I like how in this episode the CEO of DHL had “no idea” there were so many underpaid contractors with no employment protections working for his company. And that the “prize” for working so hard was basic employment rights.

Truth is once businesses get large enough it's easy for employees to slip into positions that actually go against the company's unwritten management policies largely so because they are unwritten and usually a large disconnect between upper management and middle management results on middle management making executive decisions on behalf of the business. Which in large part are mainly profit based decision making rather then fairness.

What we have here is a CEO of a company that underpays a bunch of their workers, who then goes on TV to show us that he is a great guy and has decided to pay just one of those workers a better wage. It makes the CEO feel good about himself, that one worker feels appreciated, and it's great marketing for the company and the CEO, but the company still underpays thousands of other workers.

I’m an engineer and I worked for DHL as a delivery services office (van driver) for 3 years when I arrived in Australia. I didn’t have Australian references and was difficult to get a job as engineer. I worked hard, I delivered more than any other driver because I was planning my deliveries using my engineering knowledge. I was asked to present ideas to reduce costs and I presented a project to use electric vans using solar panel in our roof depot. Also, using incentives from the government. I contacted a company based in UK to get the electric vans to be used in Perth. I did all that was on my hands to get promoted but I was never get promoted, my boss just wanted me to be a van driver even though I said to him I can help DHL with my knowledge of engineering and my studies in logistics. I had to resign when I got an opportunity. This happen in 2009. I work now as engineer in a different company but I would have liked to get an opportunity in DHL. I just wanted to share this with you guys. Have a nice day and God bless all of you . Happy Easter.

A história dele me emocionou bastante!

@@deleqtronica8733 wow he paid 200pound for his ticket, and offered him basic employment, what a legend, we should make him a statue as remembrance, just think about how much worth Marcelo brings in, compared to what he got offered, bro got scammed and CEO did it with a smile on his face, this is incredible.

It's incredible to be recognized for your hard work like this by people you typically never see. I wish things like this were more common, not just higher ups checking in on you, but rewarding outstanding service or doing what needs to be done with poor service.

I worked for five guys for so many years and their ceos/founders where still very hands on and involved with the average worker. I worked in a UK one, and one of them came over and visited the UK restaurants. A guy that worked in same restaurant as me, won a competition and had an all expenses trip to America and met them. He even went to a shooting range with one of them.

This is actually such a sad and cynic episode. Having people who do hard an honest work on a regular employment contract should be the norm and not some random act of kindness. This is not a special gift, it is just something that looks special because of the terrible conditions we have allowed to develop in the delivery industry and quite a few other sectors. DHL is slightly better than most of their competitors in that regard, but they still are very much a part of the problem and employ plenty of subcontractors knowing full well about the terrible conditions they have to work under.

This show generally seems like complete bullshit to me. Almost every large corporation treats low level employees like meat. Then these CEOs come on acting all big hearted, punishing cold blooded location managers for doing the very things they look for when hiring them, and acting like they care about peons they kick to the curb daily for nothing. Yeah Im calling BS on this, its all done for PR for the company and the next day its business as usual.
