When did 5.1 become lossy format? especially when some titles come in that discrete channel format.

It's not about the number of supported channels it's about the way the information is compressed. Dolby Digital 5.1 is a lossy format because there is some audio information that is thrown away during the compression step. Whereas Dolby True HD is lossless because no information is thrown away during compression. Two quick notes about the information that is "thrown away", 1. Typically done to save disc space. 2. The engineers target information that can't be heard, like stuff outside of human hearing (above 20kHz for example), so it sounds good but technically some recorded information is missing from a lossy format.

Your processor sounds great! I love to hear about older gear working faithfully today. 👍🏾😀 It depends on your setup, but my short answer is yes. I’m assuming it doesn’t pass through Full HD (1080p) video, so you’re missing that plus 4k uhd with HDR and the latest lossless formats like Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio. If you’re planning to upgrade your gear to a 4k setup then it’s probably time to think about a new processor but if you’re not and you’re happy with your system keep using it! 😁

Is emotiva T2+/T3+ worth the upgrade vs Polk R700? And what about the JBL 698 and HDI-3600/3800? Which direction should I aim for if I'm looking for warmth yet dynamic and forwardness and detail for music and movies? I currently have RP280f

I haven’t tried the Polk or the 698. Based on your criteria I would say the HDI line if you really like your 280f or the T2+ if want something different.
