Maybe the most iconic pop song ever written and recorded.....

Sometimes people build something up to expectations that are unrealistic. So even if a song is really good, it's not what it was built up in our minds to be. I was a teenager when Baker Street came out. I still think it sounds awesome. Blessings to you Empress. 🌹

Its one of my favourite songs of all time, and there is no chorus! The chorus is Raphael Ravenscroft on sax and Hugh Burns on guitar Gerry was a person who was troubled by fame and sadly he passed away in 2011, from the effects of many years of alcohol abuse. He was a wonderful song writer and the best thing Paisley (Scotland) ever produced. Sadly Raph Ravenscroft has also passed away This is their legacy, one of the best songs of the 20th century I am so pleased you reacted to Baker Street

Love her reaction, love her accent, love her smile! I love how that smile became brighter when the saxophone came in. While I will agree that Baker Street is smooth in terms of the vocals. I often describe the song as just plain "Epic". The build up to the end and finally hitting you with that guitar solo. Again, Epic! Back in 78, I had first heard the song at the local amusement park. I remember it clearly. I was waiting on line for the bumper cars and I was looking at the park's "Troika" ride and debating if I should go on it or not. Then this song comes over the PA and I was like..."Whoa!" At first, I thought it was just going to be another slow rock song, but the saxophone grabbed me, but when that guitar solo kicked in, I was hooked, the song became an instant favorite of which I still love today. ...It's just plain Epic!

You worry about not enjoying this song as much as other people do. And then that smile spreads across your face. - Pieces of art such as this are precious. For all that we might disagree about things, there are a few things to which we can point and say 'This brings me happiness, and it brings you happiness. And this is good..'.

I cannot see how anyone could dislike "Baker Street". The saxophone really adds to it in a big way. Another tune I just know you will love (also ending in superb Sax) is "Will You" by Hazel O'Connor.

"Baker Street" was released February 1978. I was 12 1/2...in 7th grade...& this song is what brings back every memory of what every person was doing in 1978! This song was one of my mom's favorites & she had a friend record it onto an 8 track tape so she could play it over & over! Almost 45 years later & this song still resonates with me, reminds me of my childhood in 1978, but most of all, reminds me of my mom & how happy this song made her every time it came on the radio. Seeing you react the same way we all do to this song is the icing on the cake♥

In ‘78 I was 27 yrs old. Living my best life and struggling as well. Good times to look forward to better days. I thought we were sophisticated to never ban books, never punish corporations like Disney for diversity in hiring, outlawing schools teaching history, promoting abandonment of a democracy who have been invaded and brutally attacked with daily war crimes and genocide.

Great reaction Empress. I really love this song. This is the most sentimental of all Gerry Rafferty's songs. It is about a man who dreams of owning a house and living away from his neighborhood, but he is a drunk, and cannot achieve that goal. He drinks to forget what he doesn't have, and never realizes he's a rolling stone with no direction. Baker Street is a real street in London; Rafferty often stayed with a friend who lived there.

Rafferty was also in Steelers Wheel earlier in the decade, best known for the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack track Stuck in the Middle With You that some people still think is a Bob Dylan song.

One of the greatest songs ever to COVER. That simple-yet-iconic main sax line just keeps sounding awesome with pretty much any instrument it's presented on--- but especially a big loud electric guitar. (OK, of course I'm thinking mainly of the Foo Fighters, but they're not the only ones who nailed it...)

I low-key Love this song. it was a mainstay from my mam, uncle (from whom i got my profound Love of all things musical). It was never "up there" with the Eagles, Bowie, Beatles, Stones & such. but it WAS one of those slightly more popularly obscure, but Absolutely Class songs, kind of "if you know, you Know". Even so. You are allowed to not like it. Or like it less. Taste is subjective. Never allow anyone to tell you what is good or not. My own extensive list of enjoyed music ranges from Absolute Legend to Please Don't Judge Me to WTF is THAT?! 🤣May yours be the same😁🤘🍻

Interesting perspective. I had no expectations of this song the first time I heard it since my first time hearing it was on the radio when it came out (yeah, I'm old 😂🥲). All I knew at first was the great sax hook. I had to listen to it a number of times to try to get feel for the lyrics and what it was about. It's one of those lyrics that is not real specific and you are left to draw your own conclusions on its meaning, but it affects you somehow anyway. Kind of like Glen Campbell's Wichita Lineman. Great song.
