My daughter, granddaughter and I visited my 70 year old husband yesterday at the nursing home three hours away experiencing dementia. Our 40 years anniversary is December 31, 2023. My husband and I said the Lord’s Prayer together. He did not miss any of the words. I asked him what he does when I’m away from him and he said he talks either Gid about me and everybody. I did not go further about his conversations. I thank God he is not in any pains. Photos and videos were captured. I have learned how to cope and deal with our long distance. God has given me strength, peace, understanding, wisdom through every step of the way. Spending time with our daughter and granddaughters that live near me is so much appreciated. They are seeds of his seeds. Our two sons that live out of town with their family are also a joy. Thanks for reading my comments. Smiles

My father-in-law passed away from dementia. I feel deeply saddened for you and your family and for Bruce who after all is going through this. My husband passed away this passed Easter from Congestive heart failure after 10 years. His last 8 months were very difficult with him hospitalized 6 times from Aug 2022 to April 2023. We were married 44 years, 3 kids, 6 grandchildren. I was his wife and care taker those last months. Oct. 2022 he was told he had years to months to live. I'm greatful I was there for all of it. He and I were able to say our goodbyes. Be with Bruce as much as you can, because there will come a time you will be greatful you were there. Honor him, love him and remember him. He's an incredible actor, but that doesn't incapcilate him. He's a beautiful human being first. Here's wishing and praying God be by your sides. God speed to you and yours.

@jillmalone-ri8pz So greatful you are there. What you do cannot be more needed. My husband died in an ICU in a wonderful hospital, but instead of helping him die, they did everything they could to keep him alive. That's what ICU's are for, but he was never going to recover. The difference as you know all too well are that doctors are taught to save lives, so this is what they do to the very end. Palliative care are doctors who are trained to know when someone will die whether years or months out, which they did for in Oct. 2022. They're unfortunately an hour away, and I did what my husband asked. We went to a hospital only 20 minutes away. He was being seen in between hospitalizations by his cardiologist who in an incredible physician who kept my husband alive 10 years after diagnosis, but he's trained to keep his patients alive. My husband's last night at home he couldn't stand up. The doctors on the ICU said his potassium level was very high at 7. That's why he couldn't stand. It was shutting down his muscles. His electrolytes were terrible, this after several months of barely eating. I knew something was terribly wrong, but got no guidance from anyone. Told his cardiologist and he brushed it off, kept saying "no salt". His legs were leaking plasma his last month. Nurses came in to bandage him. No one ever said he needed hospice. I knew his weakness, eating very little was very bad. Our medical system is broken. He deserved better than to end up on dialysis with 6 iv's going, trying to keep his kidneys working. They had his on oxygen that ended up in a full oxygen mask leaving only his eyes uncovered. His last day he had air hunger, gasping when he finally told me "stop it". "Stop it". After the doctor determined he understood what he was asking for they began by removing the IV's. I'll never forget the young nurses hands shaking as she did this. Then the mask was removed, the port in his neck for the dialysis machine, and Adderall and Morphine given to him in the port in his neck, and he passed peacefully. Perhaps this is the way it had to be, but what you do is compassionate beyond measure. Happy New Year and God Speed!

@@DH-gk8vhthe worse part about that is you didn't know Enough to have them discontinue everything for him! When my husband was Palliative he asked me when time was right to Stop all machines! Worse decision ever in my life l did. But it was better then watching him suffered even more. He was only 35 yrs old at Christmas time. Now in Ontario Canada we do have MAID.lm helping with my best friend right now who was just diagnosed in March with Alzeheimer's and Dementia and she has signed up for MAID. It's legal here. When she decides l will be there with her and her son and his new gf to do as she wishes. But until then lm making the most out of her time still here and doing as much fun things as she wants. Whatever she can tolerate. I'm always there for her. It's sad for me and her son becuse we are left behind and when my husband was ill l wished we had that. We didn't nor for Mt mom but we did have the choice to stop the machines and allow them to die with dignity! AMEN😢😊

I wondered that they share their lives with a literal world of strangers. I read this to see if they were or its gossip.. Having gone through a similar life altering circumstance. My child's astrocycoma now a fast moving Parkinson's with my husband. I selfishly read this. I don't know what I'd choose to do however, people would cruelly make up whatever. It's better to control the narrative in a world seemingly out of control. From stranger to stranger, I reach out my hand. AvaDean.
