Your approach is very soft and easy. Makes the person not feel rushed and guilty for the decluttering Journey. I see how the mind takes the process of the person and makes the person go through the thoughts, Emotions, and memories still remain. Hording Happens due to some part mental depression or from trauma in their lives. Your approach Helps them in so many ways. Thank you for showing this.

A lot of people here are being really critical of Tracey 'never going to' Great Unhoard or change her ways, but as the daughter of two hoarders, can I just say it doesn't actually matter. If she had to let go of things immediately then she probably would have spiralled, got overwhelmed, burnt out, and not reached everything. Sometimes it is just important to go through and touch everything, and be reminded what you have, even if you only get rid of a small percentage. Also, even if the Great Unhoard turns into keeps... she has still decluttered a HEAP of stuff. And if she does get rid of it later, then that's a bonus.

Hoarding is very often a reaction to trauma, or, the act of buying is a dopamine high & they're addicted to that high. Unless you address that, hoarders usually fill their decluttered space right back up. Its why the show Hoarders has a therapist there for the declutter & gives the owners free ongoing therapy afterwards.

They don't clean. If you dust, it's overwhelming. If that’s just something you don't do, then you can possibly get comfort from looking at it. I am okay with visible stuff in a craft room, but even though I would like a charming vignette in the kitchen, it would stress me out to have to clean it and around it.

I read through the comments and some feel so negative. I am glad they are outnumbered by the positive. Tracey didn't have to do this in such a public way, and it shows a lot of willingness to be vulnerable. I appreciate her honesty. I think she is growing and becoming more self aware. Anyone who has been through this knows what a huge process that is. Things like this take the time they take. Bravo Tracey! You are doing a great job. This declutter is quite hard for me to watch because I too have ADHD and I can see all the mechanisms she is using to delay the actual declutter (gonna mend this one, gonna take a picture of that one, etc) I was like this at one point too. I just wish she could understand how freeing it is to actually purge!! Something clicked one day and it's been 2 years i am hard core decluttering (even though i live in a small apartment it's crazy how much clutter we collect). She will need at some point to be ruthless for her own well being. I will never be a minimalist but I'm getting to a point where everything has a space, nothing is overflowing, i wear and use most of my possession and it's a game changer on my mental clarity and well being. i am also way better at buying things which is part of it and yeah sometimes i have slip up but i try to be gentle with myself.

I'm glad you've found your stride with decluttering. Like you learned from your own declutter journey, this all takes time and multiple passes. And then with the progressive results you start to feel the change which fuels the motivation to declutter more, but getting there takes time. This was Tracy's 4th day of her declutter work with me and though the progress is slower than other series, progress is progress and what's most important is that she's starting to become aware of how the changes are making her life better. Slow and steady decluttering💛

I go through my clothes ever season. Grouping Fall/Winter together, and Spring/Summer together. I need a container for don't wear often, and anything I don't use for the season just donate them. I do discard stained, too worn, or doesn't fit/don't like. I do find that I wear some clothing a lot, others occasionally, and some hardly ever. So I need to start with the hardly ever, and trim it down to four to six items. Then trim my occasionally down to half as a start.

I think your method of slow progress for someone who is so emotionally attached to things is a good approach. You can feel her emotion with everything she touches. I agree about "The Great Unhoard" being a goodbye party for the things she knows she no longer uses but is having a hard time letting go of. The actual documentation may never happen, and she may just realize that its time to let go anyway. I think it is helpful to have her let go to others. She wants someone to love those things she is releasing. With so much stuff and so many things to do on her list, she may never get to selling or "The Great Unhoard" so finding other outlets which require action with little effort is good. Nice work to both of you!

Every piece is so unique and irreplaceable, whether it's from a faraway place or has good memories attached. Tracy's collections are like a wearable scrapbook. I wouldn't be able to part with these things either, not unless I knew the person also treasured it for how special it is. A clothing swap is perfect because she can pass along the story with the item, so the new owner can appreciate it for what it is and share the story with others when they wear it. I love when people have unique and hard to replicate items, and the way they accquired it is part of that story. Where so much is mass produced and treated as disposable, Tracy has found treasures. I can't wait for her to have a closet to revel in her collections. I wish she had a bigger space to really display and curate her items.

Congrats for Tracey for starting this journey for herself. My grandfather was a hoarder and the amount of new things that wound up distroyed and only fit for the trash when he passed was truely sad. And his hoarding protective behaviours (never letting people over to visit or answering the phone) actually resulted ultimately in his death due to a fall and and resulting organ damage after we broke in after we couldn't get a hold of him after 3 days. It makes my heart happy to see Tracey working so hard on cleaning up and starting to declutter and also respecting her own feelings to make this positive for her.

Also, if you’re going to add something new, use the 1 in, 1 out rule. If the new piece is not good enough to replace a piece you already have, don’t add the new thing. It needs to be good enough to let go of an existing piece. That rule helps me a lot because I love what I have and it forces me to pick a piece I must remove before I can add something new. My tiny closet and wallet cannot support my epic love of clothing, and this rule has saved me many times.

She said thinking about decluttering as making room for new things *that she actually loves* makes letting go of things easier. To me it sounded more like a thought she's been using to trick her brain into getting rid of more stuff. Also, not saying that she intends to completely stop buying new things doesn't mean she isn't working on changing her shopping habits. Her saying that she's making room for the things she really loves shows that she already acknowledges that she doesn't actually love all the things she's bought, and that usually translates into being more considerate of one's purchases. That's a really good first step.

She doesn’t have to stop buying things if she doesn’t want to. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s all her choice. As long as her space is still functional for her she can buy and then maybe declutter whatever she wants. @@Janjones7735 you seem to have a very poor understanding of hoarding and the value and attachments hoarders place on their things. Decluttering is very hard on them, in Traci's case she invented a whole project to avoid the actual letting go of the things she decided to declutter. If she keeps buying like that, she will end up back where she was in no time. And it is a problem for her and it does cause friction in her relationship which is why she decided to ask for help.

I love this so much, as an alternative person who has been collecting clothes for 20 years I completely relate. When you wear a lot of unique pieces you don’t want to get rid of them because you can’t replace them and so the great unhoard is a great idea to document those pieces. Clothing for me is part of how I express myself, they’re part of my identity it’s not just my stuff. When I’ve worked places where I’ve had to wear uniforms or conform to a dress code I’m not me anymore. I feel really burnt out from being someone else all day so I now only work jobs where I get to be me. There is a non profit in Bethel Maine called Repant. They make tote bags from pants and t-shirts. Don't know if you could use the idea or commission them for anything. Was gifted one made from my Dad's pants. It's becomes my go to bag as I feel like he's with me every time I grocery shop.

Tracey, girl hang in there and keep letting go of what you can. Small steps is okay. The point is progress. It took me three years to completely declutter my place. I would go through a category and think cutting it in half was enough. Then I'd sit with it for awhile and see that I still had too much. Several categories like books and stationery took me 4-5 passes to get things down to what I felt was reasonable. Just stick with it and don't give up. Many of us are rooting for you!

I think the great unhoard will be an amazing way for her document the memories and tell the stories and then let the pieces go. After several rounds she will have the clothes that are her very favorites and she will have a different mindset when she brings items in. I remember decluttering some stuff and said," I know I will eventually get rid of this, just not right now." Then a few days later I just went and got the item and put it in my donation box (other times it may be weeks or months). Thanks for continuing to inspire me and making me laugh along the way. Tracey, thank you for allowing us to go along on your journey! ❣

The great unhoard category is brilliant! - because it seems like it all gets in to one category. Then you tackle the next step- in bite sizes- to do a dress up & make photographs of (what I imagine) is the fantasy self. (OMG so fun to dress in all them and experience each persona) and then perhaps let them go❤ with a photo memory/document of each of them /all. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ impressive great progress 🎉🙌🏼💯

I am wondering. Has any clothing been donated?? Or been thrown away? Or are all the clothes being moved to the great unhoard project? I see this as phase one of a very long project. I’m hoping her space is transformed and she has the bandwidth for the great unhoard. Best wishes.

If you watch the video you can see them making a donate pile and a pile for stuff to bring to the clothing swap. Tracy also said last time she took seven costco bags to the clothing swap. They spent quite a while talking about the great unhoard and how it's a step towards letting go of the items. Just because they're taking it slow doesn't mean she isn't making progress and already getting rid of stuff.

I honestly believe that while some ppl do have stuff they need to clear out, like we all do. I feel like ppl r being forced to live in smaller spaces that don’t have proper storage space for the tenants to place their stuff. So u then also accumulate furniture to fix that but then u move again and it doesn’t fit,so ur on a vicious streak of accumulating shit to try and make each space work. It’s why our family went minimalist, it’s not because we don’t love having stuff, but that it was just to mentally exhausting trying to always find a place to fit stuff in each space. The ladies you’ve been working with are absolutely beautiful 😊

This is a great point and Tracy and I talked about this off camera as well one day. The total size of their home has to be around 550 sq ft (2 rooms/1 bath/1balcony) without any storage built in. And just as you said, you accumulate furniture to try to fix the problem, but it never works. ...really great point and it's worth while talking about this in the next video we film together. (the next video we have already filmed really highlights this point) Thanks for this comment!

There’s another thing you can do with the items you love that are too worn for other people to wear after you’ve loved them to death. You can cut them up and make a quilt as you go, quilt. (There’s a good hexagon one on KZbin) this means you don’t have to store large volumes of fabric waiting for enough to make into a quilt. You would just need to cut out two sizes of hexagon, stitch them together with the larger one folded over the innards and the pretty front one with a fold to give a clean edge. Then you have a finished hexie to attach to the next one. You’d end up with a lap blanket and you could use a button from the garment to quilt into the center if you like that type of quilting. Then the rest of the worn garment could go into the fabric recycling.

Even if she never completes “The Great Unhoard” as a photography project (listen, I have a dozen photography ideas I have never gotten to…it’s rough 😂), it is definitely a useful middle ground for her right now. Is she possibly sending things to limbo? Sure. But limbo is important. It’s basically her processing space-accepting that this group of things she maybe, possibly doesn’t need to hold onto forever. For now, she is willing to remove them from her living space. Even that she entertains the idea of parting with that stuff is a big step when it comes to adhd + hoarding tendencies. April is doing a great job of helping her not to spiral and shut down. ❤

Love the progress! It's really difficult for me to get rid of things sometimes so I love the motivation. I've put things aside then later went back and decided I don't need most of it. It works if you aren't emotionally ready to let stuff go to set it aside for now and keep going so you don't just stop all progress. As for the typewriter ribbon I found some on ebay before so that might be an option. You could also try to add ink to a ribbon if you have one that dried out. It's messy but is an option I've been told works. My typewriter got damage in shipping so I've been on the search for someone in Michigan that repairs them. It's a cursive font one so not as easy to replace but the prson I bought it from shipped it in the case with no padding.

I’m triggered by ‘The Great Unhoard.’ I LOVE MY STUFF!! All of it! So decluttering is excruciating!! I have got rid of SO MUCH but it looks as if I haven’t cleared anything?? I’m currently stuck!! My version of MY Great Unhoard would be the equivalent of Moving it to my Storage Facility. If I had one. I LOVE my stuff and I do wear most of it… but I want to create a hotel bedroom for myself. A space I would love to spend time in. (I don’t at the moment) so even though I love my stuff, I need to DeHoard and Downsize.

As a daughter of a hoarder; I’m super triggered by the great unhoard. My mother loves to make excuses or find reasons to keep everything too. I doubt she will take the pics or release the items. I love my mother dearly but her love of clothing and items has taken over her house to the point I can’t bring my 3 kids over. This house looks unsafe and items are just not more important than health or safety. I don’t have the answer for this mental health condition… I wish I did. It’s caused so much pain and strife. The joking about it is hard for me to watch.

I think it's really useful to recognise that you are triggered and that you're having an emotional reaction to someone else's space. I think on each side of hoarding there's this conflicting desire for control - on one side: having control of your life, being prepared for the future or keeping hold of past memories, and on your side there's the desire to care for your mum and take responsibility for her wellbeing. If this is all too triggering, take a break, find something different to watch, decide consciously if you want to come back to more declutter videos. Take care of yourself ❤

Am I the one, who thinks, that there is no declutter at all? Just sorting items to different piles? The amount of clothes/shoes in all series about this lady remains almost the same, just few are thrown away. The amount which was left for "Great unhoard" is just enormous, it will take years to say goodbye for those things :) Things, which left for fixing? Sure. Those and "Great unhoard" things will die in those piles in some corner of the house :) Looks like a little bit useless process :)
