I never thought of that before. That's actually an amazing analysis. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if that's what Dana was going for there. Though, I think it's more male isekai protagonist (new and old) vs female modern ones. As someone who read the first John Carter of Mars book, I think that's an apt way to describe him. He's a strong man, gifted with the ability to "jump good" when he reaches that planet (along with telepathy for some reason), which pretty much allows him to power through the plot with no effort and becomes the king of Mars by taking power for himself. He constantly boasts about how strong, handsome and awesome he is like a z list Gaston. Add in the fact that he's a Confederate General, and is a racist asshole, even if he tries to deny it, and would've easily could've been the villain instead of the hero in a modern version of the tale. John Carter influenced a lot of genres, even indirectly, including modern isekai male leads. Even in modern anime they tend to be like that as well due to that adding to the wish fulfillment fantasy on its audience of teenaged boys. Think Kirito, Ainz Ooal Gown, Sora or Diablo. (Though there are exceptions like Naofumi, Subaru and Slime-kun.) Female isekai leads tend to work harder and have to earn that. In the cases of Luz and older isekai female heroines like Alice and Dorthy, have to decide if they want to go home or not.

Okay, so hear me out: Belos may be a human who tried to give himself a bile sack thanks to experimenting with Palismans-he succeeded, but that gave him that curse. OR so somewhat the opposite-he’s an Isles native who became somewhat obsessed with the human realm thanks to it having no wild magic or something and tried to get rid of his bile sack. Either way, the reason he wants to unite the Isles with the Human Realm might be that it would allow the two halves of him to stop fighting and he would no longer have his affliction.

One of the things I noticed about Belos and his curse, is how Hunter tries to defend his actions and "what the curse makes him do", this could be interpreted as an allegory for mental illness, and how there's no justification for being an Abusive Caretaker. We can see this with Eda and Belos, both have a "curse", but Eda would never dream of hurting Luz, while Belos guilts Hunter into thinking that if he hurts him, then it was Hunter's fault, since Belos can't "control himself" bc of his curse. Eda takes care of her curse, taking it easy on herself and acknowledging her limits, proving that you can live with a curse without being a danger to yourself or others, but Belos won't do this.
@fefek12 жыл бұрын
Belos/Philip's curse is quite diffrent. He needs to murder palismen to survive and yea.... We'll get more explanation for his behavior once we see the backstory of him/his brother, I'm assuming his brother died somehow related to wild magic (and also belos got cursed somehow related to wild magic) which made him hate wild magic and seek revange which made him a bad person over time
@nickioleary85773 жыл бұрын
Maybe having the Palismen is supposed to be like an unhealthy coping mechanism? I dunno, I used have one for my misophonia, but I never used it unless it starting acting up. Maybe that’s why Belos seems to only take a palisman when the curse starts to become active or cause immediate problems. Still doesn’t explain why he didn’t just tell Lilith to store Owlbert with the other palisman reserves though, so maybe not

Very good analysis here on Belos I stated before that I think the writers made the right choice in making Belos look kinda handsome without his mask on. Sure,he's not Brad Pitt or Chris Hemsworth and the green scar is distracting but put some foundation on and he'll look even better. As for his "parenting" skills... if he doesn't own up,change for better,apologize to Hunter,take a parenting class,read books on parenting or (if they exist in the Boiling Isles) go to family therapy,Eda or Camila or even Gwen better adopt Hunter because if even a blind man can tell that Hunter IS NOT safe with Belos. Belos can claim "the curse made me do it" or "I had a bad day" or "I'm stressed out from ruling this government" as much as he likes. In the end,someone in the Royal Family has to act like an adult and it clearly isn't Belos. I don't care what time period he grew up because here and now, Belos is supposed to be an adult. Not only is he supposed to be the mature one but last time I checked,adults are supposed to own up to their bad decisions and change for the better. Grimwalker or not, Hunter is a part of his family. Personally,I think the notch in Hunter's ear is similar to the one on Belos' ear so there's a chance that it is just something that is hereditary more than it is a scar. Plus, Belos' hair is similar in color but the styles are different slightly so maybe they really are related; the different noses and hair is kind of an obvious sign that Hunter is not a Grimwalker clone of Belos himself. Nothing he says will excuse his abuse towards Hunter. Hunter wants his uncle to get better from his curse and Belos is a coward and a bully for shutting Hunter down and threatening him the way he does. Hunter unconditionally loves his uncle and Belos is taking advantage of that; he doesn't deserve Hunter. I probably said this before but, I can't wait for Eda, Luz,Lilith,Gwen, Camila or anyone to kick Belos' British* ass. (*I'm aware that Matthew Rhys is Welsh but, I think you get the point.) As a villain,he's intriguing,scary yet handsome without his mask and I wanna know more about. As parental figure, he'd better shape up or else Harpy Eda will rearrange his spine.

Considering the implications with hunter being a grimwalker (a clone) and that his relationship to belos as nephew/uncle. I think its way more likely belos is meant to be philip himself then a descendent or anything. Philip's brother is identical to hunter outside of his ears and red eyes ( the red eyes are implied to be a grimwalker thing), so if he cloned his brother then yeah.....technically in a weird way that makes hunter his bio nephew. Also makes far more sense narrative wise because the brother is hinted to be rascal's original owner and cardinals represent dead family members watching over you. So hunter having rascal around is equivalent to almost having the brother (whose technically his father) watching over him. Its also this, if belos was literally any other guy, just some dude we don't know, then really.....its not gonna matter to luz or anyone on the good side. But if he's philip, someone luz knows and trusted to help her, that breaks her world, because philip never made it home and he went from being this adventurer like her to well....belos. Even belos's ears, they're the tiniest ears on the show, they don't look natural and it seems far more likely they were cropped from their original round shape. There's more then just this, like the parallels between the brothers, and clawthorne sisters, that are being implied (cursed younger sibling, older strict sibling). The Implications that philip became belos, that something happened with his brother, and that he created hunter from his brother is being very well implied and whether obvious or not, is being very well hinted throughout the show. Its not confirmed, but it makes way more sense narrative wise then to set up a descendent character for this Seeing philip turn from a curious young man into THIS could be genuinely sad and fascinating and it would explain so much surrounding him.

There are two moments that totally sold Belos as a threat to me. The first is when the trio are in the relic room and are talking about how they plan to grab the healing hat, help Eda and bring it back before anyone knows its gone. The second after they say this, Belos' voice calls out in a calm and sibilant "I will know." It was just chilling! He has no physical presence in the scene, but you can tell that everyone in that room feels his gaze and the power behind it. Second was when Luz confronts him and tries to threaten him with her ice. He doesn't even really react to it, he just sits there for a second. When he does decide to react, he doesn't lash out with anger at this upstart human trying to threaten him; no, he dissolves and reforms behind Luz and simply says: "OK, I'll play." and then proceeds to show Luz why he is not a man to mess with. Just, damn man!

The owl house crew have taken a very Tolkien's way of revealing information in the show purticuly when Belos is involved where in for every question answered 5 to 10 more arise. Also I don't believe that that's the actual heart of the titan nor bile sack either as one the titan is massive to the point where even if the heart decreases in size do to decomposition it would still take up the size of the entire castle or more and same goes for the bile sack I think it's just the heart of a giant that's used as a trophy and for intimidation as Belos seems to be a bit theatrical when in the presence of normal people.

I've been thinking about Belos' curse and a few things are starting to come together. Putting aside the controversy over who Belos actually is for the moment (Phillip, his brother, or the witch who brought them to the Boiling Isles?) , We have seen the notes on how to create something called a Grimwalker. Also remember the episode "Once Upon a Switch"? A lot of folks believe that either Belos or Hunter are grimwalkers (or that both are) and there is some merit to that idea. What if Belos is, indeed a grimwalker and whoever he really is used Body Swap magic to inhabit said grimwalker to prolong his life. We saw that Eda had no magic of her own while in King's body and was only able to swap back by using Owlbert, so no matter who Belos is, he is in a body with no innate magic of its own. How he got there may yet be revealed, but the point I'm meandering toward is that he has probably been in that body a long time and it looks like it is getting old. What happens when a grimwalker ages? We do not know, but perhaps it start decaying into the mush we see Belos is becoming. This also means he is a very desperate person at this point, hoping to hold out until the Day of Unity. Stay tuned!

I think belos may actually a human his ears are significantly smaller than any other whitch even the adult one it almost looks like he chopped his ear in half so he would look more like one of them (Edit):I'm like 99% sure of this now that "elsewhere and elsewhen" has come out the show basicly flat out showed us that he is) (Edit 2):so it has been fully conformed in hollow mind(which was a very traumatic episode)that he is actually a human so yay I was right before it was conformed!

Just want to say that there are cases where people have died from withdrawals by quitting cold turkey. I don't remember all the details but I think in some cases they have a fatal heart attack from it or something. So if they are likening his affliction to addiction, it would still make sense that he can't stop feeding it at this point (and honestly the way he behaves actually does very much remind me of how a former roommate of mine who was an alcoholic and would get very angry and violent when he drank or was going through hard withdrawals). A lot of how you described him still holds up even now with more screentime from him and the series getting closer to the end. Honestly he's only become more fascinating and terrifying as the show's gone on.

I still think he's half human half witch. Maybe he was a little evil as a child, so his father decided he was too dangerous for the human realm, so he sent him back. Then Belos was rejected by his mother or maybe she was killed along with Hunter's parents, so he came to the conclusion that magic was the problem so he decided to limit it. He has a staff because it helps him with the most powerful spells because he isn't as strong as full witches. And he's trying to create a door because he's mad at humans, thinks they're weak because of his father. Also, in an attempt to become strong, maybe he cursed himself, and he keeps it at bay with the palisman juices.

In terms of mannerisms and demeanor, my closest comparison to Belos is Horde Prime from She-Ra with his cult like set up and authoritarian regime. Currently my guess for why he's so inactive is a mix how if he did get more active it would make his own coven look less effective if he has too do all the work, and because his curse makes it too dangerous. His authoritarian regime isn't going to last long if everyone sees how vulnerable he is.

I wonder if there is something about the Clawthorn carved Palasmin that makes it impossible for Belos to consume. After all she orders Owlbert to be destroyed not stored or just consumed right away and we know from Gus and Willow from (ok I forgot the episode name but it's the one where Bat Queen put Luz on a rigged trial for scaring and hiding Owlbert) one of them mentioned that Owlbert was very powerful. So that should have made eating him or saving him for a special occasion like a rare treat more tempting not less. And Lilith was the only one in the Emperor's Coven allowed to have a Palasmin staff when we learned from Steve and Hunter's words in Hunting Palasmin that Helps likes to collect everyone's Palamins and save them for Belos to eat. And it's been speculated that Caleb was married to and had kids with Gwen's great grandmother. And yet when Belos killed Caleb he didn't eat Flap Jack and he certainly knew of his existence because he recognized him in Hunter's hands right away. I don't know what could be different about them but it's weird these connections to Palasmin Belos had a chance to devour but doesn't.

Here's my guess as to what belos actually is, he's the human version of eda, while philip was lilith. So 2 humans fall into the boiling isles, one, philip, starts doing magic the "proper" way, categorizing and inventing portals and stuff, bringing science to magic, meanwhile belos is just cheating and stealing, eventually getting cursed by the beast lady in the robe, accidentally killing philip in a fit. Now he needs the day of unity to resurrect his bro in hunter's clone body and using the coven system as a twisted version if making sure they don't repeat his mistake

In the new 12 episode it seems like Belos, like Philip, consumes palismans to live longer

Maybe belos actually wants to get rid of magic. Maybe after he went to the human realm and saw how the world without magic looked like. He wanted to live in that world thats why he wants to merge the human realm and destroy magic because the magic made his world so diffrent from the beautifull human realm

I really think belos is base off a windago since his monster form look more humanoid and him consuming Palisman is like what they said how a windago consume human flesh and how he was so greedy to become the hero is like him letting his greed taking over

You know who Belos reminds me of? The Masked Man from Scooby Doo Monsters Unleashed. Hear me out. I'm not just saying this because they both have menacing designs with masks. They both have insane amounts of power that seem like magic at first but when you get down to it, they are both simply hyper-intelligent and use science to create their own magic. In Belos's case, it's his staff and portal. In the Masked Man's case, it's his monster machine. They also both use propaganda to send the public after the heroes. Belos did this through the use of wanted posters and his police force. The Masked Man did this through manipulation and fearmongering. The main difference between the two is Belos is a symbol of self-righteous order and the Masked Man is a symbol of revenge and anarchy, with this being reflected in Belos's color scheme of gold and white and the Masked Man's scheme of silver and black. I just really wanted to discuss this because these two are so intimidating and awesome.

SPOILER no we haven’t seen the worst he tried to committee mass genocide also hunter is a clone 17…. The 17th clone holy smokes and on top of that we find out some of the ways he killed the past clones for being “un perfect” also he is a witch hunter general so yes he is a big bad guy.

Considering we'll probably dive deeper into his backstory soon, we'll have to see once we understand more of what happened to him. It won't change anything, but it may give people a better understanding of why he's like this.
