LeToya Luckett may be the only person to ever get kicked out of an extremely successful group & go on to have a #1 album, sell a million records, have a hit song, another top 20 album, and have great success as an actress. She isn’t just talented; she’s the definition of a survivor.

I'll say this: It's easy to become an icon if everybody is clearing your path and supporting you the whole way. To establish your own path in the aftermath of a very public breakup shows what Letoya is truly made of. I keep hearing her say she struggles with confidence. Her whole career screams confidence. To step out of the shadow of DC and Beyonce and stand unapologetically in your own multi-faceted talent and truth is truly remarkable. I am a fan. I am also a Houstonian. If you're from Houston, you know how to call a thing a thing. Yes, Beyonce is talented. LeToya is beyond talented. She is an inspiration to anyone who has faced rejection and kept going anyway. She didn't let someone else's success dim her light. I'm glad Empressive did this story. It blessed my Spirit.

No one cleared any hurdles or paths for Beyonce to walk through. Clearly you didn't listen to your favorite, Ms. Luckett. She said they, as a group, were rejected many, many times but it was hard work and persistence that finally paid off. She said, as we all know by now, that B's work ethic and dedication to her craft is beyond this world. Now, I'm also a fan of Ms. Luckett, but let's pretend Beyonce was just handed the platinum spoon by someone. I can relate to her story so much. I remember when I was a little girl and all I ever wanted to be was a singer. Then, a grown adult told my 8-year-old self that I couldn’t sing and it broke my heart. 20 years and I still can’t fully bring myself to sing in front of others. I’m trying my hardest to. My sound is different. I have a classical sound. Most people think it’s funny whenever I tell them that. Another reason why I don’t sing in front of people. One thing I know, my vibrato in first soprano is a beautiful thing to hear.

What do you mean by classical sound? Like operatic or classic Soul? Either way that adult was wrong and mean spirited to do that. I'm Sorry it affected you because that's what they intended it to do: affect something or someone to take out their own issues on. Work on rebuilding you. I had a bad performance as a teen which was a bit of a disaster. I can relate on a smaller scale. I was a singer. I went to performing arts schools all my life, auditioned and got in every time. When people are constantly telling you to “sing like this”, “sing this, not that”, “you should be singing this kind of music”. And you’re getting it from every angle, the adults in your life, teachers, the other kids. It dampens your passion. My passion was GONE by the time I was 18. Now i only sing for my close friends and family.

Oh God, as someone who was a choral singer from 2nd grade all the way till college, I GET IT. I can sing, but I can't SANG. And that's ok, we're not all meant to. The amount of times you get singled out and corrected tho😑... and it doesn't come from a bad place, but that doesn't mean it isn't sometimes embarrassing or hurtful. Even more so when you're really trying and still not quite getting it. We were high school students competing with college students cuz my teacher pushed us THAT hard. But Jfc were we GOOD lol One day I realized it was about more than just my vocal ability. I can read music... that's an accomplishment! I know how to count my notes, I know how to site read, I know how to count sing, I can listen to a song a few times and not only pick out my part (2nd soprano/ 1st alto. I used to be a 1st soprano), I learn the words very quickly. Oh, you wanna 'Do Re Mi' and see if I can randomly hit that top Do then the Fa? I gotchu, Ill even do the hand signs with you. Sis. I can honestly relate to her. Imposter syndrome is very real. Especially when you go from an environment where you’re shining on your own to one where you’re sharing the spotlight with other equally talented individuals. This is why they say comparison is the thief of joy. But it’s also very natural. Especially when you’re trying to enter an industry that is competitive or you’re constantly being told what you’re doing wrong and not receiving the same amount of attention to what you’re doing right. I was in performing arts my entire childhood and experienced this too. It’s very heart breaking to go from feeling secure in yourself and your abilities to struggling to even believe ppl when they say you’re talented.

Struggling with this now. I just started a new job in a medical lab and the lab I had before that I was thriving. Now I feel like I’m the weak link because I’m not as knowledgeable as the veterans there because they have 20+ years of knowledge and experience than me. I was told they would teach me but my supervisor and everyone in lead is expecting me to learn these concepts in 6weeks and I have to jump through hoops just to be there which I think is unfair. They’re on my ass and I will admit the pressure is becoming a lot but the pay is so much better than I’ve ever had and I need this job.

Absolutely! I grew up in performing arts, got awarded, but never felt like I was "good enough" because my parents didn't champion my confidence. Never stood up for me in school environments, and found my confidence "cocky" because they were shy themselves. Their apathy actively dimmed my light. Parental support, compassion, and comfort is the medicine to all of these natural feelings. Beyonce had all of these x10. Her family, their connections, and being upper middle class contributed a LOT to supporting her prodigal talents.

She said “that’s on you, not on me” it totally changed my perspective on confidence, intimidation, comparisons and so on! You literally decide whether others greatness put you down or not! You literally decide whether you are intimidated by someone or not! No matter how aggressive and unwelcoming the situation was! You are the the denominator in the equation! That’s something I try to internalize myself hopefully one day Myself and others who experience insecurities and intimidation could overcome whatever it may be with the least collateral damage possible!

It did humble her which was great for her craft development, but I think what she was saying (and a lot of the other members have spoken about) is that she felt like she was being told and treated like she wasn’t as talented or had no talent. They used Beyoncé as the standard of what a good singer was and anyone who didn’t sound like her or could do the things that she could with her voice weren’t as talented. When any singer will tell you ppls voices are built different and not everyone starts on the same starting point, some ppl are just more naturally gifted singers or learn faster or have put in more hours of training, that’s why it’s not fair to compare. Because by breaking someone’s self esteem you guarantee that they’ll never reach their fullest potential, because they’ll stop trying all together. And that’s where the anxiety and depression comes in. No one wants to be mediocre, but a voice like Whitney or Aretha or whomever isn’t just an overnight thing. It takes years!!! Of dedication and consistency. Singing is the epitome of trusting the process.

I respect her testimony and ppl better not twist it and come for her over Beyonce. I went thru the same when me and a couple of my friends tried to start a group in highschool. I felt like being the darker one and thicker one - me and my voice didn't match up to my friend Diamond and I lost confidence so I took another route-rapping and it made me a double threat which helped a lot later. Now why I quit music- that's a different story lol

@Faith Dobson: Letoya is cool. But she’ll never “sing Beyoncé under a bus”. She can sing, but she never really had the hunger to get it that Beyoncé had. She’s a borderline perfectionist at her craft. I’m not sure if Letoya had that same drive.

I believe it. I remember it took me a while to trust Beyonce and Kelly after the departure of Latoya and Latavia. Because they were going around telling anyone who interviewed them that neither of them sang. They only lip synced and all vocals were Beyonce's and Kelly's including backup and harmonies. They had people thinking they didn't make any vocal contributions on the albums.

I seen several interviews where Beyoncé said something to the effect of “Now we ALL can sing lead” after LeToya left the group. That shows the attitude of her which she probably inherited from her father who made her feel like she was better than the other members because he managed the group. Had all the girls been treated equally from the very beginning, the outcome of all of their careers would’ve been different. I can only imagine how stressful it must’ve been being in that group. Everything was designed for her to succeed and only her. Everyone else had to kiss her and her family’s ass. Unbelievable. And we’ll never truly know what went on in the group because a lot of them are afraid of the backlash they’ll receive.

Did you watch all of that interview... You're taking what Beyonce said out of context.... Let me educate you on what was actually said. Beyonce said that earlier in the group because she had the stronger voice her father and the label wanted her to sing lead. She also talks about how miserable she was because when everybody else was chilling out and going to the movies she had to be in the studio singing and practicing because she was the lead singer. She then went on to say that when the group had years in the business and had gained a lot of commercial success everyone was finally able to sing lead because basically they had made it. What she said had nothing to do with LeToya specifically.

Honestly as a singer, I completely understand loosing your confidence thing. Prior to meeting my voice coach at 18 I thought I was a good singer. Then when he opened his mouth and I heard the power and agility in his voice, I got nervous and sort of faded in the background when he sang. It took years of encouragement to realize I’m just as good. If you’re not confident in your craft, sometimes you can start to second guess your worth. Glad she over came it.
