Tracy and April are doing great! I remember when I was helping my mom declutter. She had an enormous amount of nice things. (But she was overwhelmed, understandably). But when I color coded all the shoes or put all the scarves together, then she was able to say "oh I have 18 pairs of beige shoes, now that I see this category put together I'm just going to choose the best ones". She also saw she had 45 blue scarves and realized some were better than others. Categorizing really helps before any declutter, it's true! And my mom would get easily overwhelmed before that and walk away. But this worked best! And somehow she got through her whole house and feels a lot better now. It just takes some faith, time and commitment. :)

I realized the same when I colorcoded my clothes - I had 5 or 6 beige wool pullovers. Certainly I didn't need any more of that! 😄

April you are a genius! Several things clicked with me during this video that have shifted how I’ve been approaching decluttering my space. I’ve had several piles that I just can’t seem to get through because I have some sort of attachment to the things or don’t know what to do with them because they don’t have a space and I can’t create a space for them. Why? Because 8 years ago I had to move back into my family home due to chronic illness. My small household of things had to go into one bedroom and many boxes. At first, it didn’t matter-I was too sick to care about much of anything. Eventually, I was well enough to go through, slowly but surely, the majority of the boxes and piles. But for the last 3 years I’ve been struggling off and on with the last remaining clutter. By nature, I am more of a power-through, declutter-as-you-go type. Having to confine myself to only 45-60 minutes can be very difficult because it feels like I get so little done. I can’t even complete my “small win” tasks. For some reason, this video made two important things shift in my brain. One: make the small wins even smaller. Instead of “clear this pile entirely,” I can change it to “sort this pile.” Then, I can tackle each sorted section individually. Seriously, it felt like a literal lightbulb went off in my brain. Two, it’s okay to sort the things I’m attached to and set them aside to declutter later. Doing it in one go has proved too difficult, and I didn’t want to admit “defeat.” But maybe those are just battles for another day. For now, I can put those things back into boxes and declutter them later. That would really, really decrease the feeling of overwhelm and intimidation. I already go through my keepsake box once a year with no trouble. This other items can have a similar role-in a box for now, and I can go through the box every now and then and declutter. A very long message, but I just can’t help but write it all out and thank you so much for this video. I’ve been trying to make myself declutter those piles I have instead of simply accepting where I am in life right now. And the piles make me so stressed! It may seem obvious now, but the idea of putting them in boxes to sort and prepare for decluttering never crossed my mind. Previously, boxing things up meant failure-boxing things was, to me, just putting the piles out of sight and out of mind. But it isn’t! It’s just letting myself breathe between tasks! I am so excited to start! I know I can finally, finally take care of those piles with this approach. I didn’t see it before because I’m not very much like Tracy generally. But those three piles in my room sure put me in her exact shoes! Watching what you both did in just one hour was so inspiring, since I do not have the capacity to do the all day marathons. Thank you! 😭❤️❤️
@glitzdancerАй бұрын
Good luck with it!! That’s how I’ve been doing it and for me it can even take years but like April says it’s about building the declutter muscles and with each pass through the same stuff it gets easier to say goodbye to things you never thought you would. And having smaller categories is so helpful and the sorting alone always makes me feel better even if I haven’t yet tossed anything because it’s still a sense of accomplishment that this one big overwhelming pile is now smaller more manageable groups. Hope it goes well for you!!
@marissabulso6439Ай бұрын
@@glitzdancer thank you!! I learned with my keepsake box that exact thing-each pass through gets easier. But I never considered applying it to my other piles. I think I was just so, so focused on making myself get rid of things that I turned the task into an unapproachable one. I’m glad to hear that you’ve been able to make progress going slow and small. That gives me hope!
@glitzdancerАй бұрын
@@marissabulso6439 sometimes the obvious ideas just miss us because we’re so used to seeing everyone do things a certain way! Idk what kind of stuff you still have but when I moved I would start sorting into broad piles like “office”. Then next time when I’d work on it I’d start breaking it down into smaller ones like “paper” and “writing stuff”. Then comes the micro organizing of “important documents” “trash” “mail” etc and “pencils” “pens” “markers” etc. that also helped me keep the overwhelm to a minimum and each time it was easier to go through because the piles were getting smaller. I’m not gonna test all the pens when they’re a big group that’s too much time but when I’m just looking at writing stuff then yeah I can test to make sure they all still work because that’s literally all I’m doing right now. Idk if that helps but with my adhd that’s the best way I’ve found to do it when I move with everything in random boxes and piles

I heard your voice say “ let’s calm the clutter”. So I took the time to sort it a bit and then I even put a blanket over when I wasn’t working on so I could truly focus in. a few hours later working through some of the stuff under the blanket, I had to calm the clutter again. Tracy is the most relatable for me. I have adhd and hoarding tendencies I inherited from my grandma and I’m very much a collector of things that just look pretty and my journey is years in the making. But my organization style is very similar to aprils and now decluttering is so much easier for me I’ve taken it a step at a time and we talk about it with family but clothes with holes or papers and things that years ago I still would have clung to I can now throw away without a second thought. It really is such a steady process and for us who like to collect just organizing it into categories helps just tidy it up and make it easier to come back to after awhile and go through it again. Love these videos so glad I found your channel through Dani’s journey and can’t wait for more!!

If I'm being totally honest, watching these videos for me is the BIGGEST teaching tool of how/why to live a minimalist lifestyle. My biggest current thorn r staying on top of papers. I tend to let them pile for a few months & then I spend an entire day clearing them until there completely gone. Luckily I contain them in "1" pile though. IT'S VERY OVERWHELMING! I can't even wrap my head around a WHOLE house...
@renfairegoddessАй бұрын
I have a tip to maybe reduce a bit of it? I try to process my mail daily. I open it, and toss all the trash right into the recycling bin. Then I shred sensitive information. Then I put anything that needs action in a bin on my desk. Whenever I am ready for action, I go to the bin and process the action items. Getting rid of the non action items on a regular basis makes it easier to see there's not a lot to take action on. I do the initial tossing in my kitchen, but a bin in the living room to store the pile might help you to grab a handful to process while you watch TV.
@juicie25btАй бұрын
@renfairegoddess TY so much for the tip at this point I need all the advice I can get 🙏
@ameliegifford1477Ай бұрын
Also put a recycling bin next to where you process mail and then you can open it and throw it out straight away without going anywhere else :)
@rocioiribe5841Ай бұрын
There's a tip i heard a few years ago that can pretty much apply to everything: don't handle things twice. Meaning put things back where they go instead of leaving them scattered (so you don't have to go deal with it later) or in your case, process mail right away (toss junk mail and put away what needs to be actioned) so that you don't have to deal with it later. The idea is to not give your future self work (or as little extra as possible) hope this makes sense!

When it comes to make up, toiletries and medical products, I find these expire much more quickly than people realize. When I was helping my grandmother and parents to go through their homes, we found a lot of expired items. Face creams expire and harden or smell "off". People tend to want to keep these if they were expensive, but even perfume only keeps that great, fresh smell for a few years. I now tend to wear less of a variety of perfumes but am always sure to buy them regularly.

I heard that she rents. Can she put hooks on? If she can, I think they would help a lot because she is a visual person. Also clear bins and BIG labels could help her. For jewelry and makeup, the clear bins seem like an excellent idea. It's very hard to find anything otherwise I've learned the hard way, unfortunately. If zip cases are being used, those huge make up bags with lots of clear dividers inside really help keep the categories together. It's good to have a small make up bag that you can take on the go with things that are used everyday.

And suddenly, I'm ready to let go of the whole collection because of all my various collections, this one is not the one.
@glitzdancerАй бұрын
@@TheJoyFinder yes exactly! I’ve let go of a few collections that even a year ago I thought I’d cling to forever. It’s so helpful to just start small a couple at a time because the more we do it the more we realize it’s not quite as important as we once thought it was. I spent a lot of time with my grandma growing up who also has hoarding tendencies living through the depression and I’m sure I inherited my hold onto it thoughts from her so having the space and time to go through it slowly makes all the difference. The quick loss would break me down especially since I lost a lot of stuff during moves due to improper storage but now it’s so easy to look at things more realistically and say goodbye.

Really good lesson in sometimes we need to focus on organizing and sorting before we can truly declutter. Hopefully this will help us go back to our sorted categories and purge from there. I just spent two weekends cleaning out my garage. We moved a year ago and got rid of a TON. Like, A TON before our move. But, after our move our garage became our doom room. It felt good to get in there and get it all organized. We got rid of a few more things, but now that everything is organized I feel empowered to get in there at my whim and see if I can declutter even more, one box/category at a time. It feels SO much more manageable. Before it's sorted and organized, it's just too overwhelming.

I love this gathering of like items, then declutter and decide ! I gathered all my cleaners , and large jugs of vinegar! I had 11 jugs of vinegar 🙄🤣 ! But I do use it often! Realized I needed more laundry detergent and have a lot of everything else!

Love your videos! Can tell you’re from the south. It’s a southern thing to use “whenever” for “when.”

I wondered about why she said that and another person that I watch says that also so I looked it up. She’s from Texas and it specifically said Texas when I looked it up and the other person is from Illinois, and when I looked it up, it specifically said Illinois. Another person I watch says inside all the time instead of in. I don’t think she’s ever use the word in and frankly it drives me crazy.

That's universal for English speakers.

@@karenhaire5451 Typically “When" is used to refer to a SPECIFIC time or event, while "whenever" is used to refer to ANY time or event. However, different dialects (commonly in Southern US states) use “when” as a question and “whenever” for time
