I am a no one...and who would miss a no one... that's right...no one.

This beautiful version of the song is so radically different from the original Beatles. I would love to know who decided to depart from the original style. Was it Emmylou or one of her favorite writers? Her version probably my most favorite song of all time.

A great version. I wish Paul would have slowed his version down maybe later in a live show. This is about the time that Emmylou was beginning to lose her upper range. It can get on your nerves but she still gets through beautifully.

i disagree. the beatles DID NOT have "stiff upper lips". just b/c they're british doesnt mean they cant show emotion in their work. they all blow everyone out of the water. that is why i loved them @ first. they showed such emotion like i have never seen. this is a good cover though.

Well, oranger, we agree on their status as artists - in fact I have them # 2 to Dylan. My point is that there is poignancy here that is masked by the almost kaleidescopic manner in which the Beatles music accompanies the lyric. Even Paul's "demo version" is kind of bouncy.

Beautiful, but, unfortunately they blew it by adding musical resolution at the end. Sir Paul wrote the ending to the music to purposefully reflect the lack resolution of the character's emotions.

@JohnKater197115 жыл бұрын
I agree. However the stoicism is very much in the vein of their recordings. They almost always maintained that stiff upper lip on most of their performances. They are English :) it is their job :) But a great tribute to the giants of composition. It gets no bigger. period.

Lennon-McCartney had the right idea, when they wrote the words, and when they wrote the evocotive melody. But I don't think they recognized the intensity of the emotion expressed in their song, which this performance does.
