I once wrote a reference for a young guy who was auditioning for Drama School and happened to mention that he had difficulty portraying 'anger'. After he did his prepared reading in front of the audition panel they asked him to do it again but this time to do it with as much anger as possible... He ended up punching a hole in the studio wall! He was accepted for the course and now, some twenty years on, is still making a good living in TV, film and theatre.

the easier emotions for me are sadness, exaggeration (sarcasm), and realistic (normal acting). the hardest emotion for me is somehow anger. i can have big arguments and be VERY angry well but i can’t be a calm angry, like a not so angry angry if you know what i mean.

It's the opposite for me I'm really good at acting calm angry but terrible at expressing like rage or outbursts one tip for you is usually like the person you're mad at is in the room keep a stern face like an angry face and sometimes And whenever they talk you can kind of use that chance to just give a rude remark or something sorry I don't know if that helped but that's what I do also when I'm mad I'm kind of sarcastic a lot so I have a deeper voice and act sarcastic yeah

@@mytynick1356 Hi! Sorry for the late response, I am signed to casting agencies in my country but never really took them seriously. Until one time, this agency called me and asked if I wanted to audition for a Netflix show. I did not book that job but it was my first audition, ever since that audition I did more auditions, signed up to multiple casting agencies etc. On my 3rd audition I booked a lead role in a TV show. It all happened very fast but my tips are to practice a lot in a mirror, practice in front of friends/family so you don’t get embarrassed practicing in front of other people and try to ‘replace yourself’ to the character you’re auditioning for. Summary: sign yourself to casting agencies and practice a lot! Do not get discouraged if you don’t book a role, because when I wrote the first comment I would have never imagined I would be cast as a lead role 7 months later. Hope this helped!

Everyone asking how to get auditions, I'll tell you how. Agencies sometimes put send you some mail informing you that you can either accept or decline their offer for an audition. Instead of waiting for that too happen, you should look up some agencies on the internet and once you find one do a lot of research on them so you're sure you wanna work for them. After that, you need to find an agent who works for the agency because that person will book you for auditions. You can choose who you wanna play and you'll audition that character. From there, you know what to do. Good luck, everybody! I'll see you in the hall of fame.

I think playing a character is not the right word but becoming that character. Thats what youre sometimes doing. You cant always be yourself, because sometimes it is just not you. Doesnt mean that youre playing a character. Youre just becoming somebody else and that means everything that you do or react to is from that persons point of view

That's interesting what your saying about playing "you". This is definitely a different approach then what I usually thought. I usually thought you had to "create" a totally different character, especially when it's a very different kind of person from you. I'm still not quite sure how you'd play "you" if the character says things and acts so differently from you though.

Hey do you have tips on playing characters that already exist? Like for example Zac Efron with Ted Bundy. Cause it’s not you, but to act realistic you have to do you.
@TheActorsAcademy
@TheActorsAcademy 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Cece Gomez, in terms of creating different characters, every time we play another version of ourselves we are creating what we would call another character. If you are a positive person for 95% of your life, but for 5% you are negative, when you change the ratio to being 30% positive 70% negative there in itself has created a new character. When we’re negative we naturally walk and talk differently, we respond to comments differently and we look at others in a way we don’t when we’re positive. It‘s still YOU, but all you did was change the ratio of negative/positive percentage. These are of course example numbers, but you can pick/switch-out which emotions/what percentages you think would fit for a character. Sometimes in our lives we might be a bit of a jokester, not all the time, but maybe for a rare 2% moment we are. If we maintain everything we do when we are joking, but we do it more often bringing that 2% to a 40% ratio, that would create a new character. If you watch J. k. Simmons in the original “Spider-Man” franchise or you watch him in “Whiplash” it is still J. K. Simmons; we can tell it’s him, but the ratio/percentage of his emotions do not stay a constant from each role. In Whiplash he enlightens his side of rage and annoyance, while in Spider-Man he highlights his arrogance more. This is why Actors on TV shows get great opportunities to show character arks through each season, because they can change/develop the percentage that is given. This is what you and most actors will be dealing with throughout your career. Of course there are exceptions to this when you are playing a real life person or a period piece, than you have different guideline to follow (Christian Bale & Daniel Day Lewis). In those circumstances you would need to highly analyze the person you are recreating to a T. This cannot only rely on your acting though (in order to get the whole character to be found believable by the audience). The tone of the film would need to be set precisely (Directors, casting, DP’s, etc.) costuming and makeup are extremely large elements to this. Remember when we playing sides of ourselves, we are talking about the emotions and the percentage that we give them. If we know roughly what our normal state is, then when we tweak the ratio we are inherently creating a new character, but it is still us. That’s what 95% of our work will be. Of course if you feel the need to drift further from yourself you could adjust your voice, accent, and/or physicality (be careful of going overboard where it appears to caricatures though). You could do that, but you don’t need to. Examples of actors being different versions of themselves (different ratio adjustments) would be Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Robert Downey Jr., Owen Wilson, Will Smith, Liam Neeson, Robert De Niro, etc. You have to remember that our goal is to create interesting and appealing complex characters. We spend our whole lives thinking we have to be someone else when you yourself are already very interesting, you don’t need to try and recreate anything. Robert De Niro’s most popular quote is “you don’t need to do anything.” For example if you are 25 years old you have lived 25 years of your own personal life that nobody knows anything about and your 25 years is completely different from someone else’s. If we could have books written about our entire lives, they’d be the most interesting books on the planet. You already have everything you need and you don’t need to try and find it somewhere else, no character will be more interesting than you. This is why Meryl Streep’s quote is so important when she says “all we are doing is playing different versions of ourselves.” Hope this all makes sense Cheers

The thing I have a problem with is crying on cue like I can cry by myself on cue but I can't do it in front of other people and so that's the problem I think I'm good at it and then I go to audition and I actually suck I also have a really hard time expressing rage to like I've never really had a breakout I don't really express my emotions a lot so I feel like whenever I try to express rage for acting it feels really awkward like I don't know how to move my face or how to speak or anything I know what it's supposed to look like but I just can't do it

One of the important things to remember is that Disney is a kids/young teens platform and there have been many solidified example towards how the acting should be. So remembering that Disney is not for the adult who’s watching a series on HBO is important. Ultimately for Disney, you should be more positive and upbeat; less towards the negative. Think about it this way, you’re playing within a bandwidth, you can’t go too far down or sometimes even too far up (for disney). Still aim towards keeping it realistic, but be your realistic self when you’re happy, energetic, and in a positive mood. Combined this with, you may consider adding a mixture of the theater towards your acting where everything is over the top (depending on what is happening in the scene). If the scene is looking for more energy, I’d suggest search for a happy medium between realistic and theater acting, while keeping the scene light, positive, and upbeat. Of course not all scenes will be the same and you may need to adjust and change any of these points accordingly, but if we’re basing our standpoint off of what is currently on Disney channel, these points are important to remember. Hope this helps :)

The Actors Academy It really did help. Thank you for your requests and comments. My audition scene is a scene where an older brother is telling his baby sister to ask Dad instead of Mom when asking for permission to do something. And then Dad hears through the baby monitor and I yell, “Baby monitor! Stupid technology!” That line is the hardest for me because I know I have to be hyper realistic and positive but angry at the same time.

From what you just said, I wouldn’t see the character as being ‘angry’ in this moment. Maybe annoyed or potentially afraid of getting in trouble, but I wouldn’t say he is angry. If anger is what you’ve set on to be the answer though and you’re having a hard time getting there, than look up other Disney actors for references. For example the brother in Hannah Montana or the brother in Wizards of Waverley Place have had moments when they played many moments of Disney versions of anger, so if this is the standpoint you will be sticking with, than use these actors as references to get an idea on how to play it. Hope that helps!
