This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Emotional responses to music: Individual or universal?
Have you ever wondered why music can have such a profound impact on your mood? How one song can move you to tears in 2 minutes flat and another can make you smile? Well, Dr. Egermann was wondering the same thing and thanks to two distinct but complementary research projects he will have some insights to share with us about the connection between music and our most profound emotions.
Dr. Hauke Egermann is a music & emotions researcher connected to the Technische Universität Berlin, investigating music, sound and media with empirical research methods
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I used to assume everyone felt music the same way and was shocked to find out they don’t. I LOVE music. I can feel it in every inch of my being and rocks my soul. I feel bad for those who don’t, they don’t know what they’re missing.

If you listen to the speakers voice and ignore the meaning of the words you will notice his voice moves between various pitches with various rhythms. Why? Consider that If his voice were speaking in a monotone at a monotempo he would sound as if he had no emotion. We speak with melody to express our emotions. Try playing a you tube video in a foreign language you don't know, can you feel the emotions of a speaker talking in a language you can't understand? You will find that you can. How is this possible? The only way this could be possible is if music of voice is like facial expression, universal and inherent. The inner ear in a fetus reaches full size at four months gestation, long before any other part of the body. This is probably so a fetus can hear the emotions in its mothers voice. Instrumental music is just a demonstration of human skill extending this capacity to an inanimate object much like puppetry extends body language and facial expression to an inanimate object through human skill.

Fun experiment you can do: - find an emotional scene from a movie you like (one with dialogue) - try to match the pitch of their words to the nearest notes. It seems like we're more likely to take large steps up but only small steps down in pitch when happy. The confidence large intervals are around the baseline pitch but really high and lower than normal pitches tend to be where we reel ourselves back in. The opposite is true when sad. We tend to save the large intervals for elevated pitch and energy. When we're close to the baseline pitch, the movements get smaller and less confident. Minor and major scales seem to mirror this experience but in a more codified way. It also seems that the way we structure our conversations and how we tell stories, converse, and listen to others has a big affect on what kind of music we listen to and make ourselves.

Music is a language used with vibrations. The overtones in a Major 3rd relationship vibrate much differently than minor 3rd. The Major 3rd is the 4th overtone in a series and is more consonant, more familiar to the ear, than the minor 3rd. This familiarity adds to the feeling of happiness. Like life, familiar things tend to make you more comfortable and happy. Minor 3rd has more dissonance, not to kind to the ear, which creates that creepy/sad sound. Also, comparing the "sad and happy" melodies: the "happy" melody uses a Ti-Do relationship. The "sad" melody uses a Te-Do relationship. Ti-Do relationship has the most vibrations/dissonance, followed by resolve. This high amount of dissonance, to resolve, creates a strong movement. Strong movements are familiar to the ear and adds to it's happy sound/language. The Te-Do relationship is weaker in vibrations, giving it a weak movement. This creates a sadder sound/language.

Not sure realization would be the right word. In truth I can't tie the emotional response to any one lasting thought or trigger idea. The closest thing I can relate it to was a flood gate release. A general pulling the plug. I had spinal surgery about 2 months prior. My kids theorized about electrical build up, or static electricity... but anywhere I was touched on my skin electricity flowed....it was weird....

Few other things have the ability to communicate with our emotions in the same way that music does. It can evoke emotions in us such as joy, sorrow, excitement, relaxation, nostalgia, and even rage. The power of music to activate the pleasure regions in our brains and cause the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter linked to feelings of pleasure and reward, is responsible for this emotional influence of music. A song's tempo, melody, lyrics, instrumentation, and vocal delivery all have an impact on the emotions it evokes. As a result, music can be a powerful instrument for healing, self-expression, and emotionally connecting with others.

I wanna give an example of my experience with music: rock/metal elicits allot of emotion in me but also, anime/videogame music and the example I wanna give is a mixed bag. Fire emblem warriors is a very high action game that utilises strategy and the music goes hand in hand with it. The music is rock heavy in the action and for me it drives me to attack in force, I pretty much mash the buttons, I feel like a moth drawn to a flame. The softer music is a nice break in between the action, gives you pause in reflection of what has passed and a chance to prepare for another heavy dose of high octane pulse driven action, that's how I see it. There's one theme in this game that is a kin to turning me into a chimera. I say so because, a chimera is a mix of different creatures and I love the topic of monsters and fantasy. The theme is called This Precious World. It starts off with a low key but serious tone as to tell you that something big is going to happen, then the music rampsup and the rock instrumentation tells you to prepare for a huge fight as the battleground is set. Rock and orchestra meet for the battle of all battles within this game and the seriousness is on full blast as a tone of epicness is established. It cuts to a softer downslope with electric guitar playing an emotion tone and this is when I start to feel a little heavy because I get the sense of hope and a good resolution in the battles end. Then the music gets really positive as the light breaks through the darkness and the heroes in the fight shine with unwavering resolve. Then just near the end, there is a slight tone change adding a little more serious vibe before the end which tells you it can still go either way before it ends and loops over. I'm gonna be real deep here... Music opens up the dept's of my soul, I am rendering meself unto an emotional state because I love music, and it takes me to worlds that I can never see in reality. Any game where I can create a chr is of the most joy to me because I can put meself in it and have the best experience I can possibly have and when the music is as I explained above, it feels I have lived something truly great. Music is a way for us to transcend the woes of our reality. Music makes me feel so strong in the moment, it is so pure, so good, so infallible. One last thing. You can choose a boy or a girl as your story chr in fire emblem warriors and I chose the boy. He has blue eyes and blond hair, I have blue eyes and used to have blond hair when I was younger and the action really takes me in, as I stated above. The music on the other hand is what really drives me and playing as Rowen(being that he's like a younger me) I have a fantastic experience and the music is the exclamation point!

I had high hopes for this talk, because I have been enjoying a Great Courses recording about “Music and Your Brain”. But this talk seems underprepared. First, I can’t fully distinguish his four theories. Second, he does little to clarify the distinctions between them. Third, his conclusions about them seem vague and unsupported by the rest of his presentation. I’d love to hear a revised version of this talk, in which he takes the time to explain clearly what he is trying to say. I believe that he knows what he’s talking about, but I’m left with the feeling I get from reading a perfunctory assignment by a freshman in a hurry: some hints of a message, but not laid out clearly enough for me to decipher the thinking involved.

Yes I agree. Sure it makes sense that we can associate major songs with happiness & minor songs with sadness. But it is actually more complicated than this. Because there are countless of happy songs out there that are about depression & suicide. Take the Smashing Pumkins Today for example. It is about the acceptance to pass away due to taking an exit in life. And then there can also be minor songs which sound sad but are actually happy. Theres much more about this phenomen than meets the eye. Im glad you mentioned it

I doubt responses to music are entirely made by association. I think organic responses to music are natural and mostly universal. What does happen, however, is that we do make associations between the music we listen and our own personal experiences in real time. If you listened to, I dunno, Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven while you were graduating, it's likely that now everytime you listen to that song, you'll be reminded of the events that took place that the time you used to listen to it and the personal emotions you were experiencing at the time you used to listen to it, but this is not caused by the music alone, that's our memory to "blame", music is just the trigger (and so are other sensory based stimuli).

If y'all want to know the story here is it, so txt a 5 members group have a unique concept and here is it, so soobin the friend of yeonjun taehyun beomgyu and Kai, made a promise with the group to be their friends forever, but after some year or months together one day he was with the members(he's more attached to taehyun then then the others) taehyun ignored him and no one gave attention to soobin, so he stayed away from them, so soobin actually brooke the promise of them staying together forever, and he wanted to finish with the group, so the thing is that in a clear movement of the choreography they are like making a back move of the pinky promise(meaning they promised it and didn't breake it) but, soobin did the back movement but with the finger as the broke promise finger AND taehyun did it to, meaning they broke it, so one day the 4 other members commed into soobins house whitout him knowing and stayed there, but soobin and taehyun didn't talked at all, in fact soobin looked mad, and taehyun looked like he didn't trust soobin anymore, so they played and in the teasers and poster of them taehyun marked soobin as suspicious but beomgyu tried to suffocate taehyun bcs he thought taehyun was the guilty for trying to split the group appart, but no before that beomgyu actually was making strawberry smoothie and he got some on his hands, so they started playing and picking tomatoes and getting all over soobins house, the house was actually covered in tomatoe juice, in one time yeonjun was with some tomatoes on hands, but transformed into the members blood making us think he's the guilty for this, and actually he thought it was a joke but it actually was a fight, he realised it to late, talking about Kai, he marked soobin as lonely, so when they where playing Kai started to feel lonely like soobin, and actually they broke everything, in one shot whe can see the house behind them burning, (the fire represents the conflict and fight, the more it grows the more intense it gets) and in one part soobin says "save me"as if he could get all out, and everything was destroyed by one simple thing, then in one shot beomgyu is in front of taehyun and he picked a strawberry smoothie and putted ont taehyun shirt, then it cutted into a fast shot of every member looking at him but at the end soobin looked 2 second's and looked away meaning they could understand each other actually soobin didn't want to make a conflict between taehyun and him but taehyun didn't talk to him, so this all is a UT universe story there is alot more so the details are here! : one part they say "save me, can't you see me?, like in magic days I say believe me"it means they don't trust each other anymore, and now soobin doesn't feels guilty but yeonjun the one that caused nothing feels it, but soobin can see by drawing the future in the mind of their members that's why their cote is one dream, bcs they all dream the same thing, but yeonjun in Run away mv actually goes in a train where he has to close his eyes for another reality but he opens it, and in the future this will cause a big trouble, thanks for reading all this I hope you enjoyed byee!!! 🤍^^

The musical examples could have simply switched maj and min 3rds and elicited opposite emotional responses. It would seem the discussion fails in the understanding of emotion because it attempts to apply an objective frame to an inner experience.

But why tho? 🤔 I mean, how can something external to us namely soundwaves in a particular order and pattern do something with our internal emotions and even be roughly experienced the same way across the globe? Same with human vocal expression.. you could easely hear if someone (not speaking your language) is angry/happy/sad etc. I would've liked this tedx to be more in depth from an evolutionairy standpoint since myself i find it difficult to understand why on earth would this external input correspond so well with our internal emotional experiences and again, being experienced roughly the same across the globe

Why you all forget about: SOUNDS of WORDS VIBRATIONS from ELECTROMAGNETIC AIRFIELDS: GOOD OR BAD? MUSIC is HEALING: YES, BUT IF IS MIXED WITH BAD WORDS FROM DIFFERENT HARMONY OF WORDS VIBRATIONS: IT BECAME: DISEASED CLOUDS RADIATION of DEADLY FORCE ON PEOPLE BRAINS and BODIES. WORDS OF POETRY HAVE MELODY WITHIN, as "SPRING SUNNY BUTTERFLY'S DANCE", YET NONE IS TEACHING ABOUT IT> WHY?

This guy is seriously scripted and it ruins it for me. Ted talks are supposed to be just that - talks, not scripted speeches or video essays. The oration should be natural, human, easy to follow and digest, and not dense. There's no reason to have clear paragraph lines, either: ideas should flow seamlessly into each other. The essay format this guy uses causes unnatural and unpredictable studdering and voice breaks.
