In the end, I think the medium is dominating the message. Using maps and screen drawing means that a particular view of the Empires dominates (who was where), at the expense of a range of other issues, history, politics, culture, religion... So an interesting, but very partial picture is given.

Kahn also overestimates the linguistic homogeneity of countries like Italy and Spain, and underestimates the religious and cultural diversity, especially in the Balkans. By using a 1914 map of the Ottoman Empire, he underplays the fact that many of the Balkan countries (Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia) had only recently become independent from the Ottoman Empire.

The video should point out that modern western Poland and Polish coastline was majority German speaking at the time and had long been so. The populations of Germans and Poles changed after WWII when German were expelled across the Oder and Poles expelled from modern day Ukraine, Belarus, and Lithuania to make way for Belarusian, Ukrainian and Russian settlers and sent to former German lands that had been German for a long time. This was to push the borders of Poland and Germany as far west as possible according to Stalin's plans.

Yup, all to take more and more land from other countries illegally. Russia should have went back to its borders before WWII, so should have Germany's and Poland's and the others also.

As an educator I regret the comments from people who have fanatical biases and am sorry that someone who has an education above seventh grade can't distinguish between Russia and Prussia. I don't think I would allow comments if I were doing these videos. Legitimate questioning would be welcome,. I have no time for vituperative ignorance.

There are Jewish Arabs, Arab does not equate to Muslim. The Israelis may have had their extreme elements, but you also have yours. The bulk of the Israeli population came to coexist, but animosity between the groups on both sides brought us to the unfortunate situation we have now. I do understand your stance on this, I really do, although I cannot feel empathy because I have not truly lived within the situation.

Not just the borders were different in 1914, so was the language map. Many Eastern German provinces that are now part of Poland were German speaking then. That ended after WW 2 when the German population departed and was replaced by Poles.

The German Empire was only just then starting. It wasn't that long before then that Prussia was absorbed into it. They did already have two large territories in Africa, which made them an Empire. Also Croats and Serbs are the same LINGUISTIC background. Their languages are really closely related, and their ethnic backgrounds are very close. Despite what either group would say, genetically they're pretty similar(like Spaniards or Portuguese). The main difference is/was religion.

There was a feudal system. The ottomans, as conquerers, owned the lands, whereby the arabs who worked on the lands and paid taxes, were sitting on them. The ottomans sold the lands and the arabs had to go. Then in 1947, the arab states attacked the young Jewish state and failed miserably. many Palestinians fled out of fear without seeing a single jewish soldier. Many of them are still living in camps in other Arab countries without rights, used as a tool against Israel.

Re. the old and often repeated and misinterpreted saying of "winners writing history": of course this has been countered by many old adages as expressed in the quotes of wise men/women over time. Unfortunately the overwhelming majority of human beings are easily steered by triggering their emotions. "Heuristics" (or "mental short cuts") then do a large share of *establishing a narrative.* Our leaders play "3d chess", but have convinced the overwhelming majority of us "commoners" to play 2d checkers. Because their "3d chess" is all about *geopolitics* (politics in times of peace/ *grand strategy* (strategies in times of crisis/wars). The reality/status quo around 1900: A geographical advantage (island status) gave Britain (unlike land powers) the ability to choose alliances without consequences, as long as she had an overpowering navy which could ward of invasions. London was in the lucky geographical position (island) to be able to simply shift her temporary alliances (aka "favoritism") back and forth. During peace times: "friends" one day, "rivals" the next. During war: "ally" in one war, "enemy" in the next war. Note: the cogs in this clockworks tick almost imperceptually slowly. Most people simply don't care or don't notice. Anyway... London thus "balanced powers". By own confession: hop on "the scale" here one time, hop on another side another. Her army was always kept small in times of peace, and rapidly "boosted" in times of war, and thrown in on the side of the weaker power/country/alliance. Her navy was *always* the major military investment (irrelevant of war or peace) to keep enemies at bay. Worked well up to WW2, when a sudden technological boost (aviation/nukes) meant that that age-old strategy was no longer effective. Land powers did not have this advantage of being able to distance themselves from neighbors. Since (logically) they could be invaded much simpler, especially if such countries/alliances had long borders. Land forces are far simpler to "boost" for invading neighbors (aka "mobilization"), than to rapidly increase a navy to invade GB which already had the advantage of an overpowering navy in peacetime. In a nutshell: You can stick a gun into the hand of a factory worker or farmer overnight, and have a million+ army within a few days, but you can't conjure a massive navy out of a sleeve in the same time. *Up to WW1, it was geography which gave London the upper hand re. "choice".* From the turn of the century, gaining rapid momentum after WW1, the *geographical advantage* which London enjoyed for around a hundred years, shifted rapidly to the USA. After 1945 the USA had the geographical advantage, the technological edge, the overwhelming economic power, the inancial leverage = political leverage, the military might (now including the advantage of the largest navy) to simply do what it wanted, and have the "leverage" re. deals made, and the advantage to be able to simply walk away without having to fear consequences (same as London did until WW1). A rather simple exercise in "who rules the world"...
@Siegbert8511 жыл бұрын
Prussia wasn't "eaten" by Germany. It rather recreated the German Empire with the Prussian king being the emperor. Prussia existed until 1945 when it was dissolved by the Allies.

Not even french like you said because those parts are now part of Belgium and they still speak german now a days.

Let's not forget what happened to the Armenians and Ottoman Jews, let alone the Jews who survived WWII. Regardless, they weren't simply killed or thrown out of their homes; they fled because they thought they would be. However, the Israelis came with no plans to do so; why do you think it was so hard for them to repel the attacks that came after they settled? They had no weapons in the beginning, jut old British ones that they were given prior to their settlement. Again, a little of both.

In the north of Poland they don't speak German anymore because all Germans were driven out because of the wars. Before the war it was Prussia and it was a very very important part of Germany that had big influence on the culture today.
