Excellent film. Seen it three times so far and grew to appreaciate it more each time.

I think this film is perhaps slightly less about loss and more about both abandonment and the desperate lengths one might go to to experience belonging.

Of all the movies I've seen in the past 15 years, this one has stayed me with me the longest. It haunts me. The atmosphere it creates is overwhelming, and the actors give such restrained intensity to their performances.

Ehh, I think this movie is more about loneliness and the yearning to belong. I don't think the figure represents a father figure to her, but a friend or a person she belongs to in a sense. Kat kills to make the figure stay, so when she says "Don't go" in the end, she is begging the figure not to leave because she doesn't want to be alone again. Then she returns years later and realizes the furnace isn't burning anymore and there's no way to make the figure, whom she saw as a companion, come back anymore.

Very enjoyable commentary - I loved your highlighting of the rituals paralleled between Kat and Older Kat/Joan, and the "diminishing returns" of trying to find that which is lost.

I remember watching this originally when you had only 3 or 4 videos uploaded. Watching a great video about one of my favorite movies, going to your channel, and seeing your first video was about Deftones, my favorite band, was surreal. In other words, I think you have great taste in media!

Interesting take on the movie about it representing the idea that you can't go home again. I saw it a little more broadly about loneliness both both ideas have overlaping themes. I feel this movie needs more love as most people I know have no idea this film exists. Hope your video gets a few more eyes on it.

I had the impression that the parents would murder the stand-in for their daughter upon completing the road trip and that she preempted such a fate with her own ritualistic killing.

That's certainly one interpretation. Not one I see, personally, but still plausible.

Reminds me so much of how it is when a girl is groomed by someone and the emotional journey of her realizing he was just using her.
@keith67955 ай бұрын
Wow…I was close with a couple girls who had that happen in their past…it was heartbreaking. I never thought of this film that way, but I think you could interpret it that way. Both the people I knew who went through that as girls had no real parents, like Kat.

she picked the demon thing as father figure after mr Gordon told her she cannot live there. And Rose was cold with her. She felt alienated and acted on it. I would like to believe The demon is her dark side and has a lot in line with psychopathy behaviours. Her dark side kept her going through life and when she scaped asylum she was cured therefore the demon wasn't there. She had to face her loneliness in a healthy way.

The demon may have killed her parents, maybe it didn't. It did show her the accident in the dream to create an opening for it to possess her. Whether the demon exists or not is not crucial to the story, but some stuff would be hard to explain otherwise. How else did Kat see the wrecked car other than it's a hell of a coincidence, and who does she see in the dream? She also has that weird smile when the priest says he won't be around, levitates and uses a creepy voice on the nun at one point.

I feel like the demon dog rabbit thing could also be a metaphor for an abusive father. Even though he ruins her, abuses her, leaves her psychologically warped and broken, breaks her, and manipulates her into committing evil, she still loves him because of the fact that he is her "dad." Maybe that's out in left field, but it was just a feeling I got. I feel like there is also a message about male codependence in general, with Rose depending on her boyfriend for her security and happiness although he might not be good for her (i.e. having unprotected sex, lying to her parents and the school..)

1. If you watch the last 3-5 seconds of the film her eyes fix on something on the horizon right before the cut signifying or at least opening up the possibility that perhaps she sees the figure again - youll see her eyes begin to open up (as when watching it in the room behind the girl) 2. I was under the impression her parents were already dead... Thats why she knew they werent coming at the beginning and her listless state/haunting dreams of the car wreck.... 3. that phone call after she pukes the first time in the office after she refuses to pray is the only thing to make no sense to me.... Why would he come with a sheriff just for saying the c word? Or why would they get a call before anything happened....
@davidsantacarla3 жыл бұрын
She puked when she was older because she wasn’t having the same bliss she had when the demon filled her with joy as she killed her school mates and the two school administrators. Since it was her killing alone, she was overwhelmed with adrenaline which usually results in vomit.
