Amidst the turn of the 19th century, the dragon throne of the Qing Dynasty's Imperial City would come under the control of emperor Guangxu, first reformist emperor in a world of conservatism. His reign, crippled by Empress Dowager Cixi, would see the events of the First Sino-Japanese War, Hundred Days Reform, and Boxer Rebellion.

based on this and the Cixi video, i feel Guangxu's reign feels like the period of Imperial China where Cixi made her most grave mistakes. She championed reform much of her rule and solidified her grip on power. But when Guangxu tried to reform more, she feared losing her power and chose to cling on to it ultimately at China's expense.
@sarahlachman1349
@sarahlachman1349 12 күн бұрын
This was likely because Ci'an was no longer around and able to moderate her and keep her in check. Given her actions l Cixi was good at manipulating different factions for her own gain. This is why she embraced the forigners when it was clear they were the ones clearly in power, backing the reformers when it passified the rebellions, and backing the conservatives when reform threatened her power. It was all about her, never about China, or anyone else, they were all pawns to the very end.

It is always fascinating to see black and white pictures of China during the Qing Dynasty. It is a very much seeing the ancient world, set in the modern-era that is captured by a camera. The 2,000+ year old Imperial China has only ended 108 years ago. That is very recent indeed.

Wasn't this dynasty arguably a mongol successor state with the Han forming the lowest class within their own former empire? The 2k+ history of Chinese affairs being limited to east asian and their interactions with eurasian steppe nomads came to an end, though that is something that arguably happened to most people in the world at that time period, including vast populations of Europe (e.g. the 2k+ structure of German tribes collaborating in a Thing (german: Tag) to deal with outside forces ("welsch" people) but being otherwise fiercely independent and in a constant state of inter tribal warfare also only came to an end in 1871 with the formation of the second German empire). I guess the long riples of the French Revolution changed millenia old systems directly and indirectly by a domino effect all over the world during the long 19th century

After watching this, I belive that Emperor Guangxu was the last hope of the Qing dynasty. He could see the flaws and the weakness of the conservative ways, and that China must modernize in order to continue its existence. Furthermore, in my view, one of the major causes for China's defeat in the war against Japan, was Cixi's abuse of power and pilfering of the national treasury. And the war with Japan proves that. China lost every battle, both on land and sea, because of massive corruption within the Imperial court, which in turn undermined both the Chinese army and navy.

Guangxu's behavior during the war showed him clearly incapable of ruling the Empire. His incredible indecisiveness and lack of relevant education in modern statecraft become apparent. He saw no reason to fund the army and navy resulting in its total defeat at the hands of Japan. Kang Youwei's reform program were dangerous for the Dynasty and would likely resulted in its collapse much faster.

It's interesting to wonder what would have happened if Yuan Shikai hadn't betrayed Guangxu and instead had supported him in the Wuxu coup in 1898. Yuan shikai likely could have secured the support of other provincial leaders if he were to oppose the conservative faction's coup - these leaders were willing to disobey Cixi's order 2 years later during the Boxer Rebellion. Perhaps Yuan Shikai's choice was the real nail in the coffin for the Qing dynasty.

Would not have made that much difference. The issue is the core inertia against change of the whole country. Look at Li Hongzhang, who famously made fun of Ito Hirobumi about him dressed in western clothing. And Li was the most western leaning politician in his day. Even today, China is clinging onto the old ways...
@BygoneChina
@BygoneChina 3 жыл бұрын
@@ruleoftwo6174 True, but if the Wuxu coup had been a success, there would have been lots of other consequences that are hard to predict. The Boxer Rebellion would likely not have occurred (as the Qing wouldn't have sided with the Boxers), which would also mean that the 8 nation alliance invasion never would have taken place. Additionally, if the coup meant that the Qing forces were in a better state, then it is possible that they would have had more power to put down the resistance movements of the early 20th century, such as the Wuchang Uprising.

I think the fall of the Qing Dynasty lies in the hands of the western imperialist countries and Japan...they were like vultures picking apart and bullying a nation that was technologically behind in warfare...for years some of the western nations kept funneling opium into China to weaken the people, waiting for the opportunity to force China to sign unfair treaties like handing over Hong Kong and Macau...the ports are the life-blood of a country because they are essential for commerce and trade. I think if it wasn't for WWI and WWII with some of the countries like Germany and Japan overstepping their boundaries and committing some of the worst atrocities of the 20th century in the Holocaust and the Rape of Nanking, China would be a different country, maybe more divisive and not as unified.

I hope you gonna cover emperor Pu Yi as well, but anyways this has been one of the most interesting empires I have ever look up into; an empire that had conquered vast lands but, as most empires do, be mainly made up of their local ethnic groups but yet their conquerors still hold such cultural influence. Additionally, it was the end of an old belief of a right to rule which I believed dated back to the Zhou dynasty from 1000 BC's (if I'm right but feel free to correct me) and its fascinating how it fell into chaos for several long years. This has been an absolutely amazing story and journey to go through.

I also very much appreciated your unbiased view of history. You recounted history as it happened, without any attempt at propaganda or embellishment. Guangxu was not innocent. His followers such as Kang Youwei planned a coup to kill Cixi Guangxu just ignored this potential crime and tolerated Kang's plan. That is why Cixi hated him so much.

Enjoy your channel and a big fan for a while, but one thing I have noticed is you have always left out Tibet in the maps in all the dynasties, I am really interested in why that is so.
@History_of_China
@History_of_China 3 жыл бұрын
For the Qing era, Tibet was never really annexed (contrarily to regions like Qinghai). There was always a regent (and later Dalai Lamas) to officially handle the state. However, Qing officials called Amban (or Angbang in Chinese) overlooked his activities. Tibet was therefore more of a protectorate, hence why I display it in a lighter colour in my maps.

Thanks for your work. I’m interested in learning what happened to the loyalists after the Revolution. Did they stay in China or did they migrated? Massively? Thanks!
@History_of_China
@History_of_China 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed! Most Qing loyalists stayed in China, but this minority rapidly died out within the first years of the Republic, as they were perceived as ridiculous and backward-looking. Virtually only members of the close imperial family remained loyalists, forming Puyi's "court in exile". I think some may have moved to Japan.

A note for your future videos: the font you chose for some of the Chinese characters are different within the same name, please be mindful of that. You can tell because some of them are serifs, and other fonts have fixed weight. (some examples of this at 13:22 and 13:47)

What if Empress cixi died before she could stop her own nephew. I think Guanxu would have done more reform to china. Maybe The qing dyanaty could still exist if The coup never happened. I believe that maybe Guanxu emperor and empress longyu would have a child maybe Guanxu could have said that woman could take the throne and her consort a grand-prince. In 1908 Guanxu would die and his 3 year old daughter would be Empress Xiajung and Empress longyu her regent. During WW1 The young Empress would marry a Duke calldes Sunjin and would be Grand-Prince Sunjin. Xiajung in 1921 would have her 1st child, Prince Li. Empress Longyu would die in 1922 from a Unkown Cancer. Xiajung reigh would last from 1908-1939 In 1939 she died of a stroke while eating super. Prince Li became emperor Chenzhou. His reigh was from 1939-1953. In 1941 The qing dyansty Would Decarle War on the empire of Japan. China would won and got Jouahsuai lsland from Japan in 1946. In 1953, The emperor all of a sudden died from a hunting accident were he was accidentally shot in the chest. His 2nd son would become Emperor Chaozhong. The Jin Riot in 1954 callded for a Parliament and the emperor a powerless figure. He was forced to sigh the Act of 1955 and a Parliament was founded. Chaozhong reigh was from 1953-1978.

cixi got too power hungry…but also because tongzhi was kind of weak and died young, maybe if he was more intellectual, cixi would have been willing to delegate power to his son? plus ci’an died a lot of chinese people blame cixi, but i feel the REAL BLAME lies in the mindset of chinese culture = tradition, convservatism, isolationism, pride, etc. this is what really held china back during the reign of jiaqing, daoguang = if they were more open-minded to more ideas, china could have reformed MUCH EARLIER even before the guangxu emperor 但当然了,我们是中国人,我们不吃这一套

Ok, that story about the well is total bs, no girl, I don’t care how skinny, could’ve ACCIDENTALLY fallen into that well. You'd have to be stuffed, with a pole, and several bones are gonna get broken. I doubt the cruelest eunuch could even get a kid into that well-whole-without pulling out the wood chipper. The "well" is barely 6in diameter. Anyone who actually sees it would never believe a story about a woman "falling" into that well. #historyofchina

The Japanese pay attention to every detail. Hence given the same Navy, the Japanese will train in tactics. The Chinese will neglect these. This is the heart of understanding how a deadly virus leaked from a Chinese lab. The French who helped build the lab voiced safety concerns and were kicked out of China. We now see the deadly result.
